Some rare Bach transcriptions and works here. The entire CD is fabulous, my favourite the BWV 596 concerto (Murdoch transcription),a rarely performed work, which is breathtaking!
Definitely worth it.

Absolutely, Percy at his best............2006-07-15
For anyone who loves Merchant-Ivory films and recalls the background music for Howard's End (my favorite), Mock Morris has to keep playing over and over in one's head; but for me it's never annoying, only happy.
This ensemble enhances every composition - marvelous!
A delight!.......2000-08-12
This is one of the most delightful recordings of Grainger's works I have heard. If you're looking for Grainger or just enjoyable music, this is for you. It lifts my spirits and inspires me with the great performance as well as the wonderful, lyrical melodies.
More music of Percy Grainger.......1999-09-29
Chandos is certainly to be lauded for their wonderful Grainger project. This volume which features Grainger's chamber music is wonderful. The members of the Academy of St. Martin's in the Fields deliver a wonderful performance.
For those who love the music of Percy Grainger, this recording is a necessary one to have.

The Master of the Wind Orchestra.......2001-02-20
I know of no composer or arranger who writes more beautifully for wind orchestra than Percy Grainger. It is a difficult medium, much harder than an orchestra to make sound terrific. This is probably due to the lack of a single homogenous sound equivalent to the orchestra's strings. The woodwinds are too diverse in timbre, and the brass generally can't sustain (physically) the constant playing such a role demands. But Grainger consistently rises above these problems and gets the most gorgeous sounds from the group. Furthermore, he writes fascinating counterpoints and the whole is constantly filled with eccentric touches of harmony, orchestration, rhythm, and the like.
This recording, with the Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra, is superbly played. Although one may quibble at times with such things as an occasionally too-wide saxophone vibrato, those are minor indeed. In particular, the classics of the wind orchestra literature, Irish Tune from County Derry and Linconshire Posy (the movements Harkstow Grange and Rufford Park Poachers stand out even in this august company), are magnificent in every respect. Also worthy of note is the Colonial Song, with its beautiful sonorities; and the vibrant percussion of The 'Gum-Suckers' March. This CD is a must-have for anyone interested in wind music, in the art of arranging, or simply in imaginative and fascinating music.
Simply Nice.......2000-04-07
This ensemble really does a good job playing on this CD--The Lads of Wamphray, Irish Tune from County Derry and Molly on the Shore in particular. Personally, I don't care for their interpretation of Lincolnshire Posy. However, it's still some great playing. Wonderful job!
They were born to play Grainger........1999-05-24
I have been playing Grainger since my freshman year in high school and never have I heard Grainger played with so much passion as when I listened to this recording of the Royal Northern College of Music. Lincolnshire Posy shines brighter than even the Eastman Wind Ensemble's greatest rendition. Bravo!

Customer Reviews:
THE SORT OF MUSIC THAT BOSTRIDGE'S VOICE WAS MADE FOR.......2002-10-09
Ian Bostridge has one of the most beautiful voices on record, and he has consistently shown courage and wisdom in selecting material that will extend and develop his gifts. Not all of this material has been a perfect match for his young and soaring tenor voice, notably some of Schubert's more dramatic "lieder". In contrast, nothing could be more perfectly suited to his voice than this generous and beautiful collection of traditional English poetic settings by Britten, Finzi, Grainger, Warlock and others.
Bostridge brings more than just a beautiful tone and a subtle musical phrasing to these songs. The challenge any intepreter of English songs has to face is that, in contrast with the pure syllables of most continental languages, the complex vowels of "Southern British English" are formidably difficult to render attractively in song. It's not just a question of singing them prettily. Think how accurately the pronunciation of a word like "house" or "bath" can betray someone's geographical and social background; our vowels are a caste-mark as well as a means of communication. But somehow Bostridge himself, in his fruitful partnership with Julius Drake, manages to transcend our socio-linguistic divisions and deliver these songs in a way that places no barrier between the listener and the music.
The material is wonderful in its own right - a collection of lilting pastoral airs and occasional boisterous ditties. They are at one and the same time ancient and modern, embracing at once the mutual cross-fertilisation between classical and "pop" sensibilities that has always underpinned the best of English music. Even the most trivial of these songs (e.g. "Jillian of Berry") are memorable, and some of them (notably Sir Charles Stanford's chilling musical setting of the Keats' poem, "La Belle Dame Sans Merci") would not have been beneath Schubert himself.
It has been fashionable over the generations to belittle British classic music. "The land without song" England was dubbed, as the sleeve notes poignantly remind us. This CD is a healthy reminder that the global success of English popular music in the latter four decades of the 20th century did not appear out of nowhere; it was built on a solid foundation of past accomplishment that it was for too long fashionable to dismiss. Highly recommended.
Artistry beyond measure.......2002-09-20
This disk is a wonderful treasure. "To Gratiana Dancing and Singing" is an exquisite song that you should not go another day without hearing. I am speaking literally.
Mr. Bostridge's interpretation of Browne's song is amazingly compelling. His ability to express goes beyond that of most other singers - even some great ones. He notes the problems in singing in English (the "extra" vowels, the English vs. German approach to word painting, etc.) and I have to say he triumphs on this disk.
As he also notes, this is NOT a recording of a recital program nor are the songs "English" in nationality - the songs are just set to texts in the English language. I had not heard of some of these composers, but I am enthusiastic in saying that every song on this disk has something very nice to recommend it - at least at the voice and hands of Ian Bostridge and Julian Drake.
I must say a few words about Mr. Drake's playing. Overall he is simply incredible. He has a beauty of tone and a singing style that is not in anyway mere accompaniment. It really isn't even a partnership. It is a unity of artistry that creates this single entity, a song. There aren't many that can pull this off and Mr. Drake should be treasured for this ability. Just amazing artistry.
Please get every disk that Mr. Bostridge and Mr. Drake have done together. You will thank me for recommending this if you didn't know this already. Feel free to email me with your thoughts on this disk or any comments you have about Bostridge and Drake.
Perfectly Enjoyable.......2002-02-09
I already liked Ian Bostridge, but I thought "English songs" would be rather light and without substance. But I have fallen in love with this CD and never tire of it! I was already an admirer of Vaughan Williams, Britten, Finzi, Warlock and Delius, and I'm glad for this introduction to other composers as well. Also, much beautiful poetry is chosen, from Shakespeare, Yeats, Rossetti, Keats, and others, and each is treated with careful consideration by the composer, *partnering* music with poetry rather than simply enhancing or overshadowing the lyric. Bostridge seems to have the perfect voice for this music, light and charming when appropriate, heart-breaking at other times, always an engaging storyteller. He obviously understands intimately each word and note that he sings. The listener can hear his facial expressions and body language! The English Songbook is a beautiful collection of excellent craftsmanship, and one of the best CDs I have.
Do Not Be Deceived By His Look Of Innocence.......2001-10-14
Just look at Ian on the cover photo of this CD. He's sitting there looking coy, playing with his finger, hair a little mussed, with a very cute boyish smile, as if to say, "I didn't do anything wrong mommy, honest." Well he has done it this time.
This CD was my first exposure to Ian Bostridge. I bought it because I was very surprised to know that one of my favorite poems, the Cloths of Heaven by Yeats, was set to music. I spent 17 bucks for one song, and ended up cashing in on 23 others.
To Gratiana Dancing and Singing quickly became a favorite, as did Bold William Taylor. This last one was my first realization of Ian's gift of storytelling. Somehow he is able to make his voice sound like a woman, namely Sally Gray, and the narrator, and the macho Captain, all in the same song. The multiple personalities come out to play similarly in The Death of Queen Jane. I am lulled into quiet reflection and relaxation when Ian sings the Cradle Song.
Check out his CDs of Schubert Lieder, also accompanied by Julius Drake. Ian may be even more at home in German than he is in his native English! Julius is at home with Schubert, especially the water songs, and we are at home listening to this wonderfully weird, warm voice paired with masterful piano playing.
One of the best English-Song CD's available.......2001-09-12
Unlike the reviewer "A music fan from California, USA" I realize that this is not a recital program of music (as even noted in the liner). This is though, an unequaled collection of some of the most beautiful English Songs ever. Ian is on top of his game and J Drake plays, well, I don't have the words. He never fails to impress with his skills. Each key under each finger sings! Back to Ian. As a professional tenor, I am in awe of his voice. It is tender, moving, all the things you want in a good recitalist, and (unlike any of the opera tenors I can think of) it is note perfect. Yes, there are times when his voice seems a little light for the song he may be performing, but it is passionate and caries the pathos of each note/word he sings. BUY THIS CD - you will love it for ever!

At last! Maud Powell's musicianship available again.......2002-01-03
This is a reissue of "The Art of Maud Powell, a 'Victor Immortal' - complete recordings 1904-1917" prepared by the Maud Powell Foundation (Arlington, VA) in 1989. The guiding spirit behind that foundation, and project director of this collection, is Powell's biographer Karen A. Shaffer.
These three CDs were available only from the Maud Powell Foundation. I managed to get volume 3 several years ago after hearing all three discs from a library, but volume 2 has not been available. So, I've waited for volumes 1 and 2 hoping they'd come back "someday." Well, here they are, and Naxos has also released volume 3 according to their January 2 2002 newsletter.
Maud Powell (1867-1920) was in 1904 the first solo instrumentalist to record for Victor's new celebrity artist series on their Red Seal label. Their promotional materials told us to "Listen to Maud Powell's violin...if you want to find out how much can be got out of a fiddle, go--listen to--Maud Powell." They were right.
Powell's performances are the type of playing that may bring tears to your eyes, going straight to the heart and soul of the music and resonating with whatever you find inside yourself. She starts with a remarkably intense tone and naturally easy phrasing, then adds a tastefully varied vibrato and portamento (as vocally-inspired ornaments to heighten the expressivity). She varies her intonation according to the keys and the directions of the phrases, as her younger contemporary Pablo Casals did on the cello. It is extraordinary, like the best singer one can imagine but going beyond words. It is the kind of performance where it doesn't even matter what music she's playing...classical bon-bons, excerpts, folk songs, whatever. The music becomes a living thing in performances this good: breathing and moving and dancing right in front of you, and commanding your attention. It will get to you and you will feel it. What more needs to be said?
Bravo to Naxos for making these recordings available. The sound is pretty good, too, considering that the recordings were made before the availability of electric microphones. I hardly notice the background noise of the record since the performances are so directly engaging. These discs would be a "must-have" even at three or four times the price that Naxos is asking for them....

Chandos's Grainger Edition brings yet another cornucopia of delights delivered with indefatigable dedication and twinkling charisma by Richard Hickox and the BBC Philharmonic. The formula is the same as on this team's first and second volumes of Grainger's orchestral music, with tried-and-trusted nuggets such as Green Bushes and Colonial Song (both given here in particularly lavish orchestrations from 1905-06 and 1919, respectively) sitting alongside genuine rarities like The Merry King (based on a folk tune from West Sussex and boasting a seductively ornate piano contribution) and the amazingly colorful English Dance No.1 (a riot of a piece that prompted Gabriel Fauré to exclaim: "It's as if the total population were a-dancing!"). Perhaps the most startlingly original items here were conceived for wind band, namely the bracingly tangy Hill Song No.2 and that ambitious, extraordinarily titled essay The Power of Rome and the Christian Heart (which also draws on material from the first movement of Grainger's glorious Danish Folk Song Suite). Chandos's thrillingly realistic sonics fairly leap from the loudspeakers. All told, this disc is not to be missed. --Andrew Achenbach

Not the best starting point for Grainger.......2007-01-19
This collection of Percy Grainger's 'Orchestral Works' does not include those things for which Grainger is best known. And, it does not include those things of which I am most fond, which are mostly his choral and solo voice works. But then, I may not have gotten to listen to this very nice material. Like all of Grainger's work, this is far more accurately described as nice or pretty than 'beautiful' or 'sublime'. But it has its moments, and there are phrases here and there which really make me stop and take notice. So, it's good to give this a listen before you move on to 'Danny Boy' and the like.
The Beginning..........2005-07-30
This Disc is the first of the Grainger Edition but it's not really a good place to start if you've never heard Grainger before, mainly because there aren't many "fripperies" on here, only Shepherd's Hey! If you're looking for an intro to Grainger I'd go with GE Vol. 4 Works for Wind Orchestra, GE Vol. 13 Works for Chamber Ensemble, or GE vol. 17 Works for Solo Piano 2. That said this disc is great, opening with the haunting but powerful Duke of Marlborough and In a Nutshell Suite which must be Grainger trying to summarize his musical tastes in a way. Harvest Hymn and Blithe Bells are beautiful pieces in these large Orchestra versions, both with sweet Trumpet solos and Green Bushes is always fun. I was really and pleasantly surprised by There were Three Friends, Fisher's Boarding House, and We were Dreamers. These pieces are hard to describe because they are subtle but they have a peacefull quality to them. This disc is real quality.
Wonderful introductory recording of Grainger's work.......1999-07-27
This is a wonderful recording of the orchestral works of Percy Grainger. It is a wonderful introduction to the music of the late Australian-American composer.
Much of Grainger's music is highly approachable. It is, in many ways, a perfect introduction to classical music. Nevertheless, do not let the apparent simplicity fool you. Some of his work contains some of the most inventive orchestration of this century.
All in all, this is an excellent introduction to Grainger's work, and may indeed interest listeners in obtaining more recordings of Grainger's wonderful compositions.

Contrasts.......2005-07-30
The sixth disc of the Grainger Edition has all five "fripperies" Molly, Shepherds, Country, Mock, and Handel, with maybe the best versions of Shepherds Hey! and Mock Morris. This Country Gardens is a little slow for me and it's very similar to the Band version but I like it cause the Trumpet goes all out on his parts. But these pieces are contrasted by some of Grainger's least known works, i.e. Youthful Suite and The Warriors. Youthful suite is great, especially because he wrote it when he was 17. Doesn't get your blood really going like Molly on the Shore or Danish Folk Music Suite but it'd be nice to read to or listen to while writing. Warriors is in your face in the beginning and end and really quiet in the middle. It uses one of his best themes from Arrival Platform Humlet and the climax is awesome at the end. The middle section has a nice use of offstage brass which is going with the main melodies frantically but quietly while the strings play really smooth long notes. Also on this disc is the most traditional and classically beautiful versions of Irish Tune and also a full and beautiful version of Early one Morning, I always picture getting up really early in the morning and watching the sun rise and there's a moment when it switches from minor to major and it's like the Sun first appearing, glorious! This disc could be a good intro to Grainger, it's not the best of the Grainger Edition but that still means it rocks most other Grainger discs and other CD's in general.
Special versions (for Stokowski) of Grainger favorites.......2004-10-19
The Warriors may be the highlighted item on this disc, but I was blown away by the "versions for Stokowski" of seven Grainger pieces (mostly the great chestnuts) -- both the arrangements and the performances are fantastic! The composer made several versions of each, for strings, full orchestra, wind band, etc.; these Stokowski commissions are perhaps the most interesting. "Room music tidbits" Mock Morris and Handel in the Strand are here, but the other five (folk-music settings) make an especially outstanding set. The beautiful Irish Tune from County Derry and Early One Morning complement the sprightly Molly on the Shore, the somewhat wacky Country Gardens (*very* different from the well-known arrangement), and Shepherd's Hey with an ending that knocks you off your seat.
Another Percy Grainger admirer.......2003-02-08
I have been listening to and fascinated by classical music since college (I'm 57 now ) when I needed an 'easy A' and took a course in 'Music Appreciation'. Yet, I had never heard of Percy Grainger until just two years when I took a stab in the dark and bought a CD through BMG Classical Music called "Percy Grainger - In a Nutshell" (City of Birmingham Sym Orch, Simon Rattle conducting).
What a brilliant and fanciful composer; an Australian who used (arranged) folk songs and ethnic tunes from the entire English speaking world - with marches the equal of Elgar and dances on a par with Liszt and Dvorak. But enough name dropping. Listen to any cut in any CD in the currently produced series called "The Grainger Edition" and I guarantee that the world will seem to be a much mellower and more friendly place. Grainger's compositions will go all long way with anyone's search for contentment through music.
