Remarkably, Majesty and Wonder is Phil Keaggy's first Christmas-themed album in a career that spans 30-odd years. This instrumental collection fully embodies the mystical marvel and joyful solemnity of Christmas and the light it casts on the dark season in which it falls. Original pieces inspired by early-20th-century English classical composer Ralph Vaughn-Williams blend seamlessly with sacred traditionals such as Bach's much loved "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." A masterful finger picker, Keaggy plucks lines on guitar, mandolin, and bass that are fluid and graceful. Their texture is accentuated and emboldened by the stately sounds of the London Festival Orchestra, who contribute horns, woodwinds, and strings. Harp adds a heavenly touch, hand bells ring out with simple clarity and Irish flute soars on the upper end. Vocal enhancement is wisely and stunningly limited to elegant harmonies courtesy of Michelle Tumes. Majesty and Wonder speaks to the innocence of awe and unquestioning belief in miracles. --Paige La Grone

Failing students have had such an influential role in shaping rock & roll that it's easy to give the bookworm segment short shrift. Witness the vital contributions from the likes of Ray Davies, the Zombies, and Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Magnum--the kind of smartypants songwriters with whom the Decemberists' Colin Meloy is often compared. The second full-length CD from Portland, Oregon's Decemberists certainly posits Meloy near the top of the current crop of literate indie rockers. Meloy is the brother of author Maile Meloy and a fellow whom one concludes has his own well-worn library card. Eschewing conventional pop-song subject matter, he delves deep into the past for his narratives and even his lexicon, witness "Shanty for the Arethusa," the high-seas opener, and "The Chimbley Sweep," which recalls the Zombies' similarly dark-hued "Butcher's Tale." Though the subject matter is frequently dire and the approach is lyrically erudite, one shouldn't conclude that listening to Her Majesty is the aural equivalent of wading through some dusty tome. Bright pop melodies, smart arrangements, and Meloy's commanding vocals adorn songs that are as inviting as they are astute and evocative. --Steven Stolder

4 out of 5 stars Exotic Shanty Tunes and a Little Thing Called "TRUST".......2006-08-02

I'll confess to having been a little trepidatious in giving HER MAJESTY a spin. After having heard the glorious success of CASTAWAYS AND CUTOUTS, this second Decemberists' disc seemed ripe for a sophomore jinx. And after listening to the lead track, the almost willfully obtuse "Shanty for the Arethusa," I was not encouraged.

Thankfully, "Shanty" did not prove to be a representative sample of HER MAJESTY's quality. The Portland (yay!) band's charm and talent came through convincingly on the majority of this album's material, though it's also true that this is a project that did not immediately seduce me as the band's earlier work did. But working a little to appreciate less accessible material is hardly daunting when the band is this talented. The listener knows that there is going to be a payoff; I guess that's a magical little bond called "trust" which the Decemberists' have now earned from me.

For pop music fans who read Dickens, or enjoy exotic shanty tunes with prominent accordion and organ parts... or for those of you who can enjoy a wry and lovely ode to a lover's ankle, HER MAJESTY is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Your day will come, indeed.......2006-06-07

Ah, to soar with the whirlwind love affair that is a Decemberists album... it's certainly something else. Indie to the last accordion, Colin Meloy and his motley band of maudlin musicians set out to top their phenomenal CASTAWAYS AND CUTOUTS - without success, I'm afraid, but that doesn't mean that this isn't worth a listen every bit as much as its predecessor is, because it is! This album marks the milestone of that nail-biter that is the sophomore record - will it slump? Impale itself on the swords of music critics everywhere, wither away and die in the back of the CD racks at Sam Goody? Or will it shine? Actually, HER MAJESTY is my beacon at sea.

Mellow acoustics, accordions, keyboards, and even the occasional trumpet are embroidered into the eleven songs you see here, with the sturdy spine of drums that keep the musical body standing straight up. Nothing new here, really. Meloy still dazzles in storytelling and words that sixty percent of America's population will never use in their lifetime, but that's the roguish charm of it all. And he's getting better at his craft, evolving with his bandmates at a comfortable and exciting pace: the rat-a-tat drumbeat of "Song For Myla Goldberg," the head-bobbing, insanely catchy "Billy Liar," the almost country-ish, drawling "As I Rise."

There's just something about HER MAJESTY that doesn't quite measure up to the last one - I couldn't tell you what, because everything the Decemberists have put out generally sounds the same (that's not to say they don't try something different every now and then, however); the lyrics and music retain the same friendly companionship that makes this band an easy and absorbing listen, the same instruments are used... but I would consider this as your second outing if you have just delved into the world of the Decemberists. CASTAWAYS AND CUTOUTS remains untouched and perhaps unable to be topped as well - and heck, let's keep it that way. Don't judge, just listen. Your ears will thank you for it.

5 out of 5 stars To all the people who bash this record..........2006-06-02

Aren't we all but the sums of our influences? Not listening to these guys because Neutral Milk Hotel "already did it" is stupid. You might as well not listen to Willie Nelson because Johnny Cash "already did it."

Make it a draw and buy this album AND Neutral Milk Hotel. Listen to them both and be amazed.

5 out of 5 stars differences.......2006-02-24

well, to the two reviewers below me:
a) it is pretty obvious red right ankle is a reference to nick cave, don't you consider? so that it is similar should come as no surprise given the fact that they admit it themselves.
b) the decemberists, yes, they are very similar to Neutral Milk Hotel, but i don't see myself showing off a banner that states the Decemberists created a new genre and NMH didn't..., nobody has said so, so if you are angry because the sounds are alike, it's your problem, not an excuse to dismiss the band. there are very basic differences between both, by the way.
i'm sick of the i'm-indier-than-thou, u indier-than-thou person. i'm just pretty tired of some reviewers and of other reviewers who come to complain about those.

1 out of 5 stars Neutral Milk Hotel Ripoff.......2006-02-08

I get the feeling that most of the reviews on here for this album are written by folks who feel special because they think they discovered some new amazing genre and sound that no one else knows about. Hate to break it to you kids, but this sounds has been around since the mid 90s. It was called Neutral Milk Hotel and it was vastly superior to these con-artists called the Decemberists.

Before you disagree with me, go pick up Neutral Milk hotel's In the Aeroplane over the Sea (1997), and then try to disagree.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for any HIM fan.......2007-06-08

I absolutely fell in love with HIM last fall when my friend "introduced" the music to me. It took a few weeks, but by now they are my favorite band by far. I can't get enough of the songs on this compilation. The newest cover, "Solitary Man" adds everything that Neil Diamond didn't do when it was originally written; I even let me parents listen to the cover and they think that its great.

I have recommended this compilation to all of my friends, and several of them have either started listening to HIM little by little thereafter or have simply fallen in love with the band. I could not have been happier with this compilation and am looking forward to the rest of HIM's career as well as the July release of Venus Doom.

3 out of 5 stars When Love and Cheese Embrace.......2007-05-16

This three year-old European compilation was just released in the States, and it provides a handy overview of HIM's homegrown Scandinavian love metal, which can be of interest to rock fans on the prowl for new sounds but who don't feel like diving into the proper albums. However, this collection of singles washes out the already miniscule creativity and excitement of the proper HIM albums. Ville Valo's goth romance is surely unique, but the band's musical backdrop rarely rises above slick and professional 80s arena metal. Nobody in the band except Valo makes an impression on the listener, and the performances are so polished and overproduced that no real advancement or growth can be detected in this collection, even though the tracks were recorded over a period of seven years and four studio albums. Bland riffs and uninspired rhythms are often unsuccessfully spruced up with annoying piano or keyboard squiggles, as in "Join Me in Death," "Heartache Every Moment," and "When Love and Death Embrace," and weak guitar solos almost always mimic the vocal melodies from the verses. Even worse, the band's awful ballads such as "Gone with the Sin" and "Close to the Flame" would induce the gag reflexes of even the most jaded hair metal swooners. This is all a shame because the band really can rock out when they feel like it, as in "Buried Alive by Love," "Right Here in My Arms," and their best-ever track "Your Sweet Six Six Six," indicating that the proper HIM albums should be explored for true love metal treasures. Granted, HIM are of interest due to the distinct outlook and intriguing personality of Ville Valo, but this collection does little to enhance the band's unimpressive chops. [~doomsdayer520~]

I just enjoy in it very much. The best of the choir music in very good performance.

5 out of 5 stars Best of American Choral Singing!.......2003-02-08

This CD could be the cornerstone of your choral music library! Wonderful performances of all of the essential choral pieces give a wonderful introduction to choral music for someone new to it, and also give a nice sampler of the best pieces for someone already familiar with the music. Listening to each excerpt may inspire you to purchase the entire work!

As you would expect of performances by Robert Shaw's groups, these performances are really extraordinary and show the best of American choral singing.

3 out of 5 stars A good album, but--.......2001-12-28

The three stars I have given this album are not for the performances, which are all tremendous and deserve five stars or more, but for the idea of releasing this sort of compilation. Every single one of these selections is part of a larger Shaw-recorded work already released by Telarc, and you are far better off seeking the complete recordings that all these pieces are from, than just buying a mere "sampler". (Shaw, however, never did get around to recording the complete " L' Enfance du Christ".) Of course, that can be very expensive for some people, and if one cannot afford all those recordings, I suppose this is the next best thing. One can't shake off the feeling, however, that because Shaw is no longer with us, Telarc is desperately trying to give the impression that "new" Shaw recordings are constantly being released by them, when the truth is that nearly all the new ones are mere recyclings. (The last complete Robert Shaw album released by Telarc was Dvorak's "Stabat Mater", a CD well worth buying.)

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2000-04-04

This album is so up-lifting. As the music soars, so do your spirits.

    Product Description

The third album of a band is always a special case. It is not called the make it or break it album for nothing and in the case of Black Majesty, the former rings true. The Australians are among the most popular representatives of genuine, real, melodic Power Metal worldwide. Tomorrowland brims with energetic guitar duels, increased tempo, a lot of thrust and those melody lines characteristic of Black Majesty. This positive Metal power is taken to an enormously high level by the concise vocal lines of exceptional singer John Cavaliere. The unprepared listener is swept along by the amazingly unerring new hymns like the driving Into The Black, solid Faces Of War, or the dramatic, spirited Evil In Your Eyes.

The limited edition comes housed in lavish digipak format and contains two bonus tracks.

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

    5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

    5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

    Amazon.com essential recording

History's first great opera--the story of Orpheus descending to Hades to retrieve his bride Eurydice from the dead, only to lose her again--gets a fine performance (the best overall version currently available) from John Eliot Gardiner and his musicians. Anthony Rolfe Johnson performs the title role with all the beautiful sound you'd expect from an Orfeo; he negotiates virtuoso passages flawlessly and sings passionately without overwhelming Monteverdi's music with too much voice. Julianne Baird as Eurydice and Anne Sofie Von Otter in a gripping appearance as the Messenger are the standouts in a cast without a weak link. Everyone involved, including the chorus and orchestra, performs with such energy, beauty, and precision that even long stretches of recitative never pall. --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars Great recording of a beautiful opera.......2007-03-29

Gardiner's recording of L'Orfeo is exquisite. The samples of different tracks as well as other listeners' reviews were very influential in my decision to purchase these CDs rather than a different recording of the opera. I am very happy with my new CDs and would highly recommend this product.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-05-13

This opera in performance is begun by the character "La Musica", or music personified ,who delivers a long treatise which in essence proclaims how music can do many things to us emotionally. As this "fable of music" (Monteverdi called it) unfolds we are exposed to the whole gamut of human emotions, from the most euphoric to the most dejected, presented in musical language that is perhaps closer to impassioned speech than recitative has ever been, before or since. The fact that Monteverdi's L'Orfeo has been referred to as the "first true opera in the history of music" has much to do with the fact that Monteverdi had the dramatic ability to synthesize the text, the stage and the music. And it was a favourable time historically and musically to do so. Moreover, he gave very specific directions as to how it would be put together. And what better musician to record it than John Eliot Gardiner. He has gathered together a wonderful group of soloists in every role; although some parts are small each contribution is perfection which makes for a superb offering to the listener!!!!!In addition, I think the Choral singing was so superior to some other recordings past and present. If you are an early music fan these discs will be truly "music to your ears".

5 out of 5 stars Gardiner and crew are amazing!.......2005-09-17

I am not a big fan of Gardiner when it comes to some music, for instance Bach. I just think others do it better. However, Gardiner is a fine conductor of Monteverdi and this recording shows it. If you are not familiar with Baroque opera and want to find out how a first rate crew of performers sound with a major work of early opera, this is a great recording with which to start!

5 out of 5 stars One of the most beautiful operas of all time.......2005-09-10

This recording of Monteverdi's L'Orfeo is truly a spectacular work. I didn't really care for Baroque opera before I heard this. But now Monteverdi is my favorite operatic composer. Not only is the music beautiful but the singers are absolutely stunning. Anthony Rolfe Johnson is absolutely perfect for the title role. His soft yet clear tenor voice shows the passion and the emotion that Orfeo has for Eurydice. Lynne Dawson who sings La Musica has a good voice for introducing the opera. Anne Sofie von Otter who plays Messaggiera, has such a sorrowful and sad voice for her role which makes it all the more better. But the absolute best singer on this recording is John Tomlinson who sings Caronte or the Charon. John Tomlinson is also the voice of the Commendatore in the movie Amadeus. But his deep bass makes you wonder if its at all possible to get past him. But that's not the best part of the opera. The best part about the whole recording is the choir. All the choruses are to die for, especially the chorus "Lasicate i monti." It almost makes one want to dance. But I definitely reccommend this recording to all Baroque opera lovers, even for those who don't like opera.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite recording of any Opera.......2003-08-21

Gardiner, again shows his skill with baroque vocal works. This, regarded as the first great Opera, is still one of the best. The pure singing style of the late renaissance/early Baroque is siblime and very different from Post Baroque opera writing most people are use to. The Aria 'Possente spirto' is 8 minutes of heavenly singing in Hades; here Orfeo fails to convince Charon to allow him entry to Hades, but this is one of the single most beautiful pieces of writing for voice I have ever heard.

    5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

    4 out of 5 stars The let's-get-our-act-together album........2007-03-18

Being the second HIM album I have ever listened to, it had been the most disappointing one, but that was before I met this album's predecessor, and after that, I think I could come up with aobjective assessment of how HIM has progressed into this.

First off, this isn't your gothic/romantic rock/metal album. This is something entirely different. It has fast-paced songs with heart-wrenching choruses, atmospheric keyboards, a mixture of acoustic and electric guitars and good solos. Lyrically, it can't rival Razorblade Romance or Greatest Lovesongs, but overall it is great. These were the upsides.

Now, onto the downsides of this album. I don't know what exactly Ville Valo found wrong with the voice he used in the first two albums of HIM, but his new voice is certainly a downside, because it makes the album sound like it had been sung by a thirteen year old kid who was somehow let into the band; not at all good. The second downside is that, this album also marks HIM's growing obsession with making riffs sound almost overrated. The overall fluffy and crunchy guitar riffs do have certain strong points, but, like in "This Fortress of Tears", they sometimes are unnecessary. The third downside is the final song, "The Path", the unnecessarily stretched out meant-to-be epic. A two-to-three minutes cut out from this closer could make it amazing, but it just soars below average, and brings the album to a bad end. The fourth downside is the placement of "Soul on Fire"; while it is a great song, after "Sweet Pandemonium", it shifts the mood too far away, and you can't help but laugh out loud after you are done with your shock. Last but not least, the album's overall sound carries a hint of, "Well, we did great stuff, but we want to put some of Deep Shadows stuff into this too, so let's create a mixture of Razorblade, Greatest Lovesongs and Deep Shadows in this!". And this approach doesn't help the album, it feels somewhat out of place.

Overall, this is the only interruption of the downward spiral HIM has gotten into after and with Deep Shadows, but it is a good album and is among this band's top three. I'd highly recommend it for those that have a taste for somewhat gothic and rocky albums.

5 out of 5 stars True definition of Music.......2006-11-10

HIM defines music in a way no other band can ever hope to achieve. This album was and is one I listen to a lot. Most music today is either pop fluff or rap agony. I want music that gets my blood pumping and prepares me for another day at work.

1 out of 5 stars i've tried them, but this is just misserable music........2006-07-30

Ive listened to tracks from various albums and don't see why people like them. I mean, the vocalist always sounds like he's singing with a cold and I can't see anything spectacular with the instruments.

Even though I havn't given them much on stars, i'm giving them the one there because I see potential, I don't mind the "Wings of a Butterfly" song because it's a bit dark and has a catchy riff. But I'll have to be convinced to change my views.

    5 out of 5 stars Ville Valo-the poet.......2006-06-12

This is the last HIM cd to finish my collection and what a way to finish it. Another great solid album from HIM, not one bad song on the whole album. If you like HIM and dont have this album you have no time to waste. I cant say this enough Ville Valo is a great poet!!!!! HIM is the best band ever period

5 out of 5 stars Love Metal by HIM.......2006-05-26

Plain and simple, this is HIM's greatest album ever!!!! I simply LOVE every song on this entire album. And don't let the number of tracks mislead you. The album is just seven minutes short of an hour! The shortest song is Soul on Fire at 4:02. BUY THIS ALBUM,IT'S TOTALLY WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!!!

This sixth installment of the James Bond cycle was dogged by something more serious than mere creative hiccup: the departure of the iconic Sean Connery from the title role. If the film's strong screenplay and grittier, more realistic action sequences were a plus, the producers insistence on recasting Bond with another unknown (as Connery had been before Dr. No) was less sage; Australian model George Lazenby became an uncomfortable cinematic footnote and trivia subject after he, too, refused to reprise the role. But the presence of John Barry insured that the series' musical continuity, even if the composer took the opportunity to expand his palette to include the same sorts of contemporary Euro-jazz/pop influences (including early synths) then percolating through the comedy and adventure scores of Morricone. Legend Louis Armstrong forged the Barry-Hal David penned, "We Have All the Time in the World," into one of the most sublime (and unusual) of the "Bond songs;" it was the first not to be used as a title theme and marked the last recording of Armstrong's remarkable career. Thus inspired, Barry rose to the occasion with what remains one of his most subtle and introspective Bond scores. This digitally remastered edition effectively doubles the running time of the original with 10 tracks of previously unreleased cues, music that further underscores the mature, almost melancholy essence of what remains the composer's most unique contribution to the Bond canon. --Jerry McCulley

    5 out of 5 stars The best.......2007-07-07

I could listen to this soundtrack over and over and never get bored. This is clearly the best Bond soundtrack. "From Russia with Love" is quite good, but "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" provides a great combination of two vocal tracks and instrumental tracks which are nuanced. The cd is worth the cost to just get Louis Armstrong's "We Have All the Time in the World" - a subtle but emotional and optimistic song. Even the Christmas song "Do You Know How Christmas Trees Are Grown?" is fun, ironic romp of a children's song. Who would have thought a children's Christmas song would be included in a 007 film, and included in its soundtrack, AND even work well!

John Barry was at the top of his game with this soundtrack. The main theme "This Never Happens To The Other Feller", a variation on the famous 007 theme, although not the definitive version, has great twists with xylophones, and a little keyboard action that is both playful and creative, while simultaneously holding to the dramatic, spy roots of the original theme.

Well worth the price. On a footnote, seriously consider revisiting this film. First of all it has Diana Rigg (of Avenger's fame) as the leading lady. She is a true equal to Bond as a character, showing her smarts, cunning, strength to say no to him, and still being one of the sexiest women out there. Lazenby is not as bad as some have said although he's not great. Overall a pretty damn good film with a few MINOR weak points.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, driving score.......2007-06-21

I don't know why I waited so long to acquire a copy of this soundtrack. It ranks among the best soundtracks I've heard, along with the likes of Star Trek: The Motion Picture by Jerry Goldsmith (look for the 20th Anniversary edition; forget the original version), any of The Lord Of The Rings soundtracks by Howard Shore, and the instantly recognizable Raiders Of The Lost Ark by John Williams. John Barry really has the gift, and this soundtrack proves it.

The powerful opening credit theme is repeated on several tracks, and this is a good thing. It is driving and exciting, really giving the feeling of impending action.

In listening to the opening credit theme I was thinking how appropriate this cut would be for a college football marching band. Its tempo is conducive to a marching pace, and being a brass-heavy arrangement it would carry well to the crowd. Does anyone know of any college band that has done this song?

Louis Armstrong is widely known as a trumpet player, but he also did a lot of singing in his musical career. His rendition of We Have All The Time In The World is a joy to experience.

Mr. Luckard's review was very helpful in creating a CD-R of the CD I purchased; my thanks to him. I was unable to fit the entire CD on an 80-minute CD-R using the lossless WAV format. I don't understand why the CD-R wouldn't hold the whole album, but Mr. Luckard's review proved doubly useful in selecting which track to leave off!

If you're a Bond fan, soundtrack hound, or just into orchestral music, this soundtrack is well worth picking up. At less than $9 at the time I purchased it, the price was also more than fair.

5 out of 5 stars Easily John Barry's greatest work in the Bond franchise.......2007-05-07

This soundtrack is a great one for John Barry fans and Bond fans alike. Barry's innovative use of the synthesizer is tastefully done in the film and the tracks really showcase his talents of composing and arranging.

5 out of 5 stars On Her Queen Majesty's Secret Service: We Have All The Time In The World.......2007-04-13

For most critics if you listen to them never liked George Lazenby destroyed the actor in the role who replaced Sean Connery as 007.
For George Lazenby he is the best (ask my mum) the soundtrack to the movie really brought life to the character around the Swiss Alps in Switzerland, to London, to Portugal, and the music is the most memorable soundtrack of the James Bond series with the subtitle We Have All The Time In The World.
    John Barry at his best..

Most of the music for James Bond films has been excellent, but John Barry outdid himself on "OHMSS". This has always been one of my personal favorites, and this updated CD (with bonus tracks) is even better. Critics panned George Lazenby for reasons I will never understand, and in so doing, cause people to overlook this wonderful soundtrack album. Besides, it's a good movie!

5 out of 5 stars If You Love Classical Music, This CD Is For You .......2007-01-10

This compilation of movie themes is one of the most pleasurable CD's you'll ever own.

5 out of 5 stars Probably Decca's best "Adagios" set.......2006-07-26

I say "probably," since it's hard to outdo its "Beethoven Adagios" set. I've only bought a few of these "Adagios" sets because, looking over the track listings of so many, there's just so much overlap. Here, you get the best single collection of the bunch. Here, I was introduced to Addinsell's "Warsaw Concerto," and for that alone it was worth the price. But let's not forget a significant number of other gorgeous classic adagios: Beethoven's "Emperor" concerto (used in a gorgeous film, "Picnic at Hanging Rock"), Bach's "Air on a G String," Mahler's Adaghietto from Symphony no. 5, some obligatory Mozart, the Barber adagio, Debussy's Claire de lune, and - oh lovely! - Schubert's String Quintet in C. Then there are much-appreciated entries (Cinema Paradiso, Gabriel's Oboe) from a personal favorite composer, Ennio Morricone, one of the actual official film composers (as distinct from long-dead composers whose music was used in film) used for this collection, along with a couple from another personal favorite, John Barry. (You'd really need to get Barry's own set of "adagios," titled "Moviola," to get his best, e.g., the title theme to "Out of Africa" and to "Somewhere in Time." For Morricone, the master of the romantic adagio in the past century, go with "Itinerary of a Genius" or individual soundtracks like "Legend of 1900," "Lolita," "Once Upon a Time in America," "Once Upon a Time in the West," and others.)

A couple drawbacks to this set: (1) The adagio from Rachmaninov's 2nd is truncated to a mere 4 minutes. For this, one is well advised to purchase a CD with the entire concerto, or get a full version of just the adagio elsewhere (Decca does include a full version on its "Romantic Adagios" collection). (2) So much from so many composers is included, that there is too little room for more Beethoven. I'd prefer the adagio from the "Pathetique" sonata to the "Moonlight" one which was included here. For Beethoven adagios, you need the "Beethoven Adagios" set as an accompaniment (where you get, among other things, adagios for the op. 130 string quartet, the 6th symphony, the violin concerto, piano concerto no. 3, the 7th symphony, and the romance for violin no. 2, op. 50). If you're a fan of Mozart music often used in the movies, there's the "Mozart Adagios" set and/or the "Amadeus" soundtrack.

I'm a "purist" as to a few works; I'd rather hear the entirety of the "Emperor" concerto than merely the adagio, for instance. In plenty of other cases, an adagio movement is heard just fine as a stand-alone work; plenty of the most beautiful music is used for adagio movements, as these sets make clear enough.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CDs you'll ever own.......2003-03-23

This is an excellent selection of music. I listen to it every chance I get. It is great just to put in your CD player on "repeat" and allow it to soothe and inspire you for a few hours, for an evening, or an for entire day.

One reason I chose it was that I was looking for music that could simply be a nice background noise for when I'm working on things that require reading and concentration. I wanted music that would not be a distraction, and this does a good job. It is also great to listen to when doing almost anything, like even cleaning the house or doing laundry. I will admit though, that listening to the selection from Swan Lake might make you want to dance around the living room.

Also, besides the obvious ones that everybody knows (Beethoven's 5th, or Canon in D, etc.) I do not know enough to distinguish specific songs from their composers, which is why I was hesitant to buy a classical CD soley of one artist because once I got it I may not have liked it or been familiar with any of the songs. That is why I picked Movie Adagios because I knew it would be a selection of some of the best classical music from the movies, which it is.

    5 out of 5 stars Sublime!.......2002-09-08

Of course, I'm nuts for classical music and classic movies, so this compilation of music featured in some of the most famous movies ever made is an absolutely ideal CD.

Filmmakers have been raiding the classical music files since the days of the silents in order to heighten the mood of a scene and provide a greater emotional impact. Barber's Adagio for Strings has been used not only in "Platoon", as this CD lists, but also in "The Elephant Man". While there's only a small snippet of Rachmininoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 here, it's worth remembering that the entire piece is used throughout the magnificent "Brief Encounter" to heighten the impact of the romance. Mozart's Trio (Cosi fan tutte) was brilliantly used in "Sunday, Bloody Sunday" to comment on a complex romantic triangle.

There are also 5 pieces written directly for the screen, two by Ennio Morricone (the haunting Gabriel's Oboe from "The Mission" and the exquisite Nuovo Cinema Paradiso from "Cinema Paradiso"), two by John Barry (a lovely version of We Have All the Time in the World from the James Bond classic "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and the elegiac John Dunbar Theme from "Dances With Wolves") and one by Michael Nyman (The heart asks pleasure first from "The Piano").

I love this CD, to relax with, to read with, and just immerse myself in the spectacular sounds of genius.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC.......2001-12-03

This is a great classical piece for the lovers of classical, as well as the ones who may hate it. These Adagios CDs get beter and better each time there is a new release. I must warn you there some good as well as some bad ones. There is a certain Adagio flavor for everyones. At the present I have others, but the ones I truly enjoy are Violin Adagios, The Piano Adagios and this one. This compilation is great for reading. Furthermore this CD can be great evening music... for sleeping.

Those of you who have not got on board with the ADAGIOS, please get on board the next time you go to your favorite music store. You may be surprised at how you have enriched yourselves with great music for your listening pleasure.
