If you're not familiar with pianist Mitsuko Uchida, consider purchasing this two-disc "tasting menu," culled from her ever-growing discography. The selections mostly show Uchida at her best, from her dynamically charged, virile Mozart A Minor Sonata (K. 310) and D Minor Concerto (K. 466) to the fire and ice with which she sculpts Schoenberg's Six Little Pieces and a handful of Debussy Etudes. Beethoven's C Minor Variations and same-key Schubert Impromptu have rarely sounded so purposefully bleak, while Schubert's Third and Fourth Impromptus from D. 899 and the Moments Musicaux No. 3 are refined to a fault. The pianist commands the technique and tonal control to pull off all the fanciful articulations and sly rubatos she desires in Schumann's Carnaval, although some listeners might prefer Rubinstein's uncluttered directness. In all, Uchida's stimulating musicianship and supreme keyboard mastery deserve a place in any serious piano collection. --Jed Distler

"This could have been a box set if we went after everyone we wanted to connect with. We finally had to say 'enough is enough,' there will be other records." In mastering, the disc ended up being three minutes too long for production, resulting in a last minute cut, and a collection of exclusive remixes available only from 1320records.com. "The best thing about this project for us has been making some new friends and the prospects of more music and collaborations in the future." The new, full-length album "Artifact: Perspectives" features remixes of ARTiFACT studio tracks from Bill Laswell, Slicker, Ming+Fs, Elliot Lipp w/ Leo123, Mr. Lif, Richard Devine, Machine Drum, Karsh Kale, Collective Efforts, Genetic, Metrognome,Lowpro Lounge feat. ill 45, Bassnectar, Sub-ID, & Eustachian.

I wish there was a 3 and a half star button.......2006-12-06
I bought this CD kind of on a whim while i was at Best Buy, because I have been trying to order "Live at Home" from Amazon for like 3 months and Im not sure if they know its out of print or what. Anyways this Cd is decent- Its good background music good for driving and chilling out while reading or flying or whatever. Its definitely worth hearing although it gets a bit repetitive. And on a few of the songs this woman's voice just sounds horrible. "I wonder why they never tried to tell me" over and over droning in your head. Its kind of trippy, ethereal lounge music/ trance. At the beginnings of a lot of the songs it kind of sounds like it is looking for the right frequency in your brain and then it hits it right on! If you've, heard STS9 perform live you may be disappointed. I'm glad i have it in my collection but I wouldn't recommend it if you've never heard STS9 before.

The Best Unknown Arranger in Dodge!.......2007-02-02
So you're asking yourself, "Why do I want another big band CD by a guy I don't even know"? On paper, it might be an easy decision; 1) usual big band instrumention...well, on one track, you do hear piccolo trumpet and cello which isn't exactly out of the Glen Miller bag of tricks, 2) it's the usual mix of standards and original compostions, 3) it's the same first-call cats from the west coast that you hear on virtually every big band CD like Bergeron, Christlieb, Martin, Higgins, Henry et al and 4) who in the world is Gary Urwin? OK, so you decide to pass. The correct answer is that Gary Urwin just happens to be the freshest thing that's happened to big band composition and arranging since Bill Holman was in knickers. On almost every track, he finds very inventive and intriguing nuances that add a freshness to the big band format. Whether it is unusual voicings, both inter and intra-sectional, or rhythmic twists that catch your ear, I believe you'll thoroughly enjoy this CD. The musicianship is superb as you would expect from these stalwarts, the recording is clean and crisp and the writing is...well, it's worth writing home about. I can't see how you wouldn't enjoy this music. By the way, did I mention that it swings like crazy? Gary Urwin is a force to be reckoned with!
Big band at its Best!.......2002-02-22
This cd really surprised me as I had never heard of Gary Urwin. I took a chance and now I'm desparate for another masterpiece by this gifted arranger/composer. The soloists as well as the section work are superb. The man is an artist in hiding and I hope this puts him on the jazz map. It's a cd I do not get tired of listening to because with every listen,I hear so many new things that bring smiles to my ears and my heart.
Awesome writing.......2001-07-26
Gary is an excellant writer and arranger. Imaginative is a word that stands out!! Exciting arranged charts with outstanding players makes this cd a can't miss and big band listening experience. Combine an ensemble of remarkable musicians with great writing chops you will surely enjoy this cd!!!!

Tonal Expressions.......2002-07-28
Don Shirley is magnificent! I bought this album when it first came out in 1955 and for all these years it was my very favorite. His rendition of "Love is a Simple Thing" sounds like a whole symphony orchestra. His talent is remarkable and his stylings have never been exceeded by any of the great musicians that have come along since he began entertaining and amazing his audiences! Thank you for re-relesing these GREAT recordings on CD and for recognizing this is a talent for all ages and times!
Unforgettable!.......2000-11-12
Once you've heard Don Shirley play a song, you never think of it in quite the same way again. He finds subtle meanings and emotions that everyone else (maybe even the composer) has missed. He has a remarkable and inimitable talent, and his work is never less than the best. This album is no exception to his standard of perfection.
What a delight!.......2000-07-05
It's wonderful to have these albums available again after too many years. "Someone to Watch Over Me" is unbelievably, achingly beautiful. "I Can't Get Started" begins so gently and builds to an amazingly powerful crescendo. Don, if you're listening, more, please!
Bewitching!.......2000-02-02
From driving bass-piano rhythm to the quitest, most subtle, and moving tone poems you'll ever hear, this music will continue to hold you. In Don Shirley's hands, each song takes on depth and character you never knew existed. I first heard "Piano Perspectives" when I was a teenager, but the music never left me. It is wonderful to see that Don Shirley is in acton, and I can't wait for concerts and new CDs. He is the complete artist.

Customer Reviews:
A good overview.......2006-07-25
This recording is very good if you want to gain an overview of Ian Bostridge's abilities as a lieder singer and his repertoire. So it includes Lieder of German (Schubert, Schumann), French (Fauré, Débussy) and English composers (f.e. Britten and Vaughn Williams). The combination and the order of the songs seems well-considered. The songs are never taken out of their contexts. Where cycles are included they are complete. And the order of the songs and composers avoids any abrupt contrasts. Although there is nothing new for me on this disc, I like it and there will certainly be situations in which I'll prefer to hear just this one. There is only one thing to criticize: If it shall be a recording for people who want to learn about "lied" and Ian Bostridge as a lieder singer - and this is obviously the intention - there should be the texts of the songs included!
Bostridge Covers Familiar Territory for a Tasteful, Often Beautiful Recital CD.......2006-02-20
In what continues to be one of the most prolific recording careers, tenor Ian Bostridge continues his love affair with the art song with this new collection of German lieder, French chansons and English folk songs. Beyond his clean, full tone and crisp diction, trademarks of his for the past decade, he seems less tentative here than in past recordings and displays a more natural sense of phrasing and interpretation. Recently, Bostridge acquitted himself well on Schubert's darkly sonorous "Winterreise" in 2004 and maneuvered through the alternately dream-like and discordant notes of Benjamin Britten's "Canticles" in 2002.
Here his program reflects his impeccable taste starting with seven Franz Schubert compositions sung in flawless-sounding German ranging from the playful "Die Forelle" with its rolling piano to the mournful "Erlkönig" based on Goethe's tragic folk story about a little boy and the elf king. Of the Schubert pieces, I think he gives his best performance comes on the quietly majestic "Im Frühling" with subtly beautiful piano work by the singer's frequent accompanist Julius Drake. Bostridge then moves into four selections from Robert Schumann, for the most part subdued except for the escalating patriotic-sounding fervor he displays on "Die beiden Grenadiere" and Drake's halting measures on "Mein Wagen rollet Langsam" adding some welcome tension to the melancholy tone.
Six pieces from Gabriel Fauré demonstrate the wide variety of his music, which Bostridge covers with particular vocal flair, whether it means keeping up with the arpeggiated figures of "Fleur jetée" or evoking the haunting tranquility of "Clair de lune". The eight-minute "Fêtes galantes II" is a perfect example of how Claude Debussy introduced modernity to traditionally romantic music with bold tonal changes, and the singer responds with sharp delivery and a minimum of theatrics. The folk songs that conclude the recording are pretty though not as challenging. Bostridge does pleasing versions of Vaughan Williams's "Linden Lea" and a 16th century song arranged by Cecil Sharp, "The Death of Queen Jane", though neither is particularly resonant.
The last selection, Percy Grainger's arrangement of "Brigg Fair" benefits from a haunting polyphony conducted by Stephen Layton. Some of the selections on the recording reflect a bit too risk-averse approach, for example, Britten's artsy arrangements of "The Ash Grove" and "Greensleeves" are overly familiar. Regardless, this is a fine recital disc from a singer whose scholarly knowledge informs his interpretations and whose talent provides an unexaggerated beacon for the beauty of the music.
