Great Performances from the Library of Congress: Vol. 4
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Following up the best selling success of Nathan Milstein's 1946 Library of Congress Recital (BRIDGE 9064) is this first release of the legendary violinist's only other concert at the library- a 1953 recital with pianist Artur Balsam. The program consists of three of the great masterpieces from the violin repertoire- Beethoven's "Spring Sonata", Bach's Partita in D Minor, and Brahms's Sonata in D Minor, Op. 108. The historic release is made possible through a new co-production agreement between The Library of Congress and Bridge Records, and is the fourth volume of the series "Great Performances from The Library of Congress". Featured on this disc are a majestic and intensely played performance of Bach's Chaconne, and an elegantly phrased "Spring Sonata", and a Brahms D Minor Sonata rendered with passion and style. Hear why so many critics rate Milstein as one of the greatest violinists of our century!

Stunning version of Bach Chaconne (BMV 1004).......2002-03-26
I have many, many versions of this chaconne and yet each time I sample this Milstein performance I am enraptured by the passion. This is a much less controlled version than Perlman's, which is my other favorite. With Perlman's version I easily climb a musical stairway to bliss; with this (the 1953 recording) I am swept aloft.
By the end of the Chaconne you'll have been transported beyond thinking about the sound quality of this older recording which is more than acceptable considering the musicality.

Album Description
Leopold Stokowski (1882-1977) was certainly one of the most celebrated conductors of his era, and, some would say, one of the most notorious also! His appearance in Hollywood films (with Deanna Durbin), and his collaboration with Walt Disney (Fantasia) took full advantage of his highly photogenic appearance, and quickly thrust the maestro into the limelight of pop culture. Stokowski was a legendary interpreter, and his powers are heard to excellent advantage in the three works comprising this release. A leader in the performance of new music, Stokowski brought intensity of line and clarity of texture to his work- characteristics heard in abundance in this recording. Always interested in achieving better sound, Stokowski listened to rehearsal tapes before this concert, and requested re-positioning of the orchestra (including putting the basses on risers). This exciting in-concert recording was first released on the Library's own label. For the Bridge release, the original 1960 master tapes have undergone extensive sonic restoration and remastering.Track Listings:
