Prokofiev: Piano Music Vol.1
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Eteri Andjaparidze, a pianist from Georgia now living in the United States, starts off this disc by showing what she can do. The Toccata was written to frighten pianists and audiences, but only the listeners will be afraid of the terrifying speed and power of this performance. The remainder of the disc stresses Prokofiev's lyrical side, which the pianist expresses with deep sympathy. In fact, even the Sarcasms, which are not very lyrical in conception, sound a little too pretty here. But that Toccata is a killer, and this generous disc (79:30) comes at a super-bargain price. --Leslie Gerber

Much of the repertoire here is new to Richter's ever-growing discography, notably 53 minutes worth of transcendent Liszt Années de Pelerinage excerpts, and a haunting Ravel Le Gibet. A live Beethoven Pathetique sonata proves more individual and arresting than Richter's excellent studio recording, as does this 1954 Weber 3rd Sonata to the better- recorded 1966 Philips version. Richter fans, however, will truly be floored by a whirling Ravel Alborado del gracioso and Rachmaninoff's Études- tableaux in E-flat, played better than humanly possible. Don't pass this set up! --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
Sviatoslav Richter at his best.......2006-10-09
"I detest analysis, which kills fantasy and which is the enemy of art...Enough with musical blah-blah; music speaks for itself."
- Sviatoslav Richter
Sviatoslav Richter was the greatest pianist of the 20th century. This is of course quite an audacious comment to make, considering the very same 100 years saw the likes of Vladimir Horowitz, Arthur Rubinstein, Alfred Cortot, and a host of other towering musicians and virtuosi, but let us consider the grounds on which this statement is built; Sviatoslav Richter was a fusion of formidable technique, innate musical and structural conception, breath-taking sonority and tone; he was a magician, a direct link between instrument and composer, unrestrained and yet forcefully controlled by musical instinct; his repertoire encompassed everything from Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier to the mysticism of late Scriabin, from Chopin to Hindemith, Von Weber to Prokofiev...in simpler words, Richter was the complete pianist, an astounding musician in the lineage of Liszt and Rubinstein.
Therfore it comes as little surprise that Richter will be cherished and remembered as one of the greatest Liszt interpreters who ever lived, and the historic recordings of excerpts from "Années du Pèlerinage" and "Venezia e Napoli" represented on this 2-CD set only reinforce his Lisztian stature - they are equal to his legendary performances of better-known masterpieces such as the Sonata in B minor, "Funérailles", and the "Transcendental Etudes", again blending awesome technical accomplishment with power and an aura of intense concentration typical of Richter...it is difficult to think of a better "Sposalizio", and the "Tarantelle" is flashy and colorful, conveyed in all of its Neapolitan splendor.
While the Liszt suffers from a somewhat mediocre sound, Beethoven's "Pathétique" Sonata in C Minor is a fountain of sonorous beauty and represents Richter's playing at its best. The Rondo is of stunning delicacy and élan, and the contrasts in the first movement are perfectly-balanced, combining both the light "cantabile" touch and inner depth which Op.13 calls for.
It is also interesting to note that this compilation of early Richter recordings offers both Liszt and Ravel, displaying the former's influence on the French composer's music. "Pavane pour une infante défunte" is one of those performances that never leaves the listener - just hearing it once carves a deep impression on the memory...the same must be said of "Alborada del gracioso" and "Le Gibet".
Three Rachmaninoff works are offered as well, the first being the E-flat Minor Etude-Tableau, Op.33/5, another the Prelude in C Minor (Op.23/7), and last but definitely not least, the Prelude in B-flat Minor from Op.32. The Etude-Tableau is played with a hint of sarcasm à la Prokofiev, grandly eloquent and sweeping, recalling Rachmaninoff's performance of the Presto from Chopin's Sonata in B-flat Minor. The Prelude in C Minor is always magnificent under Richter's fingers - it is the cold, unforgiving wind blowing across the barren Siberian steppe! The B-flat Minor Prelude, so chaste, so innocent, so melancholy, only leaves us hungry for more. And let us not forget - before we begin drooling and screaming for more Richter - Prokofiev's witty little "Gavotte" from Cinderella which closes this compilation quite nicely, a personal favorite of the pianist....Encore!
Delighted.......2002-08-07
I purchased this set more than a year ago and left it aside thinking I had bought it by mistake having the material on other cd...
Only to discover it a few days ago:I regret I had not listened to it before!!
Every item is superb, especially the 'jeux d'eau'(much slower than the Newark version),and the 'au bord d'une source'
The Weber sonata sounds even better than other version(thought the Praga version is superb too). The bass D yields a spectacular effect.
The Rachmaninov preludes offer the 'live' sound and a very musical Richter
Staggering piano playing, even by Richter's standards.......2000-10-12
What can I say? Two CDs-worth of previously unissued music from possibly the greatest pianist of the century at the height of his powers in some of his ideal repertoire AND IN EXCELLENT SOUND. Special higlights for me are the Liszt, especially "Vallee d'Obermann" and "Au bord d'un source", and above all "Le Gibet". Whew! I can't imagine a more haunting performance of this centerpiece of Ravel's "Gaspard de la Nuit" cycle. Why on earth didn't Richter record (or indeed play at all) the whole thing? He loved to tease us with the gaps in his repertoire, of course, but maybe even he couldn't see how to match the intensity he achieves in "Le Gibet" in the other two movements. What a loss....
As well as hurrying to buy this set, I also recommend that you consider a Richter disk on Praga which includes more Liszt and Ravel, including fascinating comparison performances of "Alborada del Gracioso" and "Valses nobles et sentimentales

berman rulez.......2003-07-02
this is the hippest recording of Prokofiev I have ever heard. berman is magisterial and must be channeling P.'s inner energies from Beyond. The performance of the 6th is the best in existence. The Juvenalia are interesting too, as windows into what was to come in P.'s musical evolution.

Customer Reviews:
For the curious listener.......2003-03-13
The very capable pianist Glemser's recording of Prokofiev's 2nd, 7th, and 8th sonatas is a typically satisfying release from the consistantly rewarding classical label: Naxos.
Glemser seems to understand Prokofiev's attitude very well, and brings along a suitably idosyncratic performance to present these great and especially challenging pieces. At once stiff and then loose playing throughout is usually what I hear from Glemser's Prokofiev.
The performance of the 7th is terrific. I wouldn't be surprised if it's one of the most consitantly brilliant performances of the 7th on disc, with the final movement that rocks as hard as anything from the past century.
The same goes for the 2nd sonata. I'll even goes as far to call it possibly the best, most engaging version ever recorded. Glemser seems to have a ball playing the final movement; one which I never grow tired of.
The performance of the 8th is where some listeners seem to be extra-critical( particularly the first movement). It's a very tough sonata, and many people are seemingly secure in the knowledge that there will never be another version above the Sviatoslav Richter version.
But actually, Glemser does it very similar to Richter's performance. If I remember right, Glemser even does the final movement a bit faster than Richter(though not as wild and speedy as Chiu's version).
It's the first movement that gets points off from this recording.
It's nice, but played a bit to....matter-of-factly, I suppose.
Anyhoo...
This is a great disc, and well worth the incredibly modest price tag.
And don't forget Bernd Glemser's other recordings of Prokofiev's piano sonatas(a complete set is finally available); each one worth it's weight.
I highly doubt you will be dissapointed.
A great introduction to a sonata cycle to rival Beethoven's.......2002-03-18
As with the piano concertos, the 9 piano sonatas by Prokofiev have, with a few exceptions, have been unfairly neglected. The 3 on this disc are brilliant, the 7th and 8th being a bit better, and understandably more famous than the 2nd. The playing here is great, this performane of the 7th is, in opinion, better than Polini's 'great' recording on DG.
Prokofiev on top.......2000-07-05
A genius at the piano, Prokofiev wrote incredible sonatas. Naxos have published all but 5 and 6, together with the Romeo and Juliet pieces. These are on two CD's, played by Bernd Glemser. I am in the habit of buying names which are not world renowned and Naxos have often helped a lot. I must say that Bernd Glemser has beautifully caught Prokofievs spirit. Hats off to Naxos, who have so often provided material of such a high standard for a reasonable price. To the readers, and Prokofiev admirers: Do not hesitate.

powerful.......2004-04-30
This is a highly charged work. Prokofiev sonatas demand a lot of mental/physical strength, not to mention solid virtuosity, and I can hardly believe that this powerful recording was done by a female pianist. Her solid technique is apparent everywhere.
It requires energy on the listener's part, needless to say, but in between sweet breaks come in, like Andante in Snata No.2 and Andante assai in No.4. She does a beautiful work in them. If you like Prokofiev, this is a great CD to have!

Classic Concerto Collections.......2003-06-18
Both Volumes "The Early Concerto Recordings" from the Isaac Stern Collection are absolutely brilliant. If these recordings were released today by Sony there would be two concertos per disc, they would come in some lavish original jacket packaging, and cost a small fortune. As is (they were released by CBS in 1990), they are packaged as two three-CD sets at a mid-line price. Granted the product is without a lot of bells and whistles, though Stern's anecdotes in the liner notes about the recordings are insightful and enjoyable, but who needs added fluff when the music is this good.
The concertos, recorded in the mid-to-late 1940s and early-to-mid 1950s, are either in high quality mono or early golden age stereo. On Volume Two the recording dates are as follows: Lalo 1956, Bruch 1956, Saraste 1946, Sibelius 1951, Bernstein 1956, Saint-Saens 1957, Prokofiev No. 1 1958, Prokofiev No. 2 1957, and Wienawski 1946. (Please note that a few of these very same performances appear in the "Isaac Stern-A Life in Music" series.) Though Stern later re-recorded many of these concertos, it is delightful to hear these earlier versions when he was still establishing himself as one of the world's great violinists. Those looking for a definitive disc of a given concerto may want to start with titles in his "A Life in Music" series, but for Stern-lovers out there (like me), these discs are pure gold.

Customer Reviews:
GRRRREAT!!!.......2006-10-25
This CD and the first Heavy Classix are some of the greatest compilations of powerful brassy classical music ever! None of that wussy string concerto stuff, just plain gusto, the kind of music you want to play at top volume with the windows rolled down so everyone will know what kind of god you are. (IMHO) I LOVE this cd and so will you...they're hard to find nowadays...so get yours while you can!
Great introduction!.......2000-04-14
The Heavy Classix CDs were my introduction to classical music, and it was a very successful introduction. Beginning with 'O Fortuna' (which you might recognize from any one of several movies including Excalibur) and continuing through a number of high-powered tracks, some of which (Finlandia, Sorcerers Apprentice) might be familiar to you, Heavy Classix 2 and its companion Heavy Classix are great places to learn about classical music and dispel yourself of the notion that classical music is boring.
