Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Original and delightful - what words better describe the charming and approachable piano music of Elizabeth Lauer, noted composer, educator, lecturer, adjudicator, and, of course, pianist? If you like the feel of ragtime and want to hear it brought into the Twentieth Century (Joplin meets Copland?), here's the disc for you! Elizabeth has had her works performed by Ursula Oppens, Roger Kellaway, and Margaret Mills (who makes a cameo appearance here) among many, many others. She has toured the world as half of a piano duo with King Bosworth; she has produced records for Columbia Masterworks under the guidance of the late Goddard Lieberson; and here, in her first all-original CD recording, she performs some of her favorite upbeat compositions on the beautifully restored 1895 7' Steinway grand at Manhattan's renowned Music Designs LTD studio. Listeners from any number of musical backgrounds will find this effervescent and sophisticated music fascinating, captivating, ! and very uplifting.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars "Women of Note Quarterly" review of "Five Flower Rags".......2000-01-02

Barbara Harbach's review in "Women of Note Quarterly" reads (in part): Elizabeth Lauer is the performer as well as the composer on the pieces of her CD entitled "Five Flower Rags," which is also the title of the first pieces. "Fleur de Lou" has an arresting swing between duple and triple time coupled with Lauer's wonderful sense of spinning out a phrase. Her sense of rubato gives added flair to the piece. "Hibiscus Rex" uses a clever design of mixed meter underlying the engaging waltz tune. "Magnolia" contains more melodic decoration, and rich, harmonic language. Full of nuance and long-breathed phrases, "Columbina Linda" conveys a sense of languor and musical richness. "Six Haiku" atmospherically reflect the short poetic lines. Improvisatory in nature, the listener reflects on the words while listening; it is a fully integrated, programmatic piece of piano music. Some of Lauer's most engaging writing occurs in "It Takes Two" with its subtle rhythms and harmonies. Performed by Lauer and Linda Maranis, this duo has technical ahd musical control, and impeccable ensemble. After hearing a CD devoted to the piano works of Elizabeth Lauer, the listener feels that she knows Lauer a little bit. Her music should reach an even wider audience who will appreciate her witty and piquant style of engaging melodies, sparse harmonic language and idiomatic writing for the piano.
