The late Klaus Tennstedt was an on-again, off-again conductor. When he was good, he was incendiary; and when he was bad, he was really a mess. It didn't help that most of his records were made with the London Philharmonic, possibly the most slovenly orchestra in the UK on any given day. Here, with the much, much finer Berlin Philharmonic under his baton, he evidently had a series of good days. These are very fine performances of Wagner orchestral favorites, and the only thing that may have prevented their being acclaimed on initial release was the not-so-great early digital sound--nicely cleaned up on this economical and intelligent remastering. --David Hurwitz

This near 80min. budget/German compilation, comprises of most of Meastro Stokowski's RCA/BMG stereo recorded Wagner output, from 1961-1974. The 2003 German remastering engineers do not add any significant sound enhancement to what were considered state of the art recordings from their era. Furthermore some of the tracks are either coarse or too heavy in the bass, requiring treble bass adjustments. Stokowski's great interpretation of "Ride of the Valkyries", with sopranos and contralto performers is included. My old LP of the same recording was just as thrilling. Included are orchestral excerpts from each of the "Ring" operas, as well as the Romanesque overture to "Rienzi". The disc is poorly annotated not even mentioning Stokowski's idiosyncrasies of interpretation, instrumentation, and tempo. So, the whole project has a half-hearted faceless effort put on it. Add a star if your a true die-hard Stokowski fan.

Stokowski grew to be very old but never venerable. Capable of chasing secretaries around his desk at 94, what problems could Wagner pose? None--these recordings from London (1973-74) when the conductor was only 91 and 92 are vigorous, sweeping, immensely enjoyable performances. RCA has bounced this material around in several previous releases, and the sound was always spectacular. Both the LSO and Royal Phil. sound terrific, and without wallowing in the sonic Mardi Gras of Phase 4 Stereo, the kind he got form Decca during this period, this CD throws the music at us, as Stokowski himself did.

As to the famous Stokowski penchant for taffy-pulling, his tempos are almost straight here, and when he does lean into the rubato, as in the Tristan Prelude and Liebestod, one feels the ghost of Wagner smiling down. Stokowski must be his kindred spirit for romantic fervor. Five stars for a cllection rivalled only by Furtwangler, Karajan, and Klemperer (really).

Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra turn in a juicy pair of Tannhäuser excerpts, and the rest of the disc belongs to the incomparable George Szell/Cleveland Orchestra combination. The great novelty is the best ever performance of the rarely heard Faust overture. One of the very few mature Wagner works not related to an opera, the piece has been largely ignored by critics, performers, and audiences for no discernible reason. It's really good music, and if you like Wagner and don't know it, you should snap this disc up without delay. Not only are the performance standards of the very highest quality, the disc is also sold at a budget price. Where else can you find such a good deal? --David Hurwitz

4 out of 5 stars Why not the Szell Tannhauser Overture.......2005-04-09

Back in the days of LP, Epic Records issued a Wagner disc of George Szell and his Cleveland Orch. performing the Die Meisteringer Prelude, the Prelude and Love Death from Tristan and the Tannhauser Overture. All three performances were nothing less than amazing. But for some crazy reason, Sony has chosen only to release the Meistersinger and Tristan music on CD.
The Tannhauser Overture has disappeared. So on this CD, we have an inferior Tannhauser Overture by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Where is the Szell recording? Fortunately, I have it on a very good sounding cassette. But it should be on CD. Sony please wake up and issue this great overture performance.

George Szell is a true master at capturing the essence of Wagner. His balancing of orchestration and phrase interpretation is as close to perfection as I have heard. He provides a stunning rendition of Rienzi Overture which has never been one of my favorites, but now it is! Hard to beat Szell when it comes to Wagner.

I very much enjoy Eugene Ormandy with most Tchaikovsky works and a few others, but his Wagner is spotty. The Philadelphia string section comes through great....sometime too great. When I am expecting the brass section to make their statement, I have to concentrate just to hear it. The one exception is the Grand March from Tannhauser, where Ormandy does very well.

Recommendation: A great CD to own in a basic Wagner collection.

Like many my age I cut my musical teeth on Toscanni. A piece by him when heard determined forever what it should sound like. I grew out of that mindset eventually but, all in all, it served me well. One time when I was in The Liberty Music Shop in Ann Arbor(a memorable place in an equally memorable city) I asked one of their knowledgeable clerks that, given my Toscanni bent what would be a good stero version and without a moments hesitation she said, "George Szell". She picked out a two lp album that included the Prelude to act one of Lohengrin. When I played it I knew the lady was right. Like Toscanni, Szell makes sparks with Wagner. I must have had a dozen versions of this music but none to compare with this. That album was one I treasured and when cd's came along Columbia reissued it but didn't include the first act prelude so it was a case of searching for something that came close. Over ten years later I found this cd and it is wonderful to hear the glorious Cleveland Orchestra in all it's power: the grail theme with cymbals exploding over the strings, brass with real bite, the whole thing is almost organic in the way it develops, blooms and becomes still. I find myself , when listening to this music, hitting the pause button because to follow it with anything is to destroy a sense of miracle. One of your reviewers said that something he had heard had, among other things, made him thank God that he had ears. This recording makes me glad I have a sound system that recreates music close to the original but even more glad that there is a recording in the first place and musicians to make it and producers to decide to put it all together. This cd is one of my "miracle recordings" that fill me with gratitude. It is simply superb.

5 out of 5 stars More Great Wagner By Szell.......2001-04-07

I am not a huge fan of opera, but I loved George Szell's "Wagner: Orchestral Excerpts" disc on Sony Essential Classics so much, that I bought this companion title of Wagner Orchestral Music. While this disc is not fully dedicated to Wagner recordings by the great Szell and Cleveland combination, it is every bit as delightful as the "Excerpts" title. (Eugene Ormandy conducts the Philadelphia Orchestra on the first two tracks, and the fourth track "Prelude to Act III" from "Lohengrin" as well). Simply put, I have enjoyed these two discs so much that I am ready to go see (gasp) a Wagner opera. Or at least watch one on Great Performances.

    This set, with Marek Janowski, offers the best disk of Wagner's early overtures and later occasional pieces that I know of, as well as a well-played disk of better-known "bleeding chunks" from the operas.

    Disk One, with the French Radio Phil, offers mainstream Wagner excerpts: the _Tannhäuser_ overture, the _Tristan_ prelude, the preludes to _Lohengrin_ Acts I and III, the _Siegfried Idyll_ and the _Meistersinger_ overture, with orchestral selections from Act III. All of this is very well played, and towards the top third, let's say, of a very crowded and competitive field. That makes them very good indeed.

    But disk 2, with the London Symphony Orchestra, offers some less common pieces, perhaps more enticing to the serious Wagnerian: the _Kaisermarsch_, the _Faust Overture_, the _Huldigungsmarsch_, the _Die Feen_ overture, the _American Centennial March_ and the _Das Liebesverbot_ overture.

    The Janowski/LSO disk offers easily the best playing of most of this music that I've ever heard. The _Faust_ overture in particular shines, as perhaps the earliest piece of great music that Wagner wrote. As is often the case with early Wagner, it sounds a bit like unknown Beethoven, with additional orchestral flavouring from Weber, but for the first time you hear a new voice: Wagner's own. This comes in the form of a new richness and darkness in orchestration (though the version played here includes revised orchestration by the mature Wagner), plus a real and effective dramatic instinct, allied with strong and distinctive themes. Wagner said the _Faust_ overture is the piece with which he "became Wagner", and he is surely right.

    Janowski even manages to convince me that there's some merit in the _American Centennial_ march, probably the worst music written by the mature Wagner, despite, as Cosima's _Diaries_ show, his sincere admiration for America. I've heard this piece in three other performances, in each of which it struck me as banal, emptily noisy, and interminable. But the London SO under Janowski work a miracle in finding some forward propulsion and argument, some contrasts of light and shade, and making the piece come quite close to working. It's only a small miracle, because even when brilliantly played this still isn't great music. But if you have to hear the American Centennial March_ at all, this is certainly the version to hear.

    The _Kaisermarsch_ is perhaps beyond rescue, but again, Janowski offers as good and as committed a performance of this piece as one is ever likely to hear. He also offers the best _Huldigungsmarsch_ I know of, and excellent accounts of the _Die Feen_ and _Das Liebesverbot_ overtures. Though the very best performances of these operatic overtures that I've heard are the versions that open the Sawallisch complete sets of these two operas.

    For very good versions of familiar orchestral excerpts from the mature operas, plus outstanding performances of some Wagner rarities, this disk is strongly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Ysaye--One of the Violin Immortals.......2000-03-22

    Eugene Ysaye is one of the great 20th century violinists. This cd contains all known Ysaye recordings. The last four tracks are tracks of him conducting the Cincinnati Symphony. His touch and sweet tone are remarkable. When you hear him play, his style is unmistakable. Isaac Stern regards Ysaye as one of the great influences on his playing. This is a cd to have if you value hearing all the great violinists. The quality is fine and very clear, considering how old all of these originally were.

          4 out of 5 stars Hard to find Wagner Orchestral Pieces.......2007-07-02

          I purchased the CD several years ago because I love Wagner's orchestral writing but I am not a fan of listening to entire operas, particularly ones as lengthy and heavy as Wagner's. I was having difficulty finding several of the pieces on this CD without duplicating pieces I owned on several other recordings ie; the Parsifal excerpts and the Siegfried Idyll. I found the performances good but not on a par with the performances on some of the other Wagner recordings I own conducted by Solti, Szell, Maazel & Levine. The recorded sound was passable considering the age of the recordings but not on a par with that of other Wagner recordings I own. I give the CD a 4 star rating based on the orchestral playing and the fact that some of the pieces on the recording are difficult to find.

          Except for a disappointing couple of rounds with Klaus Tennstedt, Wagner has been scarce from Berlin since the death of Karajan. Recently there was a very fine CD of excerpts with Abbado, and this one under Maazel (featuring material that doesn't overlap Abbado's), shows off the orchestra's ravishing tone and effortless virtuosity. Maazel can be a perverse interpreter--one almost expects it of him--but here he's behaving well, and his ability to make ensembles sound good is undeniable. Some say he has more podium technique than anyone else in his generation. Be that as it may, ths gorgeous-sounding bargain issue is a winner.
