Dreaming Wide Awake
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Spanning three generations, New Circle Five is an acoustic improvising contemporary music ensemble. Diverse musical backgrounds result in unique twists as the five explore the one-time only sonic environment of collective creative improvisations. The New Circle Five grew from an invitation Susie extended to Pauline to join her for a duo concert; the duo concept quickly grew to a quintet and the New Circle Five gave its premiere performance at the Tonic in New York City on April 3, 1999. On this, their debut recording, New Circle Five perform their unique blend of collective creative improvisations from dreams of a non-violent world.

Lizz Wright's sophomore release, Dreaming Wide Awake is a gorgeous, floating atmospheric journey. Her deep, rich alto, matched by a similarly incredible depth of emotion, makes for a beautiful, timeless record. Highlights include a bluegrass-tinged cover of Neil Young's "Old Man," a gorgeously sultry version of Joe Henry's "Stop" (better known as "Don't Tell Me," as covered by Madonna), and the Youngbloods' positivity-tipped "Get Together." But not all highlights are cover tunes. Wright, along with songwriter Jesse Harris and Toshi Reagon, created the achingly beautiful "Hit the Ground," while Chocolate Genius (a.k.a. Marc Anthony Thompson) scribed "Chasing Strange," and Wright penned the jazz-tinged title track on her own. --Denise Sheppard
Album Description
On this album the singer, songwriter embraces the history of Jazz, Gospel, and R&B. Her collaborations with some of the most gifted artists already have this record tagged as one of the most original albums of the year.

What more can I say that the other reviewers have not...if all the songs are new and their are no covers of other people's songs?,(as I don't like when artist do this, anyone can do that)...then this is an outstanding album....in that style of music.
Stand of tracks are... I'm Confessin...When I Close My Eyes...Taste Of Honey...Without You...Stop...Hit The Ground...Chasing Strange and Trouble.
If this is to low tempo for you or if you just want more good music, check out Chrisette Michele's...I Am and Lina's...Inner Beauty Movement.
DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE!!.......2007-05-03
I heard the title track "Dreaming Wide Awake" on a local university FM station a few weeks ago, immediately ordered the CD, along with Ms Wright's first CD, "Salt", and have been listening to both of them constantly since receiving them. I play them together in a "random" mode on my player which allow the subtle differences of the two CDs to blend together to make a tremendous listening experience.
It would be difficult for me to pick a favorite song because there are several songs that I love and there are several types of songs to chose from. A truly fascinating collection of music with something for just about everyone and each song given her personal style. Both are truly remarkable albums that are musically adroit and lyrically captivating.
Please, don't miss these musical treasures, that will stand the test of time. I'll be playing these CDs for a long time. Truly remarkable musicianship by Ms Wright.
Dreaming Wide Awake.......2007-04-02
I am very impressed with this release. This artist is new to me so I had no preconceived ideas of what to expect. Her voice is very smooth, womanly strong. She brings me back to the days of my youth when I was hearing more black women sing of more than the blues, songs of inspiration and happiness, black women voices were heard in a more positive way.
I really enjoy listening to this CD.
Dreaming Wide Awake.......2007-03-21
Lizz Wright is a good contalto and adds a touch of blues in her music. its very sultry and haunting. I have really enjoyed this album
Intoxicating.......2007-01-20
When I heard this cd the first time, I was in a true place of intoxication and ectasy all at once. I am definitely feeling her voice it's so rich, smooth and sultry! I can't say enough about this album!
Buy it! I am going to wear this cd out as soon as I get it.
I can't wait for it to arrive!

Sweet and Dreamy with Elements of Ecstasy.......2006-07-15
"When I close my eyes I Dream of You..."
Ethereal guitar and smooth sways of sound make this a relaxing
escape. "Stop" will be recognized by Madonna fans and Lizz Wright's
version is much more slow and sultry.
"I'm confessing that I love you..."
Lizz Wright's music display's a warm heart contemplating dreamy thoughts we can all relate to as her voice reaches out into possibility. Her voice adds subtle dimensions of beauty to any song she takes on (Neil Young's Old Man) and as the mood slows down, a sultry connection between memory and future dreams evolves.
Lizz Wright's Dreaming Wide Awake is a very pleasant surprise in its poignant honesty and this album is filled with endearing lyrics and soul soothing comfort. Her voice is truly exquisite and is well suited to dreamy moods and romantic longings.

Jazzy Woo.......2004-04-28
Woo is such an eclectic songwriter and stylist that each of her albums is different. This one was done at the height of her jazz period. Has some classic Woo songs, such as "Sundrops" (calypso funk, I'd call it), "Ghost" and "Fade to Gray" (Sade-style grooves), and "Painting Your Picture" (almost a Bossa Nova lullaby).
If you are a fan of smooth jazz, there are some gems here. In terms of songwriting, this album rates five stars. Someday there will be a "Best of Woo" album and I'd bet it will hold its own against Carole King's "Tapestry."
The only reason I haven't give the album an overall five star rating is that I want more Woo vocals and less Woo band.
Woo is one of the best live performers in the country and her most recent album, "Walking the Skyline," was produced to capture that energy. So that might be the best CD to get as a first purchase.
But many of her fans also love "Wide Awake and Dreaming." Here's what a Denver Post reviewer said when it came out:
" ... a new album showcases Woo's considerable strengths as a songwriter, singer and bandleader. 'Wide Awake and Dreaming' (Sky Trail), out this month, bristles with poignant, appealing songs performed in a hip-shaking folk style that suggests Natalie Merchant crossed with Sade."
Nothing to WOO about!.......2004-01-27
This Wendy Woo album is boring to listen to. She has a very limited range and most of the songs on here sound the same. The tempos on here are slow and jarry. Not what I had in mind. If you want a really good Wendy Woo album, get "Gonna Wear Red". That's my favorite.

WOW!.......2006-02-16
This is just a wonderful selection of music and Rebecca does have the voice of an angel.. A must have for music lovers!
Outstanding .......2005-08-29
Her rendition of "A Taste of Honey" on this cd is the best I've ever heard of this great song. Worth it for that song only, but she sings the other songs (Home Sweet Heaven is another standout that shows her swinging side) splendily as well. Her style is reminiscent of Maureen McGovern's cabaret style but with a more light-operatic bent.
Velvet music.......2005-06-26
I bought this CD from Tower Records today, after listening it for the first time on the radio while driving home from the gym. I think this is the perfect background music for stylish home cocktail parties. I know for sure that my guests will love it.
Voice of an angel.......2004-03-26
This cd is a delightful addition to my collection. I first read about it in a cabaret email newsletter and it took me awhile to find it. I've already listened to it several times. She takes you on a lovely ride with her lyrical voice. Great selection of songs, too. A must-have for lovers of cabaret.
What a voice!.......2003-07-30
This album is an incredible listen. Sensual, powerful, jazzy.
It was a "Tower Recommends" selection upon its release in the Lincoln Square Tower Records store in NYC. Great easy listening!
