5/97 Naird Notes
Almeda Berkey conducts the professional singers of Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum in a beautiful sampling of music from different times and places in America. From Alice Parkers setting of New Englands Wondrous Love to Tenting Tonight and Amazing Grace, the Cantorums rich vocal timbre soars on American Shadows (SDG C/CD 961). Also included in Jackson Berkeys choral tone poem South Dakota Shadows, a tapestry woven from a variety of styles including Scandinavian classical tradition, jazz, country and choral music.
About the Artist
Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum, Nebraska's Professional Chorale, is a choral group versatile in many styles of music and comfortable in a variety of performance and recording settings. The three words, Soli Deo Gloria, mean "alone to god the glory" and were penned as a postscript by Johann Sebastian Back to many of his manuscripts. Cantorum represents "singers." Not all of the group's music is of the sacred genre, however, nor is it all classical. The versatility of the singers and the Berkeys' own... read more

Album Description
With Our Shadows Will Remain, Arthur has delivered the album that will connect with the masses. It is at once his most intricate and focused work to date, featuring the mesmerizing rock tracks "Can't Exist" and "Even Tho". With other songs ranging from beautiful acoustic melodies (Echo Park) to harder-edged, expansive driving rock (Devil's Broom), to deep and gritty programmed beats (I Am, Wasted), this album is a real, vital diary of the landscape of urban life and the album that most clearly reveals the breadth of Arthur's incredible talents. Our Shadows Will Remain is an instant classic, destined to make Joseph Arthur a household name.
Customer Reviews:
You Can Not Go Wrong with this Album.......2007-07-02
"Our Shadows Will Remain" is up to the same excellent standards Joseph Arthur has set with "Come to Where I'm From"(my favorite) and Redemption's Son".
You can't go wrong with any of these three and if you like Joseph Arthur -you should go ahead and get them all. "Nuclear Daydream" and "Big City ..." are fine for a fan (which I am), but start with one of the three I suggest here if you are just being introduced to him.
I will wait for you Joseph.......2007-04-25
I suspect I'd enjoy this album better if I hadn't seen Joseph perform most of these songs live in a much more stripped down haunting manner. "Can't Exist" is the most obvious casualty of the overproduction here, making it for me at least almost unlistenable. There is just something a bit too slick about how this album was produced as if someone was afraid of how stark the material is so they decided to sweeten it. "I Am" is another one that worked quite beautifully live and seems almost hokey on the album, which is a shame as it is almost Beckettian in its clarity. Still some great songs but too much gloss.
Shadows and Light.......2007-02-15
Let's get the clunkers out of the way first: "I Am" sounds like the more pretentious bits of Pearl Jam via Daniel Lanois, while "Leave Us Alone" sounds like Meat Loaf. Given that Arthur usually writes with a pretty sure hand, both songs sound like jarring missteps.
On the other hand, Joseph Arthur's never been one to play it safe, so he can/should be forgiven if his reach occasionally exceeds his grasp. I've seen a couple of reviewers--here and elsewhere--complain that this album's a stylistic hodgepodge, but I rather liked the variation, which tends to be absent on, say, the more recent "Nuclear Daydream." It should also be said that it's not variation for variation's sake; from the ethereal "Echo Park" to the more earthy "Can't Exist" or "Devil's Broom," the changes are appropriate to the music. They're there to drive home the lyrics, rather than being there for their own sake. In contrast to someone like Josh Rouse (whose songwriting I love, but whose arrangements tend to fall into a middle-of-the-road sameness), Arthur's not afraid to stretch out.
What all of this translates to, when all's said and done, is someone whose work bears up to repeated listening... even if the number of those listening is probably much smaller than it ought to be. Joseph Arthur is one of a small number of artists whose work I'll buy with no questions asked, because the end result--whatever else it may be--is always compelling.
Album of the year?.......2006-06-14
Amazing songs, well constructed, different, mixed instrumentation, great use of drums and guitar and voice. Ranks with Hose Gonzalez as Album of 2006. Enjoy.

Even the toughest punks cry sometimes.......2006-08-02
I remember when this album came out. Hard fast loud aggro-core was in it's glory days in the underground all across America and TSOL were one of the main focal point bands of that scene, along with Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Minor Threat, Bad Brains etc. So imagine what most of the hardcore kids' reaction was to this album when it hit their ears for the first time. TSOL caught a LOT of... ahem... "do-doo" for it! I saw them on the tour they did for this album and most of the kids at the show were unreceptive to put it mildly! I remember one guy I hung out with back then who upon hearing the first 2 songs after buying this, yanked the record off his turntable and smashed it to little black shards over his speakers.
My personal take on it? Well, this album came out right about the same time I saw my first Damned show. That was a very pivotal time for me musically. Up until then I had been a typical early 80's short-haired hardcore hound... if it didn't move at the speed of light with amps cranked to 11 I didn't want to have anything to do with it. Seeing the Damned changed all that for me. They just blew me away when I saw them, and they were playing longer, more pop-oriented songs with a keyboard player in tow (from their then-new album "Strawberries"), but with incredible punk energy and attitude, and it cracked my mind wide open to new ideas and new tastes. Then I bought "Beneath The Shadows" a few days later and the timing couldn't have been better. The moody psychedelic overtones grabbed me just the right way, and the more I listened, the more I got into it. Most of my friends didn't though, and I got a lot of s*%t for openly liking it. Whatever. Later on many of those same people came to appreciate this album. The sad thing is that this album didn't get that kind of appreciation until after Jack and Todd left the band in disgust with all the negative attention they were getting at the time, and TSOL became an entirely different band altogether. Most bands that have had the balls and imagination to break new ground have suffered the same fate. Those are usually the bands I like best. To me that's all punk was really about anyway... doing your own thing no matter what the current popular trend is, and breaking away from the herd.
So anyway, this severely underrated album still gets a lot of play on my various sources of musical listening devices. It has aged well, like the rest of TSOL's early output, and is a profound testament to the pioneering punk spirit that says SCREW RULES AND GUIDELINES. In my opinion it was the last great TSOL album and if you don't limit your tastes to the rigid dogmatic guidelines of what necessitates a "genre", then you'll love this album... or at least appreciate it.
Great Album!.......2006-04-10
This is TSOL's most ignored album. The band got a lot of flak when this album was originally released because it is so different from their earlier work. Instead of sounding hardcore this album verges into deathrock territory.Songs such as Beneath The Shadows and Wash Away are very similar to work done by an early Rozz William's Christian Death. The guitar playing and the keyboards on this album are very haunting and give it a darker edge than the rest of their work. Dance With Me is more horroresque, while this album deals with deep emotions. I totally recommend this album.
Proto-Shoegazer? Dream-Core?.......2006-02-23
How amazing to have this released once more. For me, this
album pushed the boundaries of punk, crossed lines, and
successfully mixed together several genres.
But at its heart this is perhaps the ultimate "I just got
dumped" music, a whole CD of it. Any time you need to wallow
in self-pity/loathing, this music will take you there.
i can relate to this album and its even better than the music is good.......2006-01-02
beneath the shadows doesnt get the attention it deserves. It's all around Dance with me. Dace with me is a good album. But this one is good too. A lot of the songs are about a girl. But not your "im so in love" songs. These are about heart ache and watching ur x be with another man. My gf just broke up with me when i bought this cd (coincedently) and i felt i could relate to these songs. Beneath the shadows is a great song. One thing about this album. Its a mix between punk rock and journey type of music.
A true lost classic.......2005-07-16
This one threw a lot of people for a loop: melodic, keyboard-heavy tunes, with more than a hint of psychedelia and prog-rock, from the hardcore punk band TSOL. This album is not unlike the work of the Damned and Echo and the Bunnymen at the time, and is similarly brilliant.
"Glass Streets" is one of the best rock instrumentals ever, period. Just a beautiful, yet powerful, classical composition with rock instruments. Tunes like "Wash Away," "Walk Alone," and the title track bleed through the speakers with raw emotion, punk drive, and toe-tapping catchiness to boot.
Any fan of melodic punk rock should run, not walk, to get this one.

Evocative, erotic and very modern........1999-01-11
This is a very interesting collection of works by contemporary New York composers. All are written for a chorus accompanied by a string quartet plus one other instrument (percussion in the case of the Cipullo and a harp in the case of the Wagoner). All have a sharp modern sensibility, and deal with the themes of love and eroticism.
Beyond that the pieces differ. The Cipullo pieces are rhythmic and lively, De Blasio's are sometimes frighteningly intense, while Wagoner's longer work has more of an elegiac quality. All of the works are well worth trying.

An intimate, meditative dialogue between a master musician and his flutes........2006-12-15
Shadows of Dawn is an intimately haunting, meditative dialogue between a musician and his instruments. Peter Phippen is a World Flute specialist and a maverick innovator in the Genre. This latest album explores some of the oldest and deceptively simple flutes like the Japanese Shakuhachi, the transverse bamboo and the revived Anasazi flute. The flutes are simple "only" in the fact they are hollow tubes with a mouth hole and some finger holes. Unlike the ubiquitous Native American Style flutes which have a stop, two air chambers and are easy to produce something musical; the flues on Shadows of Dawn are decidedly difficult to play and learn and the player must "seduce" the slurs, glissandos, upper octaves and sometimes even the fundamental note from these instruments. Through the research of Dr. Richard Payne and master flute maker Michael Graham Allen the Anasazi flute is seeing a revival and in the hands of Phippen the flute sounds mysterious--like colored air. It is played are on some of my favorite tracks of this album. Other tracks like "A Silent Place," "Spirit of the Woods," and "Safe Passage," demonstrate the control, intonation and expressiveness of Phippen's playing.
Like Phippen's previous albums most, if not all, of the songs are improvised in the studio. The percussion and synthesizer are supportive and musical. Good improvisation combines intelligent and intuitive choices with freedom and spontaneity. Phippen chooses impeccably and transcends the devotional discipline that can limit some musicians. In fact I was reminded of the Jazz Flutist, Herbie Mann, on a few songs. Every one of these songs is an inspired melodic, spiritual journey into a very intimate instrument where simple breath flowing through wood invokes a suspension of time, place, and feeling. Phippen began by playing the Bass Guitar professionally at age twelve, was a member of a Billboard charted pop band, played in an Avant-Garde trio, lectures on World Flutes, works with school children and is a headliner at major Flute and Music festivals.
I get the sense from talking with Phippen and listening to his music that whether it be the Flute, the Bass, and the Drum etc., that this man is a musician who walks his talk and is charting his own territory. Equal parts Jimmy Hendrix, Coyote Oldman, Herbie Mann and master world flutist, there is no ego in this music and the ornamentations are tasteful and right on. The great jazz musicians like Coltrane, Byrd, and Miles all practiced and crafted their instruments so that they would have an internal repertoire of skills allowing them to express what ever they were feeling musically at the time. Phippen is of that ilk; a humble, reluctant master of World Flutes just "trying to get out of the way of the music."
Peter Phippen's Shadows of Dawn: A CD Review .......2006-09-11
by Dr. Kathleen Joyce-Grendhal, Executive Director
International Native American Flute Association [..]
In Shadows of Dawn, Peter Phippen once again reveals his mastery of world flutes, gently bringing forth every nuance and color bend from each instrument. He skillfully maps the heart and soul with every subtle, emotional musical gesture. Every phrase lifts the spirit and entices the ear to listen more closely in search of the aural journey that Phippen is so skilled at gifting, quenching the musical thirst of the being in quest for soulful, musical saturation.
With every performance, it never ceases to amaze me at Phippen's skill and mastery of every type of world flute. The sounds he pulls forth from every instrument is both astounding and natural. Many world flute players are masters of their instruments, but Phippen instills an aura of worldly mysticism and elemental knowledge in each breath, making the music delicate and achingly beautiful. His music on Shadows of Dawn is the aural manifestation of yearning and desire, sadness and loss. Every human emotion runs rampant in the soaring melodic explorations of Phippen's music; he is an old soul with prismatic stories and many profound musical gifts to share.
Shadows of Dawn emphasizes world flutes, yet there are other instruments present such as synthesizer, Nigerian drums, chimes, crystal singing bowls, conga, and African drums. However, the accompanying instruments subtly enhance the masterful musical shadings of Phippen's flute lines. The textures are always clean and pure, allowing the the flute to reach out and gently caress the ear of the listener with rich flute sounds laden with serenity. The presence of percussion truly complements and feels like the heartbeat within each of us; feel it in your being as Phippen floats his warm flutes phrases through the air and into your inner being.
The flutes with which Phippen expresses himself on Shadows of Dawn are an Edo period shakuhachi, a transverse bamboo flute, an Anasazi flute, Native American flutes, a contemporary shakuhachi, and a bone whistle. Each aerophone has its own story and voice, and Phippen coaxes the beauty from each instrument as his artistry unfolds with each musical selection.
It is my opinion that Peter Phippen is the most overlooked flutist in the industry. He is not only a gifted world flutist, but he is a true artist. Each musical note is a color on the palette and each phrase a soulful brush stroke, creating a musical work of art to be cherished and taken into the soul like a warm drink of musical sustenance. Phippen's music comes from his heart, and he has much to say to the world and many gifts to reveal. There are many people in the world who play world flutes, but there are few who are soulful, truly ambient artists like Peter Phippen.

Customer Reviews:
Good performance of good music.......2002-04-05
I find less to criticize than others in this music and performance. If you know MacDowell, you know the kinds of things to expect from these songs. Not great music, but still beautiful genteel songs. MacDowell lets the lyricism flow smoothly. Most of the songs float along in the 6/8 rhythm MacDowell used so often. Concentrating on the melodic line, some of the occasional awkwardly thorny harmonies you can find in his miniatures fade into the background. Indeed, some may think the piano is too far in the background here. Too bad, because the late James Barbagallo obviously had quite a gift for MacDowell interpretation. Check out his recordings of MacDowell's solo piano works. What of tenor Tharp? Some may find his voice a little too thin, with a bit too much vibrato. But I say the songs are well sung regardless. Maybe the problem is that the songs really required a woman's voice. But what's done is done. These complete songs needed to be recorded, and this performance quite adequate, reservations notwithstanding. Over all, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this recording.
Tepid music, tepid performances.......2000-03-26
I'm sorry to have to say it, but this recording contains music that is undistinguished in performances that are competent only. The music is Grieg-and-water. The American tenor's voice is light-weight and charmless. The pianist is excellent. You can't beat the price, though, if you really want to hear this repertoire.

Album Description
Flavored in her hard-boiled, post-mod Raymond Chandler style, but running an eclectic gamut with help from the Anubian Lights production team in channeling beats, diseased invectives, word projectiles, and twisted cabaret noir. "Smoke" delivers serious night music and features performances and contributions by Nels and Alex Cline, Carla Bozulich, Vinny Golia, Terry Edwards, and NYC avatar Adele Bertei. Presented in a deluxe 4-color 24-page booklet, and utterly perfect for the 3 a.m. social extension of your choice, or perhaps a soundtrack for the skeletons in your closet.

Cycling Cynicism with Doom and Boom.......2005-01-19
Part of NYC's "No Wave" movement of the late 1970's spoken-word performance artist and confrontationalist Lydia Lunch began her career at the not-so-tender age of 16 as the lead vocalist for Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. Since then, she had collaborated with Nick Cave and Roland S. Howard from the Birthday Party, Sonic Youth ("Death Valley '69"), Jim "Foetus" Thirwell on a variety of projects including Stinkfist, and photographer/director Richard Kern. Lunch has also authored books such as "Incriminating Evidence" and "Adulterers Anonymous" (with Exene Cervenka).
Lunch's latest musical sacrifice,"Smoke in the Shadows" is a notably jazzy affair and probrobly her most commercially acessible effort to date. Like an investigator at the scene of a crime, she portrays a femme fatale with a penetrating stare and sultry, breathy come-on. Her obsessions continue to focus on doomed relationships complete with visions of guns, explosives, shotgun shells, cigarette butts, burning beds, car crashes, high heels and bottles of bourbon. She is an angry woman indeed. And her cynical, confessional lyrics are full of venom.
Lunch has assembled an infamous cast of characters and New York "jazz guys" to accompany her spoken ranting~guitarist Nels Cline (Mike Watt,WILCO) and his brother Alex on drums, Niels Van Hoorn on saxophone (Legendary Pink Dots) and Andel Bertei (The Contortions) as backing vocalist on several tracks. Other instruments include a vibraphone, upright bass, alto flute, baritone and alto saxophones,a trombone and trumpet. Together they create a moody and haunting atmosphere like a soundtrack to a David Lynch film.
In the end,Lunch acts as a predatory powder keg filled with violent verbal attacks, preying on other animals~in this case men. She appears to be tough yet vulnerable, callous and completely carried away by a desire to confess her sins and vituperate the faults of others.

Album Description
Beautifully produced by Kevin Salem (Mercury Rev, Bad Brains, Chocolate Genius) and Knox Chandler (David Gahan, Siouxsie & the Banshees), Bethany Yarrow's debut cd, ROCK ISLAND, mixes the gloss of pop production with banjos, dulcimers, harmonicas, slide guitars, gospel choirs, and the sampled ghosts of some of the great blues singers in America. In unexpected ways, the CD borrows from the deep river of American song and creates a gorgeous and totally contemporary sonic landscape with Bethany's haunting voice at the forefront.

Multi-talented and Great.......2004-05-12
If you like folk with a twist of a little Brigid Boden -- or maybe Carolyn LaVelle...you'll love Bethany Yarrow. She incorporates sounds that make them unique but places her high on the map of individual, skilled singer-songwriters.
From classic folk interpretations with a driving beat to a warm duet with her dad, this is a must have album that you'll enjoy from the first listen for years to come.
Buy it and you won't regret it!
Amazed and Entertained.......2004-04-19
My wife and I recently had the opportunity and honor to experience this wonderful bright light live at a non-smoking night club in Rock Springs, Wyoming; "Johnny Mac's". We listened and marveled at the beautiful raw talent of a young and vivacious woman and 5 string gifted cellist "Rufus". A magical evening filled with rythmic darkness, myth and hopeful enlightenment. The evolving talent and gifts of prior generations continues to grow as the dauthter of the voice who brought many of us to this place speaks new and refreshing old wisdom. If you miss this opportunity to grow deeper into the mystery of life and death, it's your choice. Ours was to embrace it and we're grateful for it. May you risk to try it, simpy savor and enjoy it.
MAGNIFICENT.......2004-02-14
Beautifully done. My favorite tracks are 2, 6 & 9
