Electro-Acoustic

Editorial Reviews
Option, Mar/Apr 1997
Kupper has been working in electronic music since the early 1960s, constructing instruments as well as experimental, pschoacoustic spatial soundworks.

Improvijazzation Nation, #27
This CD is pure aural pleasure. Grand, enveloping, deep, exploratory. It is most highly recommended for the serious listener.

Album Description
Leo Kupper was born in Belgium in 1935. He worked with Henri Pousseur at the first electronic music studio in Belgium and is founder and director of the Studio de Recherches et de Structurations Electroniques Auditives in Brussels. The works on Electro-Acoustic are Electro-Acoustic Santur (1989), for 2 santurs, 4 micro-processors and electronic sounds. Guitarra Cubana (1988) is presented in the form of 3 sequences. The first two sequences combine guitar sounds and phonetic sounds, the last one uses only guitar sounds. Inflexions Vocales (1982) with Françoise Vanhecke (soprano) is a vocal composition for soprano with accompaniment by a stereo tape. The final work is Le Reveur au Sourire Passager (1977) with Jean-Claude Frison (reciter). La composition, à travers le poème, décrit un monde obscur, profond, incompréhensible et mystérieux.

Album Description

Music touches our hearts and resonates within our bodies. The right music can truly renew us, helping us to feel relaxed and rejuvenated. Great musicians have always recognized this therapeutic power of music, and researchers are finally proving them right. THE SOUND MEDICINE SERIES features the works of inspired musical pioneers who are exploring music's healing power.

Natural Balance and Harmony Your body is a self-healing instrument. If you give it a chance it will always tend toward homeostasis or healthful balance. Sound healer Steven Halpern uses soothing and free-floating keyboard compositions to draw the body into this state of balance and harmony. Combining artistic inspiration, sensitivity, and sophisticated sound technology, his compositions synchronize the hemispheres of the brain and amplify the production of alpha waves. This natural response is associated with feelings of deep relaxation, contentment, and well-being.

Steven Halpern, Ph.D. stands at the leading edge of the growing public understanding of the relationship between music, body, mind and spirit. An internationally acclaimed composer and recording artist Halpern has produced over sixty recordings and authored several books. His music has been featured on 48 Hours, America's Talking, and in USA Today, The New York Times and Yoga Journal. Halpern's recordings are used in hospitals, healing clinics, and leading spas worldwide.

Music for Healing Mind, Body & Spirit was previously released under the title In the Key of Healing

Good sleeping Music. Very calming for the mind. It would go nice with a cup of tea.

This CD was a nice experience. It did seem a little repetative but, all in all, it was good.

5 out of 5 stars Great meditation CD.......2007-03-12

This is my new "go-to" CD for meditation. I'm a fan of vibrational music for meditation, but sometimes the vibrational CD's can get repetitive and boring. This CD has multiple tracks with variety in the music, but with calming vibrationals in the background. Good for meditation, guided imagery, yoga, or great background music for reading.

5 out of 5 stars Sound Medicine: Music for Healing.......2007-01-04

Following a suggestion from Candace B. Pert, Ph.D. found in her book "Molecules of Emotion," I decided to look for a relaxation CD to help me fall asleep. Because I also suffer from migraines, the word "healing" in the title of this CD intrigued me. It's still hard to believe, but for the past three months it puts me to sleep so quickly that I've never heard the end of the CD! And if I should wake up in the middle of the night I just turn it on again and fall right back asleep. Amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Kids songs.......2007-07-03

I gave this cd to my grand daughter, because she loves music. Knew very little about it until I received sincere thanks from my daughter and son inlaw for a great CD

5 out of 5 stars 2 year old's favorite.......2007-06-13

I feel sorry for the child's mother who won't listen to this CD because she doesn't like it.
I took the vow of motherhood before getting pregnant....I will watch Oobie & enjoy it....I will play in mud puddles & enjoy it....you get the idea
Is this CD a replacement for my adult music? Ugh, no.
Does my 2 yr old son say "school bus song!!" excitedly every time we head for the car? Yes.....
My kids LOVE this CD. They relate to the silly, (& as complained about) sometimes off key singing. They also love the true toddler voices that are mushy sounding just like their own newly developing vocabulary.
My son listens so intently that he could recite all the songs in the first week. Adorable.

4 out of 5 stars Has all the good songs.......2007-05-30

If you're looking for a best of toddler faves, this is the best I can find. Even though the singing leaves a lot to be desired (sounds like an old granny singing the lyrics, albeit a vibrant one). Most of time, true to the original compositions and some well-known rhymes included. We are pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely songs.......2007-05-22

My grandchildren love these songs and I can't help but sing along. They are great for long road trips.

1 out of 5 stars UGH! I can't stand it!!.......2007-05-17

I was looking for a cd of children's songs to play for my son. He likes to sing along to familiar favorites. This one is so annoying, I put it in the garage sale pile right away. The voices are irritating, the music is irritating, and it is mixed so kid's can't sing along if they are familiar with the original versions.

I was just looking for a plain, cd with the original classic versions of the children's songs--no "cutesy" mixes or "updates". It is proving hard to find.

5 out of 5 stars My toddler loves it!.......2007-05-05

This 4-disc set contains tons of wonderful sing-a-long favorites that entertain my 2-year old. I even loaned it to her daycare class to enjoy, and all the other kids loved it too. These are all great versions and not bad for mommy to listen to either. What a value to get 101 songs for such a low price.

1 out of 5 stars Just awful.......2007-04-28

I did not in my wildest imagination expect anything like this. The songs are performed by 3 or 4 year olds with poor diction and pronunciation who do not appear to even pretend to like what they are singing. I listened to several songs at random trying to figure out what on earth they are saying. To no avail. It is impossible to sing along. Songs performed by adults are not any better. I don't know where the recording studio found these people but they do not seem to be professional performers. The music is somewhat unorthodox in terms of being revamped or remixed to what came out to be a totally boring arrangement with no rhyme or beat to it.

This was a complete waste of money. Those who rate this product as good or excellent may not have heard anything better in their lifetimes. How sad.

4 out of 5 stars good songs.......2007-04-16

i bought this CD for my son. Some of songs are sung at his preschool.
He sings them listening to this CD.

2 out of 5 stars Not upbeat or child-like enough.......2007-03-31

Songs do not emit a jump up and go response from my children. The arrangements are really boring.

Excellent music to let your mind and worries wonder. I think it's his best. Great for meditation, relaxing, and just focusing on the core joy of being.

5 out of 5 stars Chakra Suite.......2007-01-17

This cd of chimes and bells is an instant avenue to relaxation and meditation. It calms, soothes and balances our chakras. I've used it for myself to meditate and realign my energies; on my staff to calm them on a hectic night at work and over the loudspeaker for the patients to hear when they got up in the morning. It is healing music.

5 out of 5 stars Suprising.......2007-06-15

After purchasing many compilations I began to fear that I would never again hear a cd as good as my first (Siddharta Vol. 1) but this cd woke me up. Some songs are better than others. "Siempre Me Quedará" for example is one of the best songs I've heard in months and all are consistantly good except for one song called "Carmela" which sounds like something my grandparents would dance to.
When I realised that Putumayo made many discs with many different themes without sticking to 1 theme I assumed it would be commercial and weak, but the disc outdoes most buddha bar or hotel costes compilations!
A great Listen, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Speak Spanish or Not, This CD is Great.......2007-04-10

I am a Spanish student and am nearly fluent. It's fun to listen to this CD and know what they're saying, but even if you can't speak a word of Spanish, this CD will retain a special place on your shelf (or a permanent place in your CD player). The music varies from tangoes to salsas to mambos. I especially enjoy listening to this CD in my car because... it's just plain fun to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth and Sexie.......2007-03-13

All the cuts offer a tasty bite of Latin flavor. Latin Jazz and Euro fusion. Great listening music or as a back drop to accent a dinner party. The music is captivating, enchanting, and just a pleasure to listen. This is the kind of music that goes great with a sunset, wine, and a friend.

5 out of 5 stars Learn Spanish and groove at the same time: Latin Lounge.......2007-01-04

I just bought this CD at the airport in San Jose, Costa Rica. It was playing over the loudspeaker in the gift shop and I was hooked. Happy to help the local economy but I could have saved some $ if I had bought it on amazon. This is an amazing CD. Not only is the music great, but you can also improve your Spanish by listening to the lyrics. If you like groovy Latin music, buy this now.

5 out of 5 stars Putumayo.......2006-12-15

PUTUMAYO is awesome music, a real eye opener. Similar in many ways to the BUDDHA BAR approach but different flavour.

Anyone who enjoys this cd may want to try MANU CHAO (proxima estacion ... ESPERANZA) for another trully great Latin American music.

This is definitely one of the easiest CD's to pop in, along with Nuevo Latino .... anytime anywhere ... just makes you enjoy the moment so much more.

One of the fundamental criticisms of New Age music is that it puts people to sleep. Here, Steven Halpern, one of the founding fathers of New Age, makes that his mission and, as you might expect, does an effective job of it. Drawing on catalog material from the early 1980s, Halpern builds an attractive collection of delicate, lighter-than-air sonic textures that nicely serves the intended purpose--to fill the silence with something prettier than white noise. Halpern does so by blending electric and acoustic piano, plus additional keyboards, to create soothing, improvisational, cloudlike musical abstractions that often convey the tranquil randomness of wind chimes in a soft breeze. The liner notes also promise your subconscious will be exposed to a series of subliminal, sleep-encouraging affirmations along the quiet, unstructured way. This may sound like so much frou-frou to the unconverted, but for anyone sincerely interested in a sleep aid, Halpern's disc is a certified snoozer, a New Age music box. Other New Age discs may accomplish the same purpose as Sleep Soundly, but few will do it as persuasively. --Terry Wood

3 out of 5 stars not sleepy enough.......2007-03-02

Too repetative, made me want to speed up the Brahams lullaby. Just made me agitated. However my 8 yr. old daught listens to it many nights a bedtime and loves it. I like his Chakra CD much better and find it more relaxing.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD For Falling Asleep.......2007-02-09

We have purchased several CDs to help us sleep, but this one is by far the best. My husband and I was able to fall asleep pretty much before the first track is finished or at most the beginning of the second track. I don't think I can even recall what the third track sounds like... It plays Brahms Lullaby in several versions (trio, duet, solo) along with some other songs, but it does it in a way that is very soothing.
I have strongly recommended the CD to other family members and my collegues.

5 out of 5 stars ZZzzzzz is right!.......2007-01-13

During the first 5 minutes I told myself this is rediculous how is this going to get me to sleep?

Well after another 5 minutes I checked out and went straight to dreamland.
I woke up refreshed and full of energy. I always suffered from not being able to fall asleep, worrying about little things. The cd is great, I can't hear my own thoughts.
I'm a dj and since using this cd my ears are no longer tired and I can mix my music properly. Love it

We have had trouble with our 2 year old staying in bed. She seems to think night time is a good time to bounce off the walls :) We started playing this CD and within 2 nights she was sleeping soundly without trouble. She shares a room with her 4 year-old sister who loves the CD as well. She will ask to have it played every night. It is very soothing background music.

1 out of 5 stars Didn't sleep soundly.............2007-01-12

I found this cd very UNrelaxing, didn't lull me to sleep as promised. Very dissappointed and would not recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-06-05

I can't say enough about this CD. It is great to meditate to. If you just want to take a 20 minute vacation, it is possible with the help of Steven Halpern's music and sounds then Emmett Miller's soothing voice on this CD. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The best I've ever encountered.......2006-07-01

This CD is the best I've ever encountered as far as relaxation CD's go. The first time I listened to Autogenic Stress Relief I was scared of feeling relaxed (because I don't know how to relax). The second time I was used to the process and it was wonderful. I can't brag on this CD enough. I can concentrate, I can focus, and I don't worry about things as much.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Guided Imagery and Music.......2006-06-25

Emmitt Miller leads you thru four different relaxation sessions, each about 20 min. in length. His voice is very soothing and the background music is perfectly in tune with the guided imagery. The music is performed by Steven Halpern. I agree with the previous reviewer that the trip to the beach is the best one on the CD, but the others area very good too. You can use in the middle of the day or before going to sleep to aid in relaxation. Very much worth the money for this CD.

Please see my other reviews on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Relaxation.......2005-02-27

Dear Friends,
I have been enjoying the use of this tape for many years. It has four separate 20 minute relaxation sessions on it. Some have muscle tension progressive relaxation exercises, which are fantastic. But my favorite session is "A Trip to The Beach." It is a guided imagery session that relaxes you, takes you on a trip to the beach, and guides you in seeing your body as healthy and strong. You can use this tape for an afternoon relaxation session, or you can use it as you go to sleep at night. Even though it will bring you "up" at the end, I have never had a problem just sleeping soundly through it when it is bedtime. I've used this tape when going through severe health challenges and stressful situations. My husband also enjoys listening to it at night. I highly recommend it.

Steven Halpern has more than 60 recordings in circulation, including audio projects ostensibly designed to enhance memory, wealth, and weight loss. He even has his own trademarked slogan--the Halpern Effect(tm)! (Take that, Mozart.) Thus, it's easy to view Halpern's high-volume output since 1975 less as art and more like a commodity. Gifts of the Angels, a 68-minute compilation (sampling eight albums and adding two original pieces), offers a few nuggets that suggest Halpern's music at times can stand on its own merits, detached from all of its deep-bliss, New Age pretensions. "Celestial Prophecy," is a nicely detailed (which is not to say complex) excursion on solo piano that briefly stirs the senses, and the title track from Higher Ground is a delicate space-music standout. Meanwhile, the 1970s-flashback tonality of Halpern's electric piano (one piece, "Earthrise," can be traced to Halpern's debut release, Spectrum Suite) dates several of the tracks included here. Nevertheless, the disc's pace, which drifts deeper into the ether on each of the last five tracks, is nicely constructed for those aiming to nod off into a state of contented nothingness. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars I have used this CD for TEN YEARS..........2006-12-23

As a massage therapist, this is the ONLY CD I have used consistently in my practice over the past TEN years. There is something about this particular CD that I absolutely love and that has not been duplicated in other CDs I have used (literally hundreds!) Steven Halpern comes up with awesome music! I have many of his other CDs as well, but NOTHING comes close to "Gifts of the Angels". I am now using my 3rd copy and will buy another when this one is worn out. Many of my clients ASK me to use it in their massage sessions and ask me where to find Halpern's music. Superb.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to the warm embrace of angels!.......2006-08-31

When much of modern day's rock music and the civilization's pressure on people's lifestyle has a stressful and bad influence on the well being Steven Halpern's music is a blessing. The Godfather and inventor of the New Age music that has a healing and relaxing purpose makes music that puts the body in it's own rhythm and leads into a state of balance and inner peace. Gifts of Angels does all this, but adds an extra dimension with its beautiful angel song, making this an absolute world class New Age album. The music puts the brain waves in an alpha state and sometimes my heartbeat even gets down to 40 beats per minute, leading to a sense of peace and relaxation at the same time as its get me ready to meet my everyday life as a more balanced and happier human being. To have the opportunity to lie down and do nothing, just listen to this beautiful music, and let it fill your entire body with peace and comfort is a luxury that I think every human being should have the opportunity to do and that everybody needs to do once in a while. Unfortunately many people don't have the knowledge about New Age and the way it helps us to a better life. Bands like Rush, Journey and Def Leppard gives us the rush and entertainment that we need to be energetic while going to the gym or driving the car fast on a sunny summer day. Steven Halpern's music gets the body in a state of balance and peace and helps us to get more concentrated and focused. The price of this CD is not just the price of another CD, it's an investment in a better life, like buying a miracle pill that gets you healthier and helps you get away from illness and an unhealthy life, a pill that never will end.

The music is just that! It sounds like you're in Heaven. Halpern scores again!

5 out of 5 stars This is truly music from the angels.......2006-03-24

I listen to this CD when I am meditating and while I am taking a bath. It allows me to relax and truly be in a state of heaven. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars life saving music.......2006-03-07

I did not expect this but I was really buying this for myself, turns out my daughter likes this at night so she can fall asleep. My daughter is 4 and very active, she never seems to know when to rest and relax.
I decided to play this one night just to ease the mood of the night and she was asleep by the 4th song. We play this cd every night. thank!, you thank!, you thank you!

I love this cd because now I can have her go to sleep at a time that is normal for her age instead of an adult time.

Thanks, I recommend this cd for every one that is tense and needs a good easy winding down. I love it

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding CD.......2007-06-05

I can't say enough about this CD. It is great to meditate to. If you just want to take a 20 minute nap, it is possible with the help of Steven Halpern's music and sounds on this CD. I have it uploaded to my iPod and on a difficult migraine night I just pop the ear peices in and go to sleep listening to this over and over again on shuffle. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Effortless Relaxation.......2007-03-11

This is a very relaxing CD. My husband and I play it while we are working outside or relaxing in the lanai and it fits perfectly with the nature sounds around us (birds). We also use it for background music when friends are over. Everyone enjoys it and wants to know what it is. It would be a great tape to play in the quiet of the evening to fall asleep to, or to play in a guests room for a relaxing ambiance. It is very well spent money. Thank you, Steven

2 out of 5 stars Not very impressed.......2007-02-14

I got this CD with the hope it would help me relax while I meditate. I didn't care for it. Not my kind of music.

5 out of 5 stars Relaxation!.......2006-11-03

I really enjoy every Cd from Steven Halpern, but this one is really my favorite. It always helps me relax and I use it a lot to drift off into a restfull sleep. I put my MP3 on shuffle because I always fell asleep and never remembered hearing the end of the CD. I would highly recommend this for relaxation. It really melts away the stresses of the day.

5 out of 5 stars Unique, the Best I've Heard.......2002-09-08

Dr. Halpern's talents shine on this CD. I had many relaxation CD's, but after hearing this one, I threw away all but this one. Everyone needs relaxation for good health. This CD is the best of the best!

5 out of 5 stars And the incline of the supine.......2007-07-06

After the post-millennial brick that was "The tired sounds of...", I was afraid that I had heard the last of SoTL. With the guys off in different days (Belgium vs LA), the effort needed to pull together and create anything, let alone something to match their previous best (not to bash Avec Laudinum, Ballasted or the others)would have to be signifigant. But with Refinement they have surpassed all my expectations.

This is the finest record to come out of 2007.

From the Bartok-esque opening strains of Dungtitled (in A Major), to the final mews of December Hunting for Vegitarian F*ckface, there isn't a point where my attention wanes or my emotions fail to be stirred. This is music that is at the same time cosmic and microscopic. It is the mechanical dreams of Pioneer 10 as it slumbers its way to infinity. It is the opera of hydrogen atoms. It is the songs of the empty spaces in the ocean, and the sound of dust motes in a beam of light as you sleep on a saturday afternoon with your dog.

With most of the 'ambient' music that is out there (Eno, Koner, Twin's SAW II, etc), it pays to let it enter the background and occasionally pop up to your attention. With SoTL's newest, I stand-sit-sprawl before my speakers in awe, with wonder at the music = no less than the bombasts of Sigur Ros or GSYBE at their finest moments. Do not buy this for sleeping. Buy this for awakening.

5 out of 5 stars Aural Dali.......2007-06-05

Hmmm...what's this?.. Stars of the Lid, never heard of them, wonder what they sound like, put the Cd into the autoloader, settle into the armchair, push play, 70 seconds into the first CD thinking 'what a piece of cra..' attempting to push stop on the remote...too late....Woofers have kicked in, body paralysed, unable to move, going down in an Elevator to visit Dali and Philip K Dick, driftspace in a foglit landscape - time moves like treacle, Chickens in Bermuda shorts cry out woefully 'J'taime...J'taime'.... I try desperately to claw my way back to the surface from this auditory Oublette, but to no avail...before I realise it the second CD has come to an end... all Music stops, all memory erased. I gaze at the empty CD case in my lap, thinking 'Hmmm. Stars of the Lid...never heard of them...wonder what they sound like....push play...'

If you're lucky your Mom or Dad will break down the door to your bedroom after 36 hours of continuous play and switch off the power to your Stereo...

Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars Everything in One Place.......2007-05-11

I've just finished listening to this double CD (121 minutes). I must say that it took me to many places and reminded me of so many other wonderful artists. It opens like Koyaanisqatsi, and ends like an Indian raga. Between these bookends it sounds like shimmering Harold Budd and Brian Eno. Warm passages soothe the soul. Dark corners keep you alert. Various instruments fade in and out. This is my first excursion into Stars of the Lid and I'd bet it's the best place to start. Put it on, turn it up, and relax for 2 hours. Very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Drone-based ambient at its best.......2007-04-25

I first became acquainted with Stars of the Lid through the work of their members on their own: Brian McBride and Adam Wiltzie (one of the members of The Dead Texan). I instantly fell in love with both, with their endless musical soundscapes that transport you much like the greatest works of ambient, so I figured Stars of the Lid wouldn't be too far from it.

While I can say their music is not for everybody, I found myself quickly devouring the entire discography by the duo. Their work is loaded with sheets of sound that overlay each other in an almost endless fashion. It's drone-based ambient at its best, without any rush or hush to help you sleep like a baby or take you by the hand through your meditation.

5 out of 5 stars Another massive and stunning slab of ambience.......2007-04-16

The Tired Sounds Of came out nearly five and a half years ago and in the time since then has become one of my most trusted ambient releases. Sure, I love my Brian Eno and my more modern work by Deathprod and others, but there's something about the sounds that the duo of Stars Of The Lid put together on that release that call me back time after time. Of course, since that release came out, both members of the group have released solid solo albums (Adam Wiltzie's The Dead Texan and Brian McBride's When The Detail Lost It's Freedom), but neither of those releases seemed to quite match the power of the two when they were working together under that somnolent pseudonym.

And so And Their Refinement Of The Decline is not only a big release because it's their first in so many years, but also because it marks the ten year period of the two musicians working together, as well as the hundredth release on the venerable Kranky label. It's another sprawling 2CD, 3LP release from the group, clocking in at over two hours in length and it's quite possibly even more massive sounding and moving than their previous album.

That's saying a lot, and while it's not quite as immediately melodic as either of the solo albums from each member of the group, it's yet another album from Stars Of The Lid that simply seeps down around you and absorbs into your being. "Dungtitled (In A Major)" opens the release with a wheeze of filtered horns, then dissolves immediately into one of their familiar, yet somehow still highly moving widescreen panoramas of blurring strings, with a horn melody that creeps back in and tiptoes the line between mournful and triumphant. The two-part "Articulate Silences" is some of the most gorgeous stuff the two have ever done, letting breathy chords decay into silence before pushing into the foreground again, with the latter making subtle movements that weaken the knees.

When it was announced that Stars Of The Lid had another album coming out, I have to admit that it immediately shot to near the top of my list in terms of anticipated releases, but this eighteen song set still feels overwhelming (in a good way) at times. On the playfully-titled (one of several) "Don't Bother They're Here," huge waves of filtered drones pulse for over ten minutes while some underlying melodic elements play out slightly more actively, creating a nice juxtaposition of sound. Elsewhere, the ten-minute plus "The Daughters Of Quiet Minds" again feels familiar as a soft scarf or pair of gloves, but again shifts and breathes with just enough of a new edge that it's refreshing.

Yes, there are thousands of artists creating ambient music, and some of them probably have even nudged up slightly against the work that Stars Of The Lid create, but somehow this duo have managed to carve out another solid batch of songs that simply sound unlike anyone else doing this sort of thing. There are hints of modern classical, drone, and sheer textures that you won't find anywhere else, and when played on headphones (or nice speakers) And Their Refinement Of The Decline is literally a moving experience. Call it music for lucid dreaming, call it music for daydreams, or call it music for simply strolling in the dusk, this is another album that will stretch time and take you to another place.
