Editorial Reviews This compact disc, the first in a series of recordings to document the complete catalogue of songs by Ponce, is one of the most important enterprises that Encarnacion Vazquez has undertaken in her career. This first volume explores a particular worry in the composer's work: the ability to express a Mexican idiosyncrasy and the process to convey it into popular songs, concert music: ballads, rhapsodies, preludes, symphonic poems. Among the many anecdotes about Ponce`s songs it is worth mentioning one concerning his most famous: "Estrellita" ("Little Star": track 9), which took the author's name around the world. Due to a negligence of the author and the publishers, the song was not registered in his name and he never got a penny back form the "Naughty Estrellita", as he used to call it; fame arrived, but not fortune. In spite of the extraordinary lyrical gifts of Ponce and even the extraordinary poetic texture of most of his other original songs with refined, elaborated and complex music, these have remained practically unknown until the appearance of this disc, beautifully interpreted by two artists of international size: the mezzo-soprano Encarnacion Vazquez and the pianist Joseph Olechowski.
