Shostakovitch: Rayok - Chamber Symphony - Prelude & Scherzo - Spivakov - Moscow Virtuosi

Editorial Reviews
Album Description

Dmitri Shostakovitch (1906-1975)

Chamber Symphony Op. 110a
Anti-formalist Rayok
Prelude and Scherzo Op.11

Alfred Schnittke (1934-1998)

Tribute to Dmitri Shostakovitch

Moscow Virtuosi
Vladimir Spivikov, director

After Alfred Schnittke (Capriccio 67016) and Avro Part (Capriccio 67079), Spivikov and the Moscow Virtuosos now turn to the most important Soviet composer of the 20th century: Dmitri Shostakovitch. At the centre of the new CD are two of the most interesting works by this composer. One of them, the chamber symphony to the string quartet no. 8, has been among Shostakovitch's more well known works from the start. The other, titled "Anti-formalist Rayok" was never published while Shostakovitch was alive - it is a very black datire about the outrageous and life-threatening demands composers, like all other people working creatively, were subjected to during the Stalinist era. Officials decided which music was suitable for the Soviet people and which was not. The brutal ignorance of those in power and the victims' despair are shown in Shostakovitch's grotesque, and to this day almost unknown piece of music.
