It is not known exactly when Haydn composed three of these trios (27-29), but they doubtless belong to the greatest keyboard challenges among his piano trios. In 1796 Haydn composed his last trio, Hob. XV:30, which was also his last piano composition. It is considerably more concentrated in its motivic work than all its predecessors and the cantabile quality of the material is remarkable. On historical instruments, the Trio 1790 again presents the four compositions affectionately and with attention to the smallest detail.

Brisk refreshing renditions of well-worn repertoire.......2005-07-01

These works by Haydn are among the composers finest, in my opinion, although they seem to get much less attention his other major efforts in the area of chamber music, notably the string quartets. The most widely recommended recordings of these works are by the Beaux Arts Trio, who perform them using a modern piano string instruments. These performances recorded by CPO employ a forte piano and period string instuments. The more transparent texture produced by the old instruments gives these performances a more percussive, transparent texture which serves the music well, in my opinion. I recommend these recordings highly.

Not even the most devoted Haydn lover is likely to get excited over this disc. It's too calm and civilized. These early Haydn trios don't have the drama or humor of his later works; they're just placid entertainments for the dinner hour. If there's time in your life for such music, though, this could prove a satisfying disc. Trio 1790 plays period instruments with a fine sense of style, and doesn't try to goose the music along. They're content to let it go its way, with sensitive but never overstressed performances that make extremely good sense. For some bizarre reason, cpo is offering this well-produced disc at a greatly reduced price, making it even more attractive. --Leslie Gerber

Fine Recording, But Get The Beaux Arts.......2003-07-15

The five volumes (thus far) of Haydn's Complete Piano Trios by Trio 1790 are perfectly fine recordings of these great works. However, for less than the combined price of these five volumes, you can purchase the Beaux Arts Trio's 9-CD set of these works in a lovely, space saving, slim paper box. Those performances that have been without peer since their initial release in the 1970s. CPO usually concentrates its efforts on issuing digital recordings of lesser-known works outside of the standard repertoire, and they do a commendable job of it. In many cases, this provides CPO with a unique product and something that's an easy sale -- which is clearly not the case here.
