Very Enjoyable for all music fans.......2006-03-02

This is very good collection of music that brings to life a wide variety of music that is both old and contemporary. The selections vary from composers, historical and famous such as Pavarotti and Puccini to today's James Horner (Titanic, A Beauituful Mind) and John Williams (Star Wars, Sabrina, Jaws, Saving Private Ryan).

If you enjoy the sounds of Sarah Brightman, Charlotte Church, Enya, Kate Bush, Andrea Bocelli, and various theatre music (Andrew Lloyd Webber (Evita, Cats), then you will find this collection worthy of your appreciation.

I have often wondered why classical music radio channels do not play modern composers (i.e., Horner, Willams), and am glad that this album gives them credit that they deserve. There is so many good compositions being created every day that only appear to have a voice on the big screen, which is unfortunate.

Track 11, composed by The Doors, and is a nice version, indeed. I also enjoy the Bond players giving a new twist to some old favourites.

Absolutely Amazing! Two CDs packed with the world's most beautiful classical music..........2005-11-08

First, let me begin by saying that I am by no means an expert in classical music, but have grown to appreciate it immensely in the past year. I can say wholeheartedly that this is the most beautiful compilation of music I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. It's simple irresistible. There are few words to describe how emotional it is to hear Pavarotti sing "II Canto", or Placido Domingo belt out "Questa o quella". You just get numb with joy!! I have NO idea what they are saying but a translation not necessary. The entire collection (TWo jammed-packed CDs) is phenomenal (excluding the selections from "Bond" which I found to be particularly annoying and not at all "classical" in the true sense of the word). There is something here for everyone, regardless of your personal musical tastes or tolerances.

A guaranteed hit -- Don't miss this one.

This disc is essential for Jussi Bjoerling fans--doesn't that include almost everyone?--and for anyone who wants a distinctive sampling from recorded opera's most eloquent age. Best are Bjoerling's duets with baritone Robert Merrill--especially the classic "Au fond du temple saint" from The Pearl Fishers--and the scene with Renata Tebaldi, "Signore, ascolta; non piangere, Liu," from Turandot. Although the sound is variable--and sometimes disappointingly, annoyingly glitch-ridden in these recordings made between 1950 and 1959--the voice, the style, and the passion of the inimitable Bjoerling more than make up for it. --David Vernier

Superb singing by my favorite tenor.......2006-12-29

I can hardly tell you how much I loved this CD when musicologist David St. George gave
gave me a copy of it. Each time I hear the CD, Bjoerling's singing astounds me, because
depsite his age, he was in excellent voice when he recorded the "Pearl Fishers Duet."
My only complaint about Bjoerling is that a year before my birth, he died. :)

The beautiful main duet from Bizet's "The Pearlfishers" ("Au fond du temple saint") is the centerpiece of this disc, that also features pieces from "Aida", "Tosca", "Turandot" and "Otello", amongst others by Puccini and Verdi.

Legendary opera stars Robert Merrill, Zinka Milanov, Licia Albanese and Renata Tebaldi have the kind of voices that one rarely hears these days in opera. It's such a pleasure to know that these singers have received immortality thanks to CD reissues like this one. As other reviewers have noted, these recordings have great historical value but don't expect miracles with the overall sound quality.

The Kiss of Jussi.......2006-08-23

Bjoerling never misses his pitch, never struggles with any note in his repertoire, never runs out of breath, and most importantly, never fails to makes any note perfectly beautiful. Bjoerling's supporting cast are immortalized by their association with this incomparable singer. Every track in this album is historically as well as artistically precious.

Notes on a classic.......2006-06-04

I'm prompted to comment only because a reviewer below offers no criticism of this famous duets recording exceept for the Manon Lescaut excerpt with Licia Albanese. As it happens, the only weakness in the cuts with Bjorling and Merrill is the workaday conducting by Renato Cellini (and the boxy sound that deserves the same miraculous remastering BMG has recently given to Toscanini). The Met was a singers' house and often fell short on conducting, saddling Golden Age voices with less than stellar maestros like Cillini, Fausto Cleva, and Leinsdorf (who actually does a very good job, for him, in Turandot, Bjorling's last opera recording before he died).

But the RCA Manon Lescaut from Rome was a wonderful exception. It is arguably the most satisfying collaboration in Bjorling's career, thanks to Jonel Perlea and the inspired Licia Albanese. Others might argue for the Aida with Milanov or the famous La Boheme with de los Angeles under Beecham. But for me the dramatic intensity of this Manon Lescaut is unparalleled. It's true that Albanese doesn't sound like a lush, full-voiced Puccini soprano, but she inhabits the role of Manon with astonishing realism and passion.

Pearl Fishers Duet.......2006-03-18

The Pearl Fishers Duet by Georges Bizet is well presented and delightfully sung. There are several additional duets on this CD which, whilst sung correctly and well, do not come over with the same lightness and flow. They would not be the best of their genre.

What a Great Voice!.......2005-01-05

Adding another album to his growing list, Russel Watson presents 13 more tracks to his fans and new listeners. If you enjoyed The Voice and Encore you're definitely not wasting your money on purchasing yet another album.
Watson's combination of classical operatic pieces with symphonic pop orchestration puts a new twist on some old favorites. If you prefer listening to old remastered Caruso recordings this may not be the album for you, but if you like hearing old favorites remade with a twist and a great voice this is definitely for you.
With just enough spice to promote further interest and the same stunning delivery of each song as in his previous albums, Watson delivers another nearly flawless piece of work for us to enjoy!

better, but still awful.......2004-12-15

ALthough he has improved immensely since his other recordings he still is incredibly sub-standard as an opera singer. Clearly, his adoring public don't seem to realise, or care. He continues to show a sloppy, ugly lack of technique and simply does not grasp foreign languages at all, not the italian which dominates this album, or the spanish, french or latin which is also included. Many of his higher notes are strained and forced, especially evident at the end of Granada.
The Grandiose, lavish orchestrations are again the best thing about this CD, and overtake as the star of the album.
The selection of songs is very pleasing though, with some surprisingly nice pop songs, which he actually does a decent job of.
He shamelessly imiates Dean Martin in That's Amore, and his impression is actually quite entertaining.
In the Pearl Fishers Duet, he arrogantly sings both parts himself, neither done very well, with the song irritatingly abridged to minimise the amount of singing he must do as a "baritone" (snigger).
Ave Maria is mundane, and uninspired in all aspects.
La Danza is tediously slow, with a dreadful orchestration and awful pronunciation.
Bohemian Rhapsody is a song that should not be redone by anyone, and this recording is dreary and uninspired.
Vesti la Guibba is done without much conviction. His cry of pain sounds like a forced laugh, and the "emotion" in his voice sounds incredibly false. He also ventures off-key at one stage.
Without a doubt, the best part og this album,in my opinion, was the duet with cleopatra, The Best That Love Can Be. I know people will disagree with me here, and i'm surprised myself that i like this song, but i think it is a very lovely song, with very nice singing for both performers.
If you're thinking of buying this CD, download the best that love can be off the internet, and forget the rest. It's really not worth it, unless you want a classic example of how not to sing opera.

"Reprise" is no Prize.......2004-11-05

A very poor CD both in choice of music and voice quality. Mr. Watson's voice sounds strained and tired in many of the songs. I was very disappointed and sorry that I purchased "Reprise".

Better than the second time around.......2004-10-06

Russell Watson and his hyper publicity machine have returned to bless or curse us once again with both pop and operatic selections, over orchestrated and over-hyped as always.

I bought this CD knowing full well what to expect because I have the first 2 and had absolutely no reason to buy this other than to see how Watson would fare against a spinto aria like Canio's lament in "Vesti La Giubba".
I didn't expect it to go that well and I wasn't disappointed.
Seems this guy's voice is starting to sound stranger with each release....not bad mind you, just well...not good in an operatic context either.

Anyhow, I liked this CD much better than his sophmore CD "Encore".
The song selection is well balanced between arias, neapolitan favs and the usual fare of Euro-pop.
I even like some of his Euro-pop stuff like "In the living years".

The main reason I couldn't bring myself to give this a 4 star rating, though tempted, was because of the odd sounding vocalizations on the operatic arias. His voice seems like it's tired or pushed...I can't place it but it has me wondering why this kid doesn't take some time off, buy himself a top-notch coach / teacher, fix his vocal problems and come back better than ever.While he's at it he should really go live in Italy for a year and get a grasp of the language. One would think that over the span of 3 CD's his Italian would be near perfect by now but that's not the case....thus 3 stars.

Being a tenor myself I respect his talent, but I also believe that singing operatic selections is a touchy deal and can hurt an artist as much or more if not done right, as it can help.
I'm glad that Russell's label continues to promote his career as well as it does but I hope that the self-proclaimed "people's tenor" will give the people a finished product, vocally, in his next release.

All in all this could be called "The Voice" part 3 because the formula hasn't changed and it seems to be quite profitable to both Decca and Watson so I don't expect things to change too much in the years to come. Love him or hate him...he'll be back.

Terrifyingly bad.......2004-07-09

The worst singing I've ever heard is embodied in this recording. Russell Watson just don't have the voice and emotional intensity for almost all the music that he has chosen to sing. The result is hoarse vocalism and uninvolving performances.

The US edition has four tracks that are not on here. It began with 'The Voice'...It was followed by 'Encore'...now, Russell Watson returns with his stunning third album 'Reprise'. Effortlessly gliding through his trademark assortment of operatic arias and popular ballads, Russell's fantastic voice just seems to get stronger and stronger. I can only speak to one track.......2004-03-23

I have an odd hobby: I collect recorded versions of "Au Fond Du Temple Saint" the duet from "The Pearl Fishers" by Bizet. My only comment is that while Mr. Watson may have a passable voice, his rendition of "Au Fond Du Temple Saint is abominable. Not only has he egotistically attempted to sing both parts of a Tenor/Baritone duet, he has used an arrangement that destroys the beauty of the song. On top of all of that, the final climactic line in which the two friends pledge to be such even to death has been altered, for God knows what reason to mean something else alltogether. If you are a fan of Mr. Watson, you no doubt will like this CD. If, on the other hand you are a fan of the music that he sings, you may have a different opinion.

This CD is just further proof of Russell's amazing ability to make fantastic whatever he wants to sing. The Pearl Fishers duet is the most wonderful, powerful rendition I have heard. Core 'ngrato is so charged with emotion. I cannot get enough of Russell Watson. This is one not to be missed. I also have the US version, which has the most beautiful songs on, but this CD has more songs on, and is one not to be missed.

Another Great Effort!.......2004-01-23

Having greatly enjoyed Mr. Watson's recordings in the past, I was waiting with anticipation for the Reprise CD. It was worth the wait, and we love this CD!

I have noticed several negative reviews about this CD. After scrolling through the 250 plus reviews, I noticed that dozens of negative (1 star) reviews are from the same person! Obviously, this "A Music Fan" has a personal vendetta against Russell Watson and is trying to skew the rating results. Just my observation.

Really worth 5 Stars!.......2004-01-13

It's really worth the 5 stars, because it has some of the best singing by one of the brightest new singers around today.

Here's some of my faves:

"Nothing Sacred" (his great single, of course), "That's Amore" (one of the best versions I've heard in years), "Ave Maria" (you feel like your in a huge cathedral), "Core `ngrato" (very romantic, even though it's classical) "the Living Years" (Sooo sad), "Bohemian Rhapsody" (cool), and "the Best That Love Can Be" (you'll be amazed at Russell's voice).

Exciting, wonderful CD.......2003-11-21

This CD is one of the most exciting, high energy recordings ever put out by Watson. Included is probably the "gassiest" version EVER of "Bohemian Rhapsody". This song ROCKS with Watson's hard hitting vocals, delivering all his trademark POW, and then some! His "The Living Years" is a haunting and thought-provoking treatment of a beautifully done song. "That's Amore", "Ave Maria", "La danza", "Granada", "the Pearl Fishers' Duet", and "the Best That Love Can Be" will give you an idea of what a tremendous talent Watson is.

The sound is tremendous, the mixdown topnotch, and this performance deserves a lot more attention than it gets in the USA.
