"CONAN:THE BARBARIAN" (1981-Basil Poledouris), with Arnold Schwarzenegger and resounding singers with brilliant orchestration --- then we have a selections from "THE MISSION" (1986-Enno Morricone), beautiful choir blends emotion, enhanced by haunting themes and counter melodies --- "THE LION IN WINTER" (1988-John Barry), a favorite among Barry fans, this arrangement and rendition has it all...next we travel with helmet in hand(with horns included) with ..another remake leaps to the screen with "HENRY V" (1989-Patrick Doyle), one can only marvel at Kenneth Branagh's Shakespeare film, but the music from a solo to full choir gives you goose bumps --- the CD is excellent, recorded in Dolby Surround sound is completely mesmerizing and outstanding orchestration, every instrument, every voice, crystal clear --- for all the "film-score-buffs", do not pass this one up --- needs to be in your every growing collection (nuff said) --- featuring the CROUCH END FESTIVAL CHORUS and their leader David Temple (Choir Master), world renown with a strong reputation for hitting the mark everytime --- for additional listening pleasure THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC, conducted by Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick and as always Nic Raine these gentleman are the icing on the cake --- for additional listening pleasure we have the classical favorite "CARMINA BURANA" (1981-Carl Orff), the dark tale of Camelot --- now that's just for openers.

This recording sounds less like the Boston Pops and more like 101 Strings. (That's not a compliment.) In fact, I know there are better performances of each one out there. These are actually all pleasant, familiar pieces which I like. I'm not at all sure they should all be on the same album. If you want background music while you're reading, or making love, this is perfect. If you're driving late at night and trying to stay awake, not so good! In short, the sum is less than the total of its parts. But I'm giving it a 3, because I do like most of the individual pieces, and I never give more than 4.

Reggae for Kids: Movie Classics takes the magic of Disney and ramps it up tenfold with 13 Disney movie themes and tunes from the studio's well-loved films--all set to five-star reggae interpretations. Some of these songs sound as if they were meant be recorded in the syncopated and lilting reggae form, especially Bunny Wailer's playful reprise of "Hakuna Matata," Don Carlos's splendidly rich "Zippity Do Dah," and J.C. Lodge's "Colors of the Wind." The latter tune is so inspired by Lodge's honey-coated vocal that the song's poignant lyrics translate well through the worlds of difference between European explorers and the Native Americans' honor of nature and spirit. Lodge's rendition ultimately communicates much of the myth embroidered in Jamaican music and religious beliefs. Like so many of Disney's deep and lyrical songs that create a place of timelessness where childhood never ends, these transported classics are effortlessly reborn--and rejuvenated--for any listener. I heard this cd played on a local public radio station in Cincinnati back in late March and was moved to call the radio station to find out what the cd was and where I could find it....Amazon.com had the cd and I was thrilled that I wouldn't have to drive back to Ohio to make the purchase. The cd is wonderful for children and adults who grew up with Disney movies and songs.

        This was one of my favorite record albums when I was young. It was a pleasure to introduce to my grandchildren. MOST important is the narrative that starts each track. Many of the other versions do NOT include this. They were my most favorite memories, and the children still resond to them today.

        The other reviewer is off base. If you don't want narration get a recording without it. With narration or not, Saint-Saens chose his animals and gave his musical interpretation of their appearance. Children can enjoy the verses although Hugh Downs does not have as much fun with them as some narrators. This is a great CD if you want to develop a child's interest in classical music.

        This "unwashed" recording has the exhilarating tonality of a live performance which many modern digitals lack. Saint-Saen's "Carnival of the Animals" was my 4-year-old's favourite, followed by Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King" and Gounod's "Funeral March of a Marionette".

        Odgen Nash's verses, written to accompany Saint-Saen's work are too clever for young children, who will miss out on the word-play and puns. Also, they tend to interpret the experience too much, which interferes with their imaginations. If a child prefers to make-belief in dragons, for example, as opposed to lions, then there is all of Hugh Down's recitations to sit through and ignore first, since the tracks do not separate the narrative from the music.

        Nonetheless, this is one of the better classical recordings I've heard geared specifically for children.

        5 out of 5 stars The Best Mozart Piano Concerto 21 Andante Is Here!.......2001-08-03

        For those of you familiar with the Mozart concerto, and the movie "Elvira Madigan", which has been used to name the concerto, would know how beautiful, elegant and romantic the music is. The other tracks of the cd are from great films and the music is well-performed by master artists. Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto 2 First Movement is here, and the Fanfare from 2001, Wagner's Ride of the Valkyrie's, Ravels Bolero and Strauss' Blue Danube. But if you are in search of the finest interpretation of the Andante movement in the Mozart 21st piano concerto, look no further. Svetlana Stanceva delivers the greatest rendition- poised, stately, elegant, escalating the work into romanticism. Other versions and if you have heard this concerto often enough, are either too slow (Walter Klein on the piano for example) or too fast, but Stanceva's is definately measured and perfect. Take this cd home with you and enjoy a night of beautiful music.

        I meant to get the version narrated by Sir John Gielgud not Sir Alec Guiness, but this version of Peter and the Wolf is ok. I'm not sure why the wolf must be "saved" and taken to the zoo however; I much prefer the original story, as Gielgud tells it (if I'm not mistaken). Gielgud seems to have better timing when telling the story than Guiness and the orchestra sounds zippier, for lack of a better classical term. Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time tracking down the Gielgud version on Amazon.

        I have been searching for this for YEARS! My Mom got this for me when I was a child(on 8-track!)under a different title and with a different cover. I am a musician and this collection was definitely a big influence on me...I don't think my Mom knew what good she was doing when she got this for me! And I never realized until now that it was Sir Alec Guiness on this album! I am a big Star Wars fan, and this collection really brings things full circle for me! I'm buying this right now! This is a great way to introduce children to music other than Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears. THANK YOU, Amazon, for having this treasured memory in stock!

        It is tragic that the recording of "Peter and the Wolf" with Fiedler, narrated by Richard Hale, the BEST narrator ever, is not available on CD. It was issued on vinyl in 1957.

        Since the Peter Ustinov reading of this fine kids' tale has unhappily vanished from the catalogue, this Guiness reading (which is not mentioned in the Amazon.com listing!) is far and away the best available The Fiedler performance is acceptable if not distinguished.
