Beethoven: Three Sonatas (Moonlight / Waldstein / Op.110)

Editorial Reviews

Reference's CDs are marketed primarily as realistic sound recordings, on which level this disc is a decided success. The piano definitely sounds like a piano, well above the high level norm of contemporary recordings. There is another realism to be considered, though, and that is how well Beethoven is reproduced by the performances. Despite Eugene Istomin's long-standing reputation as one of America's leading pianists, his playing here is distressingly bland, setting out the music without a strong point of view and minimizing the power of Beethoven's conception. --Leslie Gerber

In the main, the youthful Beethoven chamber music collaborations between Daniel Barenboim, Pinchas Zuckerman, and the late Jacqueline du Pré are characterized by broad, liberally fluctuating tempos, ripeness of tone, and a tendency to place expression ahead of stylistic considerations. Zuckerman's sweet vibrato, for instance, seems misplaced in Beethoven's terse, combative syntax (the earlier trios and violin sonatas, for example). Likewise, du Pré's throbbing solo lines impose a late-Romantic patina on the music that some listeners will find more appropriate to Arensky or Glazunov. More often than not, Daniel Barenboim's piano provides the decisive voice, by way of setting tempos and effecting transitions.

While the leaner, more economically expressive Abegg Trio (Tacet) and Vienna Piano Trio (Nimbus) Beethoven Trio offerings better reflect the composer's headlong brio and nervous energy, the Barenboim-Zuckerman-Du Pré team oozes sheer musicality and involvement in every bar. For this reason, one might well prefer Zuckerman and Barenboim's overwrought rapport in the Violin Sonatas to the violinist's tighter RCA remakes with Marc Neikrug at the piano. Du Pré's tragic illness prevented her and Barenboim from tackling the Cello Sonatas in the studio. Happily, their exciting, communicative live 1970 Edinburgh Festival traversals (plus the variation sets) were broadcast by the BBC and captured in excellent sound. So was a touchingly indulgent Tchaikovsky Trio preserved from one of Du Pré's final concerts, included as both a bonus and a memento. Tully Potter's excellent booklet notes give equal time to music and artists, and rightly discuss the performances in the context of their time. It's good to have these recordings gathered in a budget-priced, space-saving box. --Jed Distler

As noted above, this 9 CD set resulted from the youthful collaboration of Barenboim, du Pre (soon to wed Barenboim) and Zukerman. Clearly Barenboim is the driving force. As the info booklet asks: "Would Beethoven have approved of what Barenboim does here? Perhaps not, although he would surely have applauded the young man's courage".

Sadly, du Pre's illness (she had MS, forcing her retirement in 1973 and ultimately causing her untimely death) seriously limited the collaboration. Because her illness prevented a studio recording, the cello sonatas are from 1970 live recordings taped by the BBC. The audience noise is distracting, and I simply cannot understand why the coughs and chair scrapings could not have been edited out.

Barenboim and co really do drag out the slow movements; sometimes to good effect, and sometimes too much in my view. For example, the third movement of the Archduke Trio goes for 12:07 on the Naxos recording but extends to 16:02 here (but this one is still a better rendition).

To fill out the last CD, EMI includes Tchaikovsky's Piano Trio Op 50 (taped from a live performance in Tel Aviv in 1972), which is not in the same league as Beethoven's (but I guess they had to do something with the space).

My main complaint is that the thick 3-language info booklet is devoted entirely to the history of the performers and includes not a single word about the music itself!

That said, I am still very glad that I bought this set.

    Album Description

Written between 1820 and 1822 at a time when Beethoven was suffering from a variety of maladies including nearly total deafness, each of these three sonatas stands alone as a great artistic achievement. Heard together in Victor Rosenbaum's magisterial performances, these works remind us of what vast new territories of the imagination Beethoven explored. Pianist Victor Rosenbaum became a member of the piano faculty at the New England Conservatory in 1967, and went on to head both the piano and chamber music departments at NEC. In addition to his long tenure at NEC, Rosenbaum was Director and President of the Longy School of Music from 1985 to 2001, where he continues as a faculty member. Victor Rosenbaum has toured as a soloist throughout Europe and the USA, and in 1996 made his first solo recording for Bridge Records-a highly acclaimed Schubert recital (BRIDGE 9070). In this recording, made in Boston's acoustically superb Jordan Hall, Rosenbaum plays Beethoven's final three sonatas in powerfully insightful readings.

5 out of 5 stars Rosenbaum Brings These Works Home.......2007-02-12

This is the single most satisfying recording I own of Beethoven's last three piano sonatas. I rank it alongside Gilels' offering.

Claudio Arrau was once noted to have observed that you can't really play the late Beethoven sonatas unless you're at least 50 years old. By that, I believe he meant that you have to have lived and contended with a certain minimum set of important emotional milestones and experiences that can only occur with maturity. I have come to increasingly appreciate Arrau's observation, especially listening to the performances of younger artists. It seems that some of what is being said in these late works simply goes over their heads. In contrast, none of the emotional terrain these works cover is lost on Maestro Rosenbaum.

I had the pleasure of meeting Maestro Rosenbaum and playing for him in a master class. I also observed him with other pianists during their master class sessions as well. Rosenbaum brings a rare and refreshing psychological-mindedness to his interpretation of a composer's work. His playing reflects this approach in that his performance of a work feels like the unfolding of a compelling and inevitable emotional drama. After listening to him, I feel I've been told a story, even if I can't remember any of the words.

If you are looking to be emotionally moved by these works, you will be very pleased with this disc.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Sonatas by Beethoven...Played by a Master, Bar None!.......2007-06-09

Lovely, Lovely, Lovely......nothing else will do for an opener for this review of this beautiful album of three of the greatest piano works by Beethoven.

Oh, so carefully, yet deftly, played. Such crisp deliniated bite, where it should be. So softly and lovingly shaped phrasing. All this from these time-worn, beautiful hands on this Master Pianist, who, sadly, was not in the recording studio much the last half of his life. This man was the wonderful Eugene Istomin, who originally played with Pablo Casals at the end of his career. After Casals' death, Eugene married Marta, Pablo's widow, and also began playing with Leonard Rose (cellist), and Issac Stern, as the "Istomin, Rose, Stern Trio" and continued in this vein for many many years.

I knew him from these recordings back in the 60's and 70's, and always loved this most generously talented threesome's LP releases. With the demise of the LP, lots of people were "lost" when CD's came out, relegated to the back of the closets at the studio libraries. Slowly, Sony/CBS began releasing these recordings. Also, Eugene made a very few new recordings, of which, this is one.

I do not recall if this was his last, or the Mozart sonatas, but one of the two were. One would never know just how ill this man was to hear him play these masterworks with such deep feeling and deft fingerwork. (I do not agree with Leslie Gerber's assessment of this recording at all, and as I continue to grow still older, I am finding I disagree more and more often with "professional" assessments).

Having always held Mr. Istomin in such a high regard, I was more than doubly surprised and pleased to have had the wonderful experience of lunching with him shortly before his passing. While I was living in DC a few years ago, a friend of mine had done some electrical work for him in his apartment and became friends with him. So, he "surprised" me one day by telling me that he had a treat for me for noon's repast. What a wonderful time, sharing food with this wonderful man, and listening to him tell stories from his past in his soft and gentle voice, and to watch his hands as he spoke. Later, we went over to his apartment, and he played the "Pathetique" for me (on Vladimir Horowitz's Steinway, which he owned, parked in his living room)....wow! I shall never forget it. Afterward, he pulled out a copy of this cd and autographed it to me. How sad that only a few months later he was gone. But, I never listen to his recordings without forever being so deeply pleased that I got to meet this towering musical giant from my "childhood" of finding/discovering classical music at the age of 20!

If I could have just one wish, it would be for the "Pathetique" to have been also included on this truly Desert Island disc.

Eugene, (as Bob Hope would say), "Thanks for the Memory"....."Salute!, you Grandest of Masters!" ~operabruin

(PS: I realize this sort of runs on a little about meeting Mr. Istomin, but I thought perhaps you folks might enjoy this.)

Revelation brings out the same January 12, 1975, Op. 111 issued by Music & Arts in a brighter yet hissier transfer. Sviatoslav Richter dives headfirst into the opening movement, safety last, looking Beethoven's "Allegro con brio ed appassionato" straight in the eye (what a tempo!), and generates both high tension and repose in the sublime Arietta as well as in Op. 109's variation movement. The slightly distanced miking in an October 10, 1965, Op. 110 is kinder to Richter's metrical shifts and accentuation than the clangy version from the same year on Praga. The pianist still pounds out the left-hand quavers in the Klagender Gesang, in contrast to his more graceful Philips and Live Classics traversals a quarter century later. A worthy but not indispensable addition to Richter's colossal discography. --Jed Distler

            4 out of 5 stars Beethoven Master.......2000-02-27

I must admit to finding Beethoven a bit of a bore- he led music out of the Classical era and into the heavier Romantic era. In his last piano sonatas in particular, Romanticism is revealed at its very peak, and they are demanding for the listener as well as for the performer. Yet in Bernard Roberts, Beethoven has a living champion like no other, and this disc is a fortuitous example of Beethoven playing of the highest standard. It is as if Roberts has been able to sense Beethoven's very soul buried deep in the music, and has found a way to lift it out and share it with us through gripping mastery of the piano and its expressive sound world.

If you like Beethoven, you MUST listen to this CD; if you find Beethoven a bore as I do, you should still consider this CD- it may surprise you.
