Bach Trio Sonatas

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The trio sonatas were originally composed for Bach's son, Wilhelm Friedeman, to play on a mercifully obsolete monstrosity called a pedal harpsichord. This was a normal harpsichord with an organ-style pedal board attached, so you could play real organ music in your living room. In Bach's time of course, they didn't have those electric home organs that they used to give away all the time on game shows like Let's Make a Deal and The Price is Right. Anyway, these joyous, delightful pieces have since assumed their rightful place at the pinnacle of organ technique since they really are trios--for two hands and one pair of feet. Get it? Christopher Herrick's performances are just about perfect. --David Hurwitz

4 out of 5 stars Mostly good.......2007-05-26

A bit of a mixed bag. The symphonies are superb. This is one of the great symphony cycles. The piano sonatas are good, very good (analog) sound. The quartets are well recorded indeed, but there are better cycles out there. The rest is OK, and the sound is genrally good.

3 out of 5 stars Look at the List of Performers First.......2006-11-17

If you want most of Beethoven sitting on one bookshelf, this is a great bargain (especially if you shop for it on amazon.de). But few if any of the performances represent the pinnacles of interpretation that most listeners demand when Beethoven is the composer. The symphonies for instance: can Blomstedt be compared to Furtwangler or (if you lean toward historically informed instrumentation) Gardiner? Most amazingly, the artists who perform the quartets -- the heart of Beethoven's music -- are not even named in the listing.
On the other hand: Vivaldi: The Masterworks is a collection including the very best interpreters, such as Fabio Biondi! Bach Edition (complete Bach) is a fabulous selection of recordings made over 20 years, and almost the same praise can be given the Complete Mozart.

5 out of 5 stars this "masterworks" series is available much more cheaply from Amazon France.......2006-05-28

there are several sets in this series and it's much cheaper to buy these from Amazon France.

included are bach, beethoven, vivaldi, brahms, dvorak, schubert, handel, hayden, and mendelssohn.

they're even cheaper than the list price once u go through the checkout (VAT is removed for overseas (out-of-france) purchases).

**also, the 'complete works of mozart' set is much cheaper there (or at Amazon Germany), too. the 'complete works of bach' is due out later this year.

3 out of 5 stars You heard guy below: Beethoven needs the royality checks! .......2006-04-07

There is quality beyond the Austrian green cardboard (which is lovely to look at, to say the least). In fact, the performance of the symphonies (Dresden Staatskapelle and Herbert Blomstedt) is alone worth the price. The Staatskapelle is a solid group, and Blomstedt, although less wellknown, holds his own. It should be mentioned that Blomstedt recorded many of the most celebrated 20th composition CDs on the market, and definitely knows his stuff. Peter Wohlert recorded mostly for compiliation lables, but to be selected by the Berlin Phil shows that he is a formdiable conductor in rank as well.

Should you buy this collection then? Given the fact that each CD cost $1.75, there is definitely the bargin factor. However, Beethoven's music desveres the top interpreters and musicians of our time - and this applies for all of his music, not just the symphonic. If you are into bargins, then proceed to buy this collection. However, if you save up a bit more, you can buy Karajan's 1963 Beethovens symphonies along with Kempff's 1956 sonata cycles for just a bit more than 70 bucks. Shop around for the string quartets, and the complete overtures should range anywhere from 15 to 30 bucks depending on the conductor/ensemble.

Overall, this is certainly an exceptional bargin. However, quality matter more than money. Besides, chicks dig people with sophisticated tastes.

5 out of 5 stars Buy my box Set!.......2006-03-21

Awesome deal, 40 CD box set of me, Beethoven! There are 3 principle reasons you should buy this box set:

This box is QUALITY my friend, made of the finest, Austrian cardboard with a lovely green finish, it is made to last! You can just set it on your dresser and whenever you need a Beethoven fix you can just pull a CD out. But don't you hate getting your CDs out of order so you can't find what the hell you're looking for?! Not with this set! They are well organized into symphonies, concerti, sonatas and such, so you can find EXACTLY what your looking for, and they have big numbers on them so you can put them right back where they belong.

And the music! Need we go into this, composed through the inspiration of God himself and penned by the greatest composer who ever walked the streets of Vienna, me, Beethoven! Top notch, all done by top performers and recorded at high, clear, digital quality, stick one in your stereo and rock out man! All of my great and mighty works are here, absolutely sublime!

Lastly, you'll be supporting me, I need those royalty checks to keep rolling in!

Buy it if you love me or just buy it if you want people to think that you're sophisticated (the chicks also dig it, I should know: Antonie Brentano, giggity!), you can't go wrong!

Amazon.com essential recording

Bach, like Handel and most other baroque composers, often reused compositions, either adapting and assembling portions of them to make new "compilation" works (as with the four short Masses) or rearranging them for other forces (as with the violin concertos Bach rearranged as harpsichord concertos). Bach's three sonatas for viola da gamba and keyboard are just such rearrangements, all of trio sonatas for two melody instruments and continuo. This means that the keyboard isn't just harmonic accompaniment: It's a second melody instrument, an equal duet partner with the gamba. This can be difficult for a harpsichordist to pull off successfully, because the harpsichord can't sustain a note or vary its volume. (Bach didn't specify which keyboard instrument to use, however, and there are other interesting period instrument options possible.) Ton Koopman does his instrument proud, though--he's more famous now as a Bach conductor, but he came to prominence as a harpsichordist and organist, and his sparkling performance here shows why. Jordi Savall is probably the only viola da gamba player to have become famous beyond the small world of early-instrument aficionados. Granted, that's partly due to his conducting career, but no one can make this rather introverted instrument sing quite like Savall can. --Matthew Westphal

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars superb artistry and delicious tone.......2005-11-21

There is a large number of recordings of these pieces available today, but I would say this ranks as one of the finest, if not THE finest, available. Jordi Savall has a wonderful way of making the viola da gamba sound as well as it can all the time, and even in the most virtuosic passages of these pieces there isn't any "scratchy" playing like you will find in recordings by lesser gambists. Also present is the great sense of musicianship and sensitivity one would expect from Savall.

Ton Koopman is among the most famous harpsichordists and Baroque conductors in the world today, and he certainly does justice to the keyboard parts, which unlike most contemporary Baroque sonatas, are far more than mere accompaniment or continuo parts. Bach wrote a true trio texture here, and while I would wish that some of the harpsichord lines could come out more, others have written that the harpsichord is more present than in other recordings, so perhaps as a harpsichordist myself(and gambist) I am just being picky!

I own hundreds of dollars worth of Savall CDs and I would recommend this one just as heartily as the others. A great treat is the arrangement of the C major organ tio sonata for alto viol and harpsichord: perhaps the only "alto viola da gamba" sonata recording you can find. The now-rare instrument sounds beautiful and has a singing tone with lots of resonance in the lower range...a little like a viola but with a more transparent and clear tone.

5 out of 5 stars Not your grandmother's period performance.......2002-08-06

Delicious. Despite the remarkable artistry that has come into the historical performance world in the past several decades, we've had to wait for this to hear the first truly remarkable recording of the gamba sonatas (although the Bylsma/van Asperen experiment impresses too). These little gems are fantastic-- much larger in scope and depth than the humble (to those who have not heard it) instrumentation would suggest. And, Koopman and Savall have thrown in a reworking of the similarily structured C-major trio sonata for organ to the CD's tremendous advantage.

5 out of 5 stars The best period recording of these works available.......2002-04-03

This has to be considered the definitive recording of the Bach gamba sonatas. Savall and Koopman are arguably the finest gamba and harpsichord players, respectively, in the world. The balance is slightly more harpsichord-heavy than is typically heard, but it allows both hands of the keyboard a chance at equality. Rather than be a viol accompanied by two keyboard lines, this is three individual lines of music, and Koopman is skilled enough to make it work. Listen for a few painfully long resolutions on half-cadences at the end of slow movements. It's the nice kind of pain. The addition of an arrangement of an organ sonata as a sort of fourth viola da gamba sonata is a pleasant treat.

For those of you who don't know these works, this is essential listening. The three gamba sonatas are among the last great pieces written for the instrument, which subsequently went out of style until relatively recently.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2001-03-10

Savall and Koopman first recorded the three gamba sonatas over twenty years ago, so this new version was already up against stiff competition from the same pair of musicians. But what a revelation! While the two work together splendidly, the contrast between their approaches is what makes the collaboration so perfect. And, as one might expect, the added experience both have beind them make for a more relaxed, though hardly less engaging, performance. Savall's dynamic subtleties are matched by Koopman's strongly rhetorical approach and tighty controlled ornamentation. As an added bonus, one of the six trio sonatas (originally for organ) is added to fill out the disc. While there are plenty of recordings of these works in the catalogue, including excellent modern instrument performances by the likes of Kim Kashkashian on viola and many 'cellists, these should easily be THE performances to have, and not just for period-performance buffs.

Well, I must admit my review is a little bias since I am a classical guitar enthusiast and a huge Bach fan. Bream's playing of the lute suite in Em is beautiful. This cd can serve as a nice background score while dining with your girlfriend, or as a technical performance heard with your headphones on, eyes closed, and full attention given. If you love classical music and/or the sound of a clean acoustic guitar under the arm of someone who has mastered the art of the instrument, I highly recommend this!

5 out of 5 stars A delightful recording.......2004-12-21

The Bach Trio Sonatas are written for organ. This recording is a transcription of all 6 Trio Sonatas for various combinations of instruments including oboe, violin and organ. Listening to this CD is like discovering riches in this music I didn't know were there! If you like Bach organ music, try it. If you like Bach but not necessarily his organ music, try it! One of the most enjoyable CDs I've heard this past year.

5 out of 5 stars What a splendid CD this is.......2004-09-11

There are a number of recordings that take Bach's set of trio Sonatas for Organ (BWV 525- 530) and transcribe them for other instruments. Bach often did that himself, and with a variety of instrumental combinations. The structure of the pieces lend themselves well to multi-instrument groups; they may have been written as "practice pieces" for one of Bach students/sons, but they are not simple or straighforward; they are quite intricate and have a number of separate discernible parts. King's Consort use of Oboe, oboe d'amore and theorbe add extra color and dimension to these pieces. They're really beautiful, and beautifully played. Additionally, because it is likely Bach used contemporary italian sonatas as his model, they tend to be more roundly crafted and sunnier than some of Bach's other chamber works. The wind instruments highlight this disposition.

This is not a cheap CD (when is Hyperion going to get into the 21st century with their pricing?) but I was easily won over by the quality and beauty of the music making. The CD is 70 minutes long, which is nice as well. The King's Consort is a first class band; I also have their Vivaldi recording of concerti con molti strumenti which is dynamite.

5 out of 5 stars Exemplary chamber music makes for rapt listening.......2006-10-22

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714 - 1788), "Five Piano Trios" [this title is, in fact, rather misleading: the CD contains six works to which Bach himself gave the title of "Sonatas for Keyboard with the Accompaniment of a Violin and a Violincello"]. Performed by Trio 1790. [Harald Hoeren plays a copy of a fortepiano by Matthias Heilmann from around 1780; Matthias Fischer and Philipp Bosbach play period violin and cello respectively.] Recorded in June and July 1993 at the studios of Deutschlandfunk (German national radio). cpo 999 216-2.

Trio 1790's releases for the German specialist label cpo, in which they trace the development of the trio in the second half of the 18th century, have harvested a great deal of praise in the critical press, and this issue containing six (not five) sonatas by Bach's second son Carl Philipp Emanuel is exemplary in that both the performance and the engineering are of the highest standard. The program contains excerpts from three collections published in London and Leipzig in 1776 and 1777, at a time therefore when the harpsichord was gradually being replaced by the fortepiano, so that Harald Hoeren is probably right to choose the latter despite the fact that Bach himself left it up to the performers which of the two instruments they preferred to use. The term "trio" is definitely a misnomer here, because Bach himself pointed out that the pieces could be played as solos for a keyboard instrument without any great loss; the violin tends to follow the discant voice of the piano, while the cello fulfils the basso continuo function; there is thus little in the way of comparison to the later trios of, say, Schubert. Harald Hoeren's notes (which are quite brief by cpo's standards) point out certain parallels to similar works by Mozart, but as a listener what impressed me most was the individuality and expressivity of the pieces, which, while being relatively easy to listen to, have nothing of the smoothness of the "galant" style practised by Bach's younger brother Johann Christian. This is all "Empfindsamkeit", not perhaps quite as individualistic as some of Bach's even later orchestral works from his Hamburg period, but still written in a distinctively personal style. The polished playing and the superb recording make for almost 75 minutes of rapt listening.

5 out of 5 stars Finding the Empfindsamkeit.......2000-07-16

Trio 1790's performance of these works by C.P.E. Bach does full justice to the conception of the composer as a representative of "Empfindsamkeit," a stylistic trend in late 18th century German music which sought innovations in the expression of quicksilver emotions and moods. No stuffy drawing rooms here -- this is music to jolt you out of your Rococo rut once and for all. Expect the unexpected, that's the best advice. Expect to be touched when you least expect it by some snippet of melody that appears out of nowhere. The playing is absolutely top drawer, as it always is with Trio 1790. The music is gorgeous in C.P.E. Bach's endearingly quirky way. As I would say about all the other recordings of Trio 1790: you can't go wrong.
