Volume 6 of Hyperion's complete Schubert song edition contains several settings of poems by Rochlitz, a second-rate writer and music critic. Rochlitz became famous not only because of these Schubert songs, but also for his harsh words about Beethoven's Wellington's Victory, which prompted the composer to compare Rochlitz's highest thoughts to his own bodily waste products. An interesting little backwater in musical history, that, and a lovely program of Schubert songs, this. Try it, you'll like it. --David Hurwitz

Songs here are so charming that almost at the first hearing you are completely lured. They reflect the many facets of schubert's feeling about night, from safety homey, grandeur and splendid, to mystery and obscure, cold or warmth. Johnson's tone is just like the night---both laggish, seductive and mysterious. His interpretation "Die Sterne","Alinde","Des Fischers Liebesglueck", "Vor meiner Wiege" are very compelling and moving. An Excellent CD.One of my desert island choice.
