Baritone Peter Halverson’s tonal beauty and sense of the text were a constant pleasure.

Album Description
A longtime favorite of the opera and concert stage, baritone Peter Halverson has now recorded some of his favorite songs by American composers. Halverson, together with pianist David Worth, takes inspiration from great baritone singers of the past and draws from the rich and diverse American song repertoire to create an American Portrait. From Ethelbert Nevin's 1891 setting of Eugene Fields’ wistful "Little Boy Blue" to Marc Blitzstein's vaudevillian "Penny Candy" of 1945 to Gene Scheer's moving "Lean Away" of 1995 are heard over a century of songs that communicate with a beauty and simplicity that is immediate and heartfelt. Together these songs, old and new, favorites and forgotten, paint a landscape that is unmistakably American.

Baritone Peter Halverson has performed throughout the United States, distinguishing himself on the dramatic stage and in concert. A versatile performer, he has more than fifty roles to his credit including the title roles in Pelléas et Mélisande, Eugene Onegin, Don Giovanni, The Barber of Seville, Gianni Schicchi, The Man of La Mancha and Phantom. He has been a frequent guest artist with the Minnesota Opera, Minnesota Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, North Star Opera, and has appeared at the Kennedy Center Mozart Festival, Oregon Bach Festival and San Luis Osbispo Mozart Festival. In addition, he has sung with the Florentine Opera, Berkshire Opera, Madison Opera, Tacoma Opera, Chattanooga Opera, National Symphony, Dallas Symphony, San Antonio Symphony and New Mexico Symphony.

Highly regarded for his work in the roles of Mozart and Rossini, he has also received acclaim for work in contemporary opera including the title role in Einohuhani Rautavaara’s Aleksis Kivi, Thomas Jefferson in Glenn Paxton’s Monticello, Luther Dane in Chester Biscardi’s Tightrope, the Emperor in Robert Moran’s From the Towers of the Moon, Damis in Kirke Mechem’s Tartuffe, Charles Lindbergh in Carey Franklin’s Loss of Eden, and Leonard Bernstein’s Mass. He has also been featured in numerous operettas including The Desert Song, The Vagabond King, The Chocolate Soldier, The New Moon, The Great Waltz, The Song of Norway, The Merry Widow, Die Fledermaus, Bittersweet, The Red Mill, Kismet and Naughty Marietta.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Music Making!.......2006-11-03

This album is worth every cent. Peter Halverson and David Worth serve up a sumptuous feast of Americana. Halverson's golden and resonant voice is enveloped by Worth's sonorous and subtle pianism. Of particular note is their interpretation of Gene Scheer's poignant song "Lean Away." Tears still flow from this reviewer's eyes even after repeated listenings. The professional quality of recording itself captures a rich musical sympatico that clearly exists between these two artists. If ever there was proof that the repertory of American Parlor Songs deserve more serious attention from classical musicians this album presents it convincingly and with depth. This album deserves a wide circulation.
