LONESOME ROAD (THE CRAWFORD VARIATIONS) (1988¿89)
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Lonesome Road (The Crawford Variations) is a set of variations on Ruth Crawfords harmonization of the folk song of the same name. Her arrangement was published in Carl Sandburgs The American Songbag (1927). The piece is in three sections, seventeen variations each. Those in the middle section (XVIIIXXXIV) are generally longer and more developed than those in the outer sections. Often, corresponding variations in the three sections have similar structures (for example, Variations I, XVIII, and XXXV are closely related). Lonesome Road (The Crawford Variations) was composed over the course of one year spent in Indonesia (June 1988June 1989). Like Ivess Concord Sonata (and Polanskys fluid piano writing will bring Ives to mind so many times!), Lonesome Road begins with some of its more difficult material. The second variations perpetual motion, with furious cross-rhythms of five against six and seven between the hands, may make you despair of finding clarity, but hold on. Variation III is the first of a series of chorales and waltzes that actually make the first of the three overall sections easier listening than the other two. Variation V is a thorny waltz, followed by a fun and not-too-complex variation that rips through parallel octaves. At Variation VII, the piece takes a turn toward more accessible territory. Variation VIII is the first in which the influence of Indonesian gamelanthe metallic percussion orchestra Polansky and his wife studied in Surakartais audible, this infusion of gamelan technique into piano playing being one of Lonesome Roads most original features. The patterns arent strictly repetitive, but they keep hitting the same notes over and over in a quirky kind of counterpoint.
Larry Polansky was born on October 16, 1954, in New York City, and grew up on the border of Queens and Nassau counties. His early ambitions as a jazz guitarist were eventually shed when he decided that he was more cut out to be a composer than a performer (though he still plays guitar publicly as well). Like so many in the 1970s he fled to the West Coast for a more liberal academic environment, where at the University of California at Santa Cruz he studied with James Tenney and Gordon Mumma, and became friends with Lou Harrison.

Album Details
Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.
Customer Reviews:
not enough Galway.......2003-10-02
There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.
Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03
I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

What ??.......2006-12-10
The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!
Nice Voice, but not a nice person...(read on, pls.).......2006-01-07
Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!
A let down.......2004-09-24
I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.
The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19
This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

disappointing.......2006-09-28
Being a new fan to bluegrass and discovering the awesome talent that is in this musical field, one of my favorite groups has been Lonesome River Band. I enjoy their fresh, fired up style and aweome lyrics, along with great production. Buying and bringing this CD, The Road With No End, home was exciting as I was anticipating yet another on target selection of songs and music. I am very, very disappointed ... the lyrics are rather childish and lack-luster/weak (some bordering on plain old silly), and the music itself is boring and terribly uninspired.
I don't know what happened to the group with this project ... perhaps they have lost their desire to put out top knotch bluegrass, or perhaps they are just as tired and worn out as this CD sounds? Perhaps they rotate members too much to make a solid cohesion of talent? Whatever the trouble is, this CD is disappointing to say the least.
I reccommed Windows Of Time, Head On Into The Heartache, or perhaps Talkin' To Myself ... but leave The Road With No End on the shelf.

look up, look down, look away.......2003-05-25
In the 1970s, as the success of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's acclaimed collaboration Will the Circle Be Unbroken took his name outside the small folk clubs and into the larger world, Doc Watson embarked on a number of what would be, by his standards, "commercial" recordings. That means he tried a full-band sound, not excluding drums, and -- while never entirely abandoning traditional music -- expanded his repertoire to include more modern country songs and rhythmic blues. At the time I recall being less than enchanted with the results. Now, though, as this material is being reissued on CD, I hear it with new ears, and it's better than I remembered it. For one thing, it showcases Merle's tasty slide-guitar playing, and that is never a bad thing.
The first of the two reissued albums here, Lonesome Road, is an overlooked gem, nicely produced by Billy Vaughn, with some memorable performances. My favorite cuts are the acoustic blues-rocker reading of the 1920s "Minglewood Blues" and the spare, reflective version of the traditional Appalachian lament "Look Up Look Down That Lonesome Road." Though the latter recalls the sound of earlier Folkways and Vanguard recordings and thus is atypical of the rest of the fare, it underscores Doc's mastery of pure Southern folk music. He and Merle (who would die tragically in 1985) engagingly take on Mississippi John Hurt's "My Creole Belle" and the sardonic, downhome-boy-in-the-big-city "Broomstraw Philosophers and Scuppernong Wine."
The second record, Look Away!, isn't quite as good. The song choice isn't as consistently satisfying as on Lonesome Road. On the other hand, there's nothing obnoxious or embarrassing or unlistenable, though Mac McAnally's "It's a Crazy World" is as banal as anything the Watsons ever recorded. More happily, "'Rangement Blues" and the instrumental "Under the Double Eagle" show us the Watsons in top form.
Missing gems from Doc & Merle.......2003-01-23
Two somewhat atypical Doc & Merle albums from the late '70s, originally released on the United Artists label. 1977's On "Lonesome Road" the bluegrass legends use ...gasp!... a snare drum set on most tracks, which creates an overt link to the world of rock'n'roll (where they definitely had a few fans!). This album was a bit ungainly, but it's always nice to hear Doc indulging his bluesy side. "Look Away," from 1978, sheds the drums, but keeps the alt.country attitude, and is, in the final analysis, a pleasant little surprise... one of the overlooked gems in Watson's back catalog, as a matter of fact. I've always been partial to Doc's versions of "You Two-Timed Me Once Too Often" and " 'Rangement Blues," both of which used to be played all the time on KFAT, back in the good old days. I'm pretty pleased to see these two albums back in print on CD!

This album consists of recordings Paul Robeson made in Britain durong the 1920s. He is accompanied by the great pianist Lawrence Brown or by a small orchestra led by Ray Noble. The songs on this disc are spirituals or pop songs of the era, and Robeson shines on every one of them. Robeson has an uncanny ability to make any song his own property, and this is especially true on his version of "Little Pal" - originally a saccharine semi-racist ballad written for Al Jolson. Robeson turns the song into a searing lament of an estranged father, and makes the song valid even today with his urgent, committed delivery. The majority of the songs on the cd are spirituals, and Robeson's versions are definitive in every sense of the word. All in all, there isn't a bad track here, and as an introduction to Robeson's work the record is priceless. The only aspect worth criticizing is the fact that the liner notes seem to shy away from the fact that Robeson was the first important black artist to actively fight for civil rights. The music here, however, is extremely beautiful.
