A gripping performance!

New York Concert Review, 2000
She enveloped her audience with the simple eloquence and love with which she so lavishly interpreted this music.

Album Description
This album, East West Encounter, contains an exciting encounter and harmonious amalgamation of piano music by 20th-century Chinese composers and traditional western composers. Contemporary Chinese composers Ning-Chi Chen of Hong Kong and Alexina Louie of Canada are featured, as well as Beethoven, Liszt, Franck and Chopin. One can hear the sounds of ancient Chinese battlefields, heroic scenes, and happy times in ChenÕs Cherishing Thoughts of Red Cliff, while effects of the ghost of an ancient Chinese warrior can be felt in LouieÕs Warrior, itself a striking fusion of Eastern and Western musical language and philosophical ideas. The two-movement Beethoven Sonata in E minor, Op. 90, contains much drama and beauty in its depiction of the love affair of Count Moritz von Lichnowsky. LisztÕs own piano transcription of his orchestral Mephisto Waltz is vivid with romantic drama taken from a portion of the Faust legend. A work full of sublime beauty and spirituality, PrŽlude, Fugue et Variation, Op. 18, by CŽsar Franck is almost an antithesis of the impish Mephisto Waltz. ChopinÕs Sonata in B minor, Op. 58, speaks for itself as one of the great masterpieces of piano literature.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect blend of femininity, techniques and passion.......2002-01-25

This CD from Dr Susan Chan is a wonderful breath of fresh air, with an edge over most recent big brand recordings. The choice of repertoire reflects Dr Chan's academic background and her masterful interpretation of more popular pieces. The album begins with an unknown piece by a modern composer Ning-Chi Chen, which portrayed a beautiful picture of ancient Chinese landscape and heroism. Surprisingly melodic for modernism, the amount of power, both emotionally and physically, packed into this piece is quite a revelation. A long time promoter for women composers, Dr Chan's second piece by Alexina Louie is a show-off of her feminine touches on the piano at its best; both sweet and proud. The fifth piece by Cesar Franck is a sublimely beautiful treasure, romantic and delicate at the same time. I wonder why this piece is not more popular amongst concert repertoire.

I consider her choice of the rest of the album very brave. With played-to-the-bone pieces like Sonata in E minor by Beethoven and Sonata No. 3 by Chopin, Dr Chan was almost begging for comparison to the best versions from Horowitz and Arrau alike. In this case, Dr Chan succeeded very admirably with her superbly detailed reading, adding a little feminine touch, and came up with a gorgeously performed presentation.

Being an ex-hifi reviewer, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the recording. While the pedal was not particularly quiet (very likely the piano's fault, not the recording engineer's fault) and that one particular piece sounded quite edited to take out the thumps, the general production quality is very high. The Faziali piano is more percussive than a standard Steinway, but it blends in seamlessly with Dr Chan's style.

Overall, this CD is a combination of innovative ideas, rare pieces revelation and a skillful performer who is passionately keen about sharing her music.

    Highly recommended.
