Album Description
Buxtehude was a leading figure in the organ music of North Germany in the generation before Bach. His considerable influence extended to Bach himself and members of his circle, who copied and circulated his music. This third volume of organ music by one of the greatest composers for the instrument includes free preludes as well as preludes based on familiar Lutheran chorales, part of a repertoire that brought musical distinction to the city of Lübeck in the second half of the seventeenth century.

A Good Albinoni Disc (one of the few remaining) . . ........2002-02-14

The performances on this disc are fine. Since it's a compilation, it features a variety of performers (Maurice Andre, Xavier Darasse, Pierre Pierlot) and conductors (Jacques Rousell, Raymond Leppard, etc.). Although the majority of these recordings were made in the late 1960's and early 1970's, the sound quality is good. True, there are plenty of DDD discs out there offering Albinoni's 'Adagio,' and the sound quality on these discs is superior. But with the exception of the Philips (Op. 9) and Erato (Opus 9, 10) labels, this is the only disc avaiable (that I'm aware of) that offers the listener more than a mere taste of Albinoni's work.

So if you're a fan of Baroque music, I recommend that you give this disc a try. It's nicely priced, and worth the investment.

Best recording for your money!.......1998-10-13

Symphony No. 3 is quite the musical roller coaster, taking you from sweeping action pieces to tranquil serenity, topped with a powerful punching finale. The suite is, in my opinion, one of the most overlooked orchestral masterpieces.

Dukas' "Sorcerer" is a familiar tune for anyone who has seen Fantasia. The piece is very fitting to be in this collection of recordings.

Saint-Saëns Danse Macabre stirs images of the dead rising from their graves and partying the night away... well partying like it's 1845 anyway. Granted the piece was done in the early 20th century, but it has a firm Victorian flair.

The final piece from Samson and Delilah has an appropriate Egyptian air and is a great example of how the composer could create mood.

All the pieces by Saint-Saëns on this excellent collection can spark imagination and inspire the creative. I have owned this CD for quite a while and find it still to be superior to any other recording of the same pieces I have purchased. Saint-Saëns is by far my favorite composer, but that does not influence my opinion that Ormandy, Virgil Fox, and Arthur Fiedler have made this piece not only breathe but sing.

Trivia: Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3 Movement 4 was the foundation for the soundtrack of "Babe"(Universal Pictures)
