Murray Perahia has recorded all of the Mozart piano concertos, and his effortlessly brilliant accounts can be recommended across the board. The playing is on the highest level--vibrant, unfailingly beautiful, wonderfully acute in its grasp of style and expression. Equally outstanding is the work of the English Chamber Orchestra, which Perahia leads from the keyboard. The recorded sound, while not as radiant as the music-making, is consistently good and well balanced from disc to disc. --Ted Libbey

5 out of 5 stars Very fine music and an outstanding performance........2005-07-13

The one negative review of this recording is misleading indeed. Although I am not the great conductor that this prior reviewer must be, I had to write this short comment to simply offset what I thought was an unfairly critical review. The performance quality of this cd is of the top notch variety, as much of Perahia's work proves to be. The recording quality, though not up to today's standards, is nevertheless very good and in no way hinders pianistic impression. The key significance of this recording, and the measure by which it should be judged, is how it has held up as the most popular and critically acclaimed recording of these two concertos for the decades since it was recorded. Recommended with enthusiasm by a serious music lover and nearly obsessive Mozart fan.

5 out of 5 stars One of Mozart's greatest concertos and a sublime performance.......2001-09-12

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote more than 20 piano concertos and every one has at least one great movement. In the 17th, all three are great. As in his greatest symphonies and opera overtures, the music is full of great themes and ideas and the transitions between them are seamless. The first movement has melody, drama and surprise modulations, all showing the mastery Mozart had of his craft. The middle movement is sweet pathos as only Mozart can deliver. It's the last movement that puts the game right in the middle of the most charming opera buffa style. I can not listen to this movement without smiling and feeling the wonderful helpings of playful joy. This concerto is not one of the more highly touted, like the 9th, and every one from the 19th to the 25th. Yet Mozart was squarely into his mature period as a composer and was still the toast of Vienna when this concerto was first performed.
Murray Perahia is one of the very few who have total command of the piano. He is also the consummate artist, never showy or self conscious. One of his greatest atributes is his ability to let the music speak in a most profound manner, tempos always right on and orchestra direction at its most colorful.
Of all the Mozart concertos, the 17th is one of my absolute favorites and I never tire of all the invention, fun, and all that great heavenly music. The 18th is harder to approach, not being as memorable melodically. The idioms are all there, and the logic is inscrutable, but it isn't at the same level of inspiration as the great concertos mentioned earlier. Nevertheless, Mozart never wrote any bad music and Perahia never fails to bring out the essential musicality of the score. This is a first class disc all the way even though it was originally recorded before today's more perfect digital environment. The only question for me is if this would be one of my 10 "desert island" discs. I do know it would be in my top 25 and should be in every Mozart lover's collection.

4 out of 5 stars What was Wolfgang doing at Indianapolis?.......2006-10-08

Answer: about 200 mph, in the third movement of the D minor. At 6:52, Goode may have set a record for this track: he shaves almost a minute off Curzon's time, and beats even Bilson by over half a minute. The slow movement likewise is the fastest I know of, which costs it some of its depth, and sounds almost as staccato as if it were played on a pianoforte.
But if your fondness for lively Mozart extends to allowing an allegro assai to be played quasi prestissimo, you're going to love this disc. The D minor is energized not only by fast tempi but by pointed accents and impassioned playing. The unusually detailed CD notes explain that the D minor was composed around the time Mozart wrote Don Giovanni; evidently an opera buffa style was emulated here. Despite the fast pace, the players stay on top of the music, with a great deal of nuance and only a few, very slight lapses of precision (it is the clarity of this recording that tattles on them). Goode uses Beethoven's cadenza in the first movement; in the finale, he offers a terse, refreshing and brilliant cadenza of his own (none of the wallowing in the spotlight that characterizes too many self-composed cadenzas).
The Concerto #18 receives a less notable performance, straightforward and polished.

5 out of 5 stars great modern interpretation.......2001-09-23

a wonderful performance. goode is excellent, especially on no. 20. the playing is strong, perhaps too strong for those who like the romantic approach.

    3 out of 5 stars GUESS WHO.......2004-05-22

It was notoriously difficult to lure Michelangeli either on to the concert platform or into the recording studio. In the vinyl era those anxious to collect anything they could of the work of this phenomenon of the modern keyboard made do largely with discs of questionable origins, some of which sounded as if they had been recorded down the telephone but others of which were surprisingly good. The cd era is just a little better, and the Michelangeli-collector waits like patience on her monument to see what may turn up. I had not long ago acquired a version of Mozart's K488 by M with Giulini from 1951 and reconciled myself to the abysmal recorded quality, and now here is another version that is far better.

These two Mozart performances date from 1953. The recorded sound is not brilliant but it is quite adequate. More to the point, this is the best Mozart-playing that I have ever heard from this soloist, not in general my own idea of a natural Mozart stylist. He recorded K415 again in 1989 with the North German Orchestra under Cord Garben. It's good, and of course it's Michelangeli, but not as good as this one. M scales down his enormous touch very well indeed, but the real surprise is how spontaneous and natural he managed to sound in 1953. The 1989 account is full of artful and `expressive' little rhythmic inflexions, the 1953 one does without them and how much better it is for that. I don't know who the Orchestra Alessandro Scarlatti were or are, but they are not an oversized band. They are here again in K488 with the same conductor, and the performance has the same characteristics of naturalness and comparative openness, just slightly reminiscent of Solomon's famous recording from much the same time. M's tempi are a little slower, but there is a similar `soft-focus' quality to the touch that each deploys and a similar feeling of introversion.

When it comes to the Haydn I am simply speechless, so much so that I have to borrow the celebrated catch-phrase of HRH the Prince of Wales - `it really is appalling'. I know this performance of old because I have owned it since it was first issued on LP. M must have had some clear idea of what he thought he was about, but what it might have been is beyond me. The whole scale of the presentation is ludicrously overblown and out of proportion, and M's loud, plonking, uninflected and graceless left-hand chords at his first entry are only the worst example of a total lack of sensitivity that would have had me switching the thing off if the soloist had been anybody else. I can't suppose that it was a deliberate attempt at parody, but I haven't got a better explanation either.

It just so happens that the other pianist whose work I collect systematically is Rudolf Serkin, and it also so happens that his performance of K488 from 1955 has just been reissued too on the Sony label. I would not want to be without Michelangeli, but Serkin's Mozart at its best was of another interpretative order entirely. He has individuality in abundance, but everything is to scale, the crystalline touch is simply wonderful, and Serkin's sublime rhythmic instinct is something that Michelangeli never came near. This set is a very mixed bag indeed. I wouldn't part with it, and I wouldn't even go so far as to say that it can only be recommended to collectors. The Haydn has curiosity value and nothing else. As for the two Mozart readings, I would have liked them even if I hadn't known who was playing, and it could well be that they have general appeal.

      5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2001-01-05

This is an absolutely phenomenal new recording of two Mozart piano concertos, two of my faves, 18 and 19, by Andreas Staier, who was Goebel's keyboard player in the mid 80s, and sounds it. He's playing a magnificent reproduction of a Walter piano, the same that Mozart would have played. He plays with the period band Concerto Koln, some of whose members played with MAK over the years. The recording is peerless: dynamic, transparent, detailed; the interpretation simply beyond praise. Pointed, subtle, every phrase beautifully considered, perfect ensemble and intonation, gorgous timbres, intensely virtuosic throughout (the tempo for the F-major concerto finale is blistering, fastest I've ever heard, and works beautifully, not forced at all; Staier has been a major talent for years, but this proves it beyond any doubt whatsoever) I've heard a lot of good Mozart piano playing in the last 10 years especially...I didn't think it could actually be done BETTER by this point...but it can, and is, by these guys. Freaking incredible. You have to hear it sometime. To my ears, based on my readings, this may be as close as anyone has come yet to what it all sounded like to Mozart himself, only better, since he didn't usually have the kind of preparation time these guys must have had. Just fantastic. Let's hope we get all the concertos from these guys. It'll be hard for anybody to match, let alone exceed, this kind of work.

          5 out of 5 stars Best 18 on CD;17 is close.......1998-11-09

Serkin recorded these concerti with #s 14-16 and 19. These were available briefly on cd and especially 15 and 16 deserve re-release. In 17, only his father Rudolf (Sony) and Malcolm Frager (Vivace) have matched his poised, detailed, and emotionally potent playing. In 18 I prefer Peter Serkin slightly to Alfred Brendel (Philips). Less desirable in my view is the recent Richard Goode performance (Nonesuch). Goode is quicker and more aggressive throughout, an approach which works better with the discmate #20. The English Chamber orchestra under Schneider is a great asset in the Peter Serkin readings, more elegant and euphonious than the Marlboro Festival Orchestra in many of the great Rudolf Serkin/Schneider Mozart concerti (the best of which are #10,12,and 17). At budget price, this Peter Serkin/Schneider disc is a must.
