Another Testament to Great Reissues.......2004-02-03
In this era of homogenized classical collections, it is great to see Testament rescue gems from the vaults of labels like EMI and reissue them on CD. This title presents the great Russian violin virtuoso David Oistrakh performing Lalo's "Symphonie Espagnole" and Prokofiev's 1st Violin Concerto, both recordings in mono from 1954. The disc ends with Oistrakh and pianist Vladimir Yampolsky performing four encores (Debussy, Falla, Tchaikovsky and Zarzycki) in stereo from 1956. I love Oistrakh for sure, but my main reason for purchasing this CD from Amazon was the fact that Jean Martinon (Lalo) and Lovro von Matacic (Prokofiev) were conducting. While both were frequently in the EMI studios in the 1950s, few of those recordings are currently available (though Testament has multiple titles for both artists slated for 2004). In fact, many of the early Testaments (like this title) are becoming equally elusive ("special order" often seems a code word for out-of-print these days), so those wishing to buy this CD should do so quickly.

Shortly before moving to the United States, the great violinist David Oistrakh gave some performances in Europe and made these recordings in Paris. They were the first ones issued in the U.S. that gave a fair idea of how he sounded, and they caught him in top form. This is simply some of the greatest violin playing ever recorded, including some of the most musically convincing performances of such major works as Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata and the Franck Violin Sonata. The 1953-54 sound is excellent hi-fi mono. And don't miss the Ysaÿe Sonata for Unaccompanied Violin, a stunningly impassioned performance. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Prokofiev is the star.......2006-12-19
The Prokofiev sonata is perfect, alive and passionate. But even better in its own way is the suite from Cinderella. In these short pieces Oistrakh really shows his mastery, dancing with no less grace than a member of the Kirov.
Without Peer.......2001-06-04
I have little to add, except to say that the reason David Oistrakh stands as perhaps the greatest violinist of the century, so well illustrated in this recording, is that unlike such magicians as Heifetz, he never allowed the violin to become the end. Rather, he mastered it utterly toward the single purpose of making great music to sing, and not only to sing, but to sing in all of its parts, be it violin, viola, piano, cello, clarinet, or orchestra in the mix.
His recording of the Prokoviev Sonata No. 1 in F Minor, among the others on this disk, stands as an archetype in this regard. For a more recent stereo version, his recording with Frida Bauer at the keyboard on Praga Productions (Harmonia Mundi s. a.) PR 250 041 (also available from Amazon), presents an almost identical performance in live concert, not quite as precise, but with the fuller sound of superior reproduction. Between these two available recordings we get a sense of the arguably greatest recording of this piece ever made, issued in the 1960s on RCA Victor Red Seal (LM-1987), but never reissued on CD (would it were so). This neglected RCA recording of Oistrakh with Vladimir Yampolsky at the keyboard had both the impeccable precision of the present recording and the full sound of the Praga recording, a perfect intersection of talent and timing.
I urge you to get both of the available Oistrakh recordings of this piece and compare them to any more recent performance by, say, Mintz or Repin, and you will understand why I might pine for that RCA recording seemingly lost to fate.
Oistrakh.......1999-03-27
These performances are Oistrakh at the hight of his facility and technical command. His playing is so solid and strong. His intonation is perfect, and the ensemble playing, especially with his favorite accompinist, Lev Oberin, is intimately together. His Kruetzer sonata with Oberin is the best recording I have ever heard out of Heifitz, Milstein and Szerying. These recordings are essential for the violin lover. He is truly one of the greatest violinists of the century.
