The international crossover success of tenor Andrea Bocelli has spawned any number of imitators on both sides of the Atlantic. But this collection of romantic arias and duets with violinist-conductor Lorin Maazel (who also arranges and helms the London Symphony Orchestra here) proves once again that the classical canon still offers ample room for compelling reinvention without nettlesome pop affectations. In reviving a genre (violin and vocal) largely dormant since the days of Caruso, Bocelli has taken some rewarding liberties with Rodrigo's "En Aranjuez can ta amor" and forged Liszt's familiar Liebestraume No. 3 into "Sogno D'Amore" with new, self-penned lyrics. Maazel's warm, evocative violin obligatos and sensitive, sympathetic arrangements infuse this tenor's showcase not only with unabashed romance, but as their lively romp through Tosti's "Malia" demonstrates, a sense of joyous fun. An album for romantics of all ages and persuasions--and one that gratifyingly demonstrates that crossing over is hardly the same as selling out. Enhanced CD includes a mini-documentary with comments by Bocelli and Maazel, as well as links to a more comprehensive interview with the tenor. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
Fine idea, weak execution.......2007-04-26
Lorin Maazel, in the self-indulgent pat on the back that passes for linear notes, manages to make one good point: the tenor-violin duet was once a fine tradition worthy of exploring afresh. As an effort to revive this dusty tradition, this disc is not successful.
Maazel seems to enjoy the feel of the violin under his chin, and generally produces elegant sounds. The orchestration, which he tells us in his notes evolved amidst a hectic schedule of conducting and rehearsing Don Carlo and Don Giovanni, is basic and generally inoffensive. Good thing he tells the listener of his busy schedule, or one would have to be harsher with his sometimes dreary musical arrangements.
Andrea Bocelli is something of a controversial figure in some circles. I am a picky listener, and suffer from the maniacal ailments that afflict the opera buff. Still, I have always enjoyed Bocelli's popular recordings. I like pleasant tunes sung by a full, clear tenor voice. Having said this, I find his operatic recordings lamentable.
Though not opera per se, Bocelli sounds over-taxed by the repertory at hand (mostly lovely 19th century songs). Each track is unworthy of comparison with past performances by operatic greats-- Pavarotti, Carreras, Gigli, Di Stefano, and Schipa come to mind. Bocelli's voice is strained, and he offers nothing resembling the grace required by these three-minute masterpieces.
Those who are in love with Bocelli's voice will no doubt enjoy this recording. Still, I strongly urge exploring this repertory as it is presented by far more capable performers, and far better endowed voices.
He's magnificent.......2007-03-12
I thoroughly enjoyed this CD, especially some favorites that I haven't heard in years. I wholeheartedly recommend.
Romantic sounds!.......2007-01-12
Adrea's voice continues to enthrall me! Even if you don't understand Italian, you will enjoy this album. Highly recommended.
Simply beautiful!.......2006-07-09
I wont repeat what others with positive reviews already said. Just know that none of Bocelli's CD's have ever disappointed me, and if you are looking for as fine a piece of work as possible (thus far), THIS and "Romanza" are it.
Average Bocelli at best.......2005-01-20
I bought this Bocelli album because I truly wanted to hear him perform "Plaisir D'Amour," one of my all time favorites. While I do love Bocelli I wasn't completely impressed with the entire CD. This is not the best I've heard from Andrea and his voice is not great throughout the CD. I do enjoy it though. He's one of the few artists I can listen to these days without getting a headache.

Customer Reviews:
Great Greig collection!!.......2006-03-01
So far there is a unanimous Amazon 5-star vote for this CD so I'm going to add my voice to the choir, and add to what other reviewers have said.
Aside from the Piano Concerto, Peer Gynt Suites, and a few lyric pieces here and there, Greig's music is largely overlooked. So it is very refreshing to find such a great *double* album that presents so much great piano music. Yes, the piano concerto is here, and it is an excellent recording, however, you should own this album for the performance of the rare Sonata, op. 7, the three sets of Lyric Pieces (op. 43, 54, & 65) and other beautiful piano miniatures here. The Sonata, timing about 20 minutes, is a full blown romantic work that could join the canon of great sonatas with those of Schubert, Chopin, and early to middle Beethoven (while leaving late Beethoven and Brahms in a class by themselves). The first movement of the sonata is short but epic in its emotional scope and thematic development, and the other movements are similarly excellently composed without going into the details. This is definitely a piece that more pianists should be familiar with.
The program choice to include full sets of Lyric Pieces is also very pleasing. Often, these works are presented individually. It is pleasant to hear them as complete sets in the published order, which brings out the contrasting characters and colors which the composer certainly had in mind when he published them. Greig's music is indeed a distinct breed: rhapsodic impulse and subtle harmonic touches originating from his Norwegian heritage often hint towards Debussian impressionism and late Brahms, but always maintain their distinct voice. Among the special gems here are the Butterfly (op. 43, no. 1) with its flittering right hand movements; 'To Spring' (op. 43, no. 6); Norwegian Dance (op. 54, no. 2), where a carefree opening turns into a thumping syncopated peasant dance; The March of the Trolls (op. 54, no. 3) which scampers left and right; and the famous Wedding Day at Troldhaugen (op. 65, no. 6) which brings the second disc to a rousing conclusion. Excerpts from Greig's Poetic Tone Pictures, op. 3 and Album Leaves, op. 28 (nos. 1 & 4) are also gorgeously played.
Though Andsnes has, in recent years, delivered impressive recordings of Schubert Sonatas, and Mozart and Rachmaninoff concerti (the latter with the Berlin Philharmonic) and has achieved tremendous international renown, these Grieg recordings from the early part of Andsnes' career (late 80s, early 90s)--which demonstrate pianistic subtleties, stunning technique, incredible character, fluid and poetic phrasing, and a strong overriding sense of form and structure--could be enough to convince you that Andsnes belongs in the pantheon of great living pianists: Argerich, Brendel, Kissin, Bronfman, Ax, Pollini, Barenboim, etc. This music is not often played by musicians of Andsnes stature and global reputation. The sound quality from the Virgin engineers is perfect--clear, crisp and full. This is a sensational album of piano music that show both the composer and performer in the best possible light: a must for piano-philes and Greig fans, and very highly recommended for everyone else. I believe the Amazon price of this *double* album (more than 2 hours!) is $7.97. Which means you can't afford to pass it up.
Andsnes Gives Grieg Back to Contemporary Audiences.......2005-12-03
Leif Ove Andsnes is a once-wunderkind of the piano who has matured into one of the finest pianists of today. His ability to finesse the subtleties of Mozart and Haydn, find the visceral flow of the Romantic composers such as Brahms, Schumann, Chopin, Schubert, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff, and still open the way for new works by contemporary composers such as Kurtag and Dalbavie is evidence of his enormous musicality and intelligence. But the joy of hearing Andsnes resurrect Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto, once the staple of every orchestra season but now generally and mistakenly dismissed as second class music, is cause for celebration. His current degree of insight and elegance in his interpretation of this concerto is strongly evident in his performances with the LA Philharmonic and Esa-Pekka Salonen as he begins a long artist in residence period. The collaboration is majestic and deeply moving.
This recording dating back to 2000 and performed with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Dmitri Kitayenko is strong but lacks the conviction of his current interpretation. That could be in part due to the less than rich sounding orchestra and somewhat pedestrian conducting. But still, Andsnes illuminates the Grieg with full-bodied sound, facile technique, allowing the music to come solidly from his hands and heart, proving that this concerto is simply not passé. With Andsnes it is truly important.
The bonus of this generous and reasonably priced 2 CD set is the inclusion of the 'Piano Sonata in E Minor, Op. 7', three excerpts from 'Poetic Tone-Pictures Op. 3', two excepts from 'Album Leaves Op. 28', the 'Agitato for piano', and 17 of the 'Lyric Pieces'. Andsnes traverses the various moods and technical challenges of these works with ease and conviction. He simply understands this repertoire better than anyone performing today. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, December 05
Amazing!.......2004-07-26
I just heard this performance of the Grieg piano concerto on a local classical music channel. I have not been very enthusiastic about this work up to now: on my CD which has the Schumann together with the Grieg, I play the Schumann regularly but the Grieg only rarely. That is until now: I just ordered this 2-CD set and hope, the rest of the recordings are as perfect as the piano concerto.
Outstanding Grieg program.......2002-10-02
The Andsnes--Kitayenko performance of the Piano Concerto--a warhorse if ever there was one--is the finest that I have ever heard. There is a great temptation for overkill in performing this but here it is played with quietly poetic but deeply felt emotion and with great flair in the robust third movement. Andsnes' traversal of the Lyric Pieces is on an equal footing with the legendary Gilels treatment(on DG Originals). This is one of the great bargains in classical music. Two CD's for the price of one mid-priced CD: vintage wine performances at a beer price.
Great Performances of Grieg's Piano Music.......2001-08-28
Not only is Leif Ove Andsnes one of our finest pianists, but he certainly must be reckoned as one of the foremost interpreters of Edvard Grieg. This splendid two CD compilation is replete with Andsnes' technically proficient, lyrical playing. His splendid performance of Grieg's piano sonata is certainly the highlight of this collection, but also worth noting are his compelling performances of the Lyric Pieces and the Piano Concerto. Indeed, his elegant, yet somewhat subdued, performance of the Piano Concerto is among the finest I have heard on a studio recording. The Bergen Philharmonic's playing is replete with warmth and brilliance. Those unfamiliar with Andsnes' playing should find this excellent two CD set quite rewarding.

I bought this CD for one reason...Bocelli sings "Plaisir D'Amour," one of my absolute all time favorites. This isn't the best of Andrea. His voice is sometimes weak and warbly. That said, I enjoy this CD for easy listening and simply because it doesn't give me a headache.

'The Music of Evaporation' - Mompou's Piano Music.......2005-01-13
In his extremely helpful (and superbly researched and written) booklet notes, Stephen Hough writes that the music of Federico Mompou is the 'music of evaporation,' and this telling phrase describes as well as any the special character of Mompou's piano music. He is often compared with Satie and indeed he was influenced by him, and by Fauré, Debussy, and Scriabin as well as others, but the major difference between them is that Satie was in his studied simplicity cocking a snook at the pretensions of art music while Mompou was recapturing the emphemeral innocence of childhood. People who knew him spoke of Mompou as being utterly without pretense, guile or artificiality and indeed some called him 'childlike.' If that be the case, it certainly appears that he was able to convey the sense-memories of childhood without an overlay of obvious sophistication. The music, of course, is extremely sophisticated in its craft, but this is in the service of rendering into tones a simple, uncluttered authenticity.
Federico Mompou (pronounced Mom-PO) was born in Barcelona in 1893 but spent much of his adult life in France. He was a musical Francophile and even once said that French music is 'the true music.' His music is generally gentle, only mildly dissonant, and always lyrical. He condensed his music to its essence, eschewing obvious formal gestures but using seamless and unobtrusive counterpoint, and consequently he wrote mostly miniatures, collected them into suites of 'Cancións y Danzas,' 'Préludes,' 'Paisajes' ('Landscapes') and the like. This recording, which won a Gramophone Award in 1998 and is now re-issued in a 'Special Limited Edition' (whatever that means; well, it does mean that the price has been lowered!), is essentially a recital of his music by which is meant that Hough has reordered pieces from the various collections to make a pleasing program. I had not seen the original issue so cannot tell you what if any differences there are between the original and this limited edition, but it appears that the program itself is unaltered. If one did not know the names of the individual pieces, one might think that this CD consists of one large collection, and indeed others have made the comment Mompou's complete oeuvre is entirely of a piece; once he found his style he pretty much stuck to it. Pieces written in the 1960s don't sound that much different from the ones written in the 1910s.
Mompou often set melodies from his native Catalonia but imbued them with his personal harmonic language which is heavily influenced by the French impressionists and Scriabin. He used a particular chord (Gb C Eb Ab D) much the way Scriabin used his 'mystic chord.' He occasionally used jazz rhythms and often used jazz harmonies. It is primarily his harmonic sense that betrays his style within a few bars. I first became aware of his music years ago from a series of recordings that the composer, himself a fine pianist, made on, I believe, the Ensayo label (later reissued by MHS). Although at first he sounded to me like a Catalan Satie, I quickly became aware that there was no intended artifice here. This music is as pure a statement of a composer's own personality as there can be. His titles are straightforward, without punning and satirical intent of Satie's.
What of these performances? They are superb--delicate without being fey, nuanced without being mannered. Hough is surely one of the few really great pianists before the public in our day. His recently released set of Rachmaninov concerto in live performance with the Dallas Symphony has set the music world on its ear, and rightly so. He has a penchant for exploring some of the byways of the piano literature and in so doing has championed works by such disparate composers as York Bowen, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, George Tsontakis, Xaver Scharwenka and others. His recorded performances of Mompou's 'simple' music has all the integrity and musicality of his other recordings and are a complete delight.
This is one to grab at its recently reduced price.

Customer Reviews:
charming enigmas.......2003-11-08
What lovely, mysterious music! Mompou's little pieces are often startlingly short, even inconclusive, yet his haunting, minimal, unresolved harmonics and contrasts both surprise and entice. Despite the tracks' actual durations, the frequently slow tempos create a sense of expanded time, as a few sparse notes and a few enchanting/evasive scraps of melody advance with a laconic deliberation that approaches a condition of reticence; and that bespeaks this music's quiet sorcery--Mompou's ability to capture something like reticence in musical notation. These are alluring, ambiguous works.
And Stephen Hough is simply one of our great pianists, in good company with Uchida, Perahia, and Goode. His faultless articulation lends commanding voice to his responsive, thoughtful readings. Hyperion's transparent recorded sound places one beside this fine interpreter as he awakens Mompou's charming enigmas.
More Monpou, please!.......2003-05-20
I became aware of Monpou's compositions when I heard just a snippet of a song in "Star Trek: Nemesis." I looked on the credits and the song being played was a Canzione #6 by Federico Monpou. I had never heard of Monpou, but his sound is a bit like Satie or Poulence (two French composers, contemporaries.) Monpou is Spanish.
If you like Satie and impressionistic music for solo piano, you'll love this.
Out of Nowhere.......2001-12-06
I purchased this CD on a whim, the description of "Spanish Impressionism" intrigued me. It has quickly become one of my favorite CD's of solo piano music. This is like Satie, yet harmonically more progressive. Full of tonal and dynamic contrasts reminiscent of Debussy. Stephen Hough's playing charmed me from the very beginnning with his delicate and refined playing. His use of the pedals is perfect, great sustain but never overboard, which gives Mompou's music the perfect airy tone. Where has this composer been all my life? It's like my discovery of Delius. This is music to relax by, to daydream to.
overlooked gems..........2000-06-27
Mompou's music is overlooked but worth discovering. If you enjoy Ravel or Faure and have a love for finely chiselled or sculpted little gems of music, this CD and others of Mompou's work will interest you greatly.
Ignore the "spanish" influences you may have read about his music- his music (the converse of Ravel's for example) is more French inspired (while a lot of Ravel's is of spanish influence).
At last something beutiful..........2000-06-23
for me to listen to other than Ravel. Shimmering, crystelline music, so very pure.

Such a shame.......2006-02-24
All of the 3 stars that I award this disc go to Andrea Bocelli. The violin of Lorin Maazel is a nuisance which interrupts my listening pleasure
A Euphonious Masterpiece.......2004-10-23
I spotted this album in Borders Books and Music and scanned it under the music sampler. Immediately after the first song, I knew I had to buy this wonderful CD. Bocelli's performance is amazing and Lorin Maazel adds a deligtful touch with the violin. My particular favorite is track 3, Barcarolle. If you enjoy Arias, especially romantic ones, I highly reccomend you purchase this album.
Beautiful.......2004-05-28
This album is great! The first song En aranjuez con tu amor is stunning!
