An exquisite, original, thoughtful and glorious CD. After hearing him live in Chiago and on the radio often I am thrilled with this event.. Despite years away from Angola his soul has produced a magnificent enfolding of sensitivity and joy. This peaceful attitude is what we hunger for all over the world. Keep it up, Mr. Bastos! YOu are truly universal, and everyone deserves to hear you.!

I was amazed by the songs, the delivery and the total effect of the album. The songs are absolutely wonderful, with poignant references to the political situation in Angola, his homeland. If you speak Portuguese, the effect is amazing. If you do not, the sounds will take you there, to the all-understanding level that only music can provide!

I was not disappointed by this CD. I love the gaiter playing on this. I only wished he had more slow songs like song #1. I don't understand a word of what he says, but I feel his Vibe!

When Angola fell into a bloody civil war, singer/musician Waldemar Bastos found himself in exile until the conflict ended in 2003, allowing him to return to his homeland. In Renascence he musically documenting the dreams of peace and the struggle to build again what was once ravaged. Of special note is the song "Georgina" imagining what it must have been like for many soldiers to return to Luanda after the war to find that their girlfriends had either died, or left for parts unknown, or took up with someone else. The other outstanding compositions in this strongly recommended recording include: Outro Tempo Nova; Aua Do Bengo; Esperanca; Pitanga Madurinha; Dongo; Sabores Da Terra; Paz Pdo A Amor; Twende Vossi; Kuribota; Pitenga Madurinha II (featuring Chaka Deumus); and the title piece Renascence.

Being a big fan of international music ~ "Renascence", featuring Waldemar Bastos is an opportunity to witness the magic of this wonderfully entertaining album...songs are performed in another language (songs are sung solely in Portuguese), throroughly enjoyable and have a natural beauty about them...within the liner-notes the lyrics are translated into english, but listening to them in their native tongue is completely mesmerizing.

      This late-period Art Pepper CD is neither a must-have recording nor something so slight that it should be labeled "for Pepper completists only." It captures the alto saxophonist at a San Francisco club date in September 1975, a pivotal period in his career. Just a month earlier, after a drug-related prison stint, he had completed Living Legend, his first studio recording in 15 years. Like Legend, Renascence finds Pepper brimming with ideas and in stylistic flux, moving away from the sweeter, lighter tone of his early days toward a deeper sonority and a beseeching quality influenced by John Coltrane. The difference between the discs is partly sidemen--instead of Legend's Hampton Hawes, Charlie Haden, and Shelley Manne in the studio, Pepper makes do with a decent but hardly distinctive local rhythm section on the bandstand. Renascence also bristles from the live setting, with the uptempo "What Laurie Likes" even more free-wheeling than its studio counterpart, and the ballad "Here's That Rainy Day" more uneven, though still filled with the sort of plaintive pain and beauty that summed up Pepper's star-crossed life and was his stylistic stock-in-trade. Tadd Dameron's "Good Bait" and Pepper's "Straight Life" round out the disc. --Britt Robson

      My views of Project Pitchfork are like my opinion of Cranberry juice. It's shockingly bitter and strange-tasting as compared to other juices, and yet the more I drink, the more I want; although I'd never admit just how much I really enjoyed it. Simply because I can't understand it myself.

      Project Pitchfork has been a subject of fascination for me for the past few months now and when I decided to take the plunge into the elusive territory of seeking one some of their singles, I knew that it had to be this one.

      No can deny Renascence. It's a classic. Any PP fan should definitely buy this one if they have any interest in owning some of the rarities. As for music fans from the industrial genre who are just becoming aquainted to this band, I recommend buying this with IO; the album which this song came from. This single ties in nicely because aside from the B-side that would have fit in well on the album, you also get to hear tiny fragments in the background of some of the other songs from IO( "Glowing like IO in space" in the background for the Icon mix ) This single couldn't have been heavily produced so I would get it now while you can.

      Renascence is a very unique PP song because it tells a story, and a very touching one at that. It is about two men who both lose their wives to a cruel and unfair form of Death. It's essentially a love song, but definitely NOT a ballad. It's one of the more melodic and dancable songs in the PP collection and yet Peter Spilles' shrill vocals add an intense emotional punch to the song also. It also sounds almost ironic since Spilles' voice( at least in the mid 90's ) has a chilling almost sinister sound.

      "The hint" Also makes this single well worth the money as the 6 minute unsettling dreamscape-esque song about humility( typical pitchfork fodder ) is absolutely sinful. Words cannot describe this. Just be sure to play it loud.

      My only gripe about this single is that the remixes really don't do the original justice. This is primarily because of what they did with the vocals. A tamed version of Spilles singing the lyrics takes away the emotional spark in the Opera mix and The fade out effects of the vocals in the Icon mix sound more like a poor quality recording than a creative spin on things. But aside from the vocals, the mixes themselves are pretty good. I didn't know what to expect of remixes of an Industrial song and I found these to be satisfying nonetheless. Even the cover art on and inside the sleeve is quite nice. Plus it was definitely worth it to own the rare versions of what is truly a phenominal song and then to even get another great song too.
