This record presents an unfamiliar corner of the cello repertoire in an excellent, persuasive performance. It includes Saint-Saëns's two cello sonatas, as well as his perhaps most popular piece, The Swan, in two different versions: the original one and the arrangement by Leopold Godowsky for violin and piano, played here on the cello an octave lower. The first, better known sonata, Op. 32, has a tense, dramatic first movement; the slow movement is a simple chorale melody accompanied by short notes; the finale is a run-around. Indeed, fleet passagework is a major element of Saint-Saëns's style. The second sonata, Op. 123, opens with forceful assertiveness; then, in constant mood changes, becomes delicate and lyrical. The second movement is a scherzo with variations in many contrasting moods and characters. A simple, effusively expressive romanza is followed by a gracious, ardently songful finale. The original Swan, meant to be played with harp accompaniment, is simple, pensive, and touching; Godowsky's arrangement, with an elaborate piano part and all sorts of bravura feats and sound effects from the cello, turns it into a big bird of prey. Saint-Saëns, considered one of the greatest pianists of his day, gave both his violin and cello sonatas enormous, virtuosic piano parts; Forsberg plays them to perfection, brilliantly but not soloistically, and with just the right blend of steadiness and freedom. Lidström's tone is warm and beautiful, and he can vary and inflect it with bow and vibrato; his style is noble and restrained but expressive and involved. --Edith Eisler

Any new compilation CD starring Yo-Yo Ma is certain to please. This master of the cello takes the listener through so many types of music that the ear and mind never tire. The present selection is billed as a sort of "musical autobiography," and, indeed, it gives us a tour of Ma's musical life. The Silk Road Project is represented by Zhao's "Swallow Song," with its eerie, fascinating soundscape (specially re-recorded for this CD). We also accompany Ma on his excursions into the world of the baroque cello with Vivaldi or of the Finnish folk song (by Mamiya, a first recording). There are Gershwin's languid Second Prelude, with its intimations of the song "Summertime," and an all-new recording of a nine-minute heart-breaker by Astor Piazzolla ("Soledad"). Ma also gives us more familiar Brahms, Franck, and Saint-Saens. The compilation's mellow 65 minutes offer relaxing, beautiful music, all exquisitely played. Ma is joined by the best: Emanuel Ax, Kathryn Stott, John Williams (who plays piano on his own "Going to School" from Memoirs of a Geisha), Isaac Stern, and Claudio Abbado. With a little help of some of his friends Yo Yo Ma offered us another of his masterpieces. No other title could define better the tracks selection, pleasant and inspired.

Yo Yo Ma is simply fantastic, and has arrived as such a height of recognition that any production he is invovled in will be top of the line, as this is.

This is a darker collection than I expected. And like a serious, reserved friend, it can take a little longer to appreciate than the bubbly outgoing ones. I now find I like it very much, but it is serious "conversation."

There is great variety here as well, and I gave it to a friend's teenager who is considering whether she wants to learn the cello. Her response was much the same as mine. Initially not so sure, but over time, has really come to like it, too. This collection has great depth.

(4.5/5 stars) This is a two-disc collection of musical works, in which the great cellist Jacqueline du Pre plays. The first disc consists of three cello concerti by three different composers: Dvorak (Romantic), Haydn (Classical) and Elgar (Romantic). Very good music, though it might leave you wondering what all the fuss is about. Not to worry: just pop in Disc Two to find out. The second disc contains shorter works by a wider variety of composers. It also might just leave you breathless by its beauty. Saint-Säens' "The Swan" (from "Carnival of the Animals") is nearly indescribable in its elegance, with du Pre's cello dancing with a harp. This haunting recording should not be missed. Bruch's "Kol Nidrei" is magnificently gorgeous as well. Three fantasy pieces from Schumann, one of Mendelssohn's "Lieder Ohne Wörter" and a stunning Brahms sonata infuse this collection with genuine grace. Since these were recorded prior to the advent of digital recordings, you might hear a very slight hiss on some of the recordings. This is barely audible and really does not detract from the pleasure of listening to it. Each disc runs 75 minutes, making this inspiration last long indeed.

As a cellist, I grew up listening to Jacqueline Du Pre's recordings. Even now as a 35 year old, I'm still enthralled by her amazing talent. This is a great cd if one is looking for a wonderful introduction to this superb cellist or simply wants to savor her most well known recordings. Du Pre owned the "Elgar" concerto. No other words can summarize this fact. Other beautiful and moving pieces are here on this disc: Bruch "Kol Nidrei", Haydn "Concerto No.2", Faure "Elegie", Brahms "Concerto No.2". The cello is a difficult instrument to play due to the strength required in both hands. Du Pre's playing touches the heartstrings with both emotion and depth. The tone that she coaxes from her cello is amazing. Jacqueline Du Pre is a legend.

Epitome of Cello.......2006-06-23

As a cellist, I absolutely love du Pré's work. I actually found this CD when I was looking for a modern recording of "A Jacqueline du Pré Recital", a record compiled of pieces done between July 15, 1962 and April 1, 1969. The second CD in this set contains the same songs as that record.

The concertos on the first CD are spectacular, especially her rendition of the Elgar concerto which has defined the piece since she first performed it. The second CD, however, is just as wonderful as a collection of some of the most loved cello pieces. No cello recording complete without Saint Saen's "The Swan" and du Pré's version is the only one I've ever heard that I actually like. "Elégie in C minor" (composed by Gabriel Fauré) is one of my personal favorites especially since her rapport with the pianist is obvious and the two instruments blend in a way that makes the piece even more poignant.

Overall, this CD is a must-have for anyone who loves cello as a perfect sample of Jacqueline du Pré's work.

As far as the romantic period goes, Jacqueline Du Pre is my personal favorite 'cellist. Her sensitivity to put expression of the musical idea always outweighed the desire to appear impressive. There is a difference in being just a virtuoso and being a musician. A virtuoso has the capability to dazzle and amaze, but music is more than just being impressive, and Du Pre succeeds in becoming, in every sense, a musician first and foremost. The only complaint I have of this album is the fact that you only get one movement of each piece! Even so, this a wonderful "sample dish" of Du Pre's extraordinary playing, mainly meant to get you hooked so you can get more.

I think this music is intended for adults, though the photo on the cover is of a sleeping baby. In any event, Schumann's work, Scenes From Childhood, Op. 15, featured here is more likely to bolt you out of bed than put you to sleep, as the mike is far too close to the piano being played by Cyprien Katsaris. Purcell's Adagio from The Indian Queen is magnificent, performed by John Elliott Gardiner and the English Baroque Soloists. The Weird Award goes to triple harpist Tim Hobrough and lutenist Stephen Barber for their bizarre, spiky rendition of Minuets Nos. 4 and 5 from the Notebook of Anna Magdalena Bach. I would like to meet Bill Holland, producer of all these Atlantic Records classical compilations. He's programmed Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1 on three different CDs, billed alternately as sensuous, romantic, and now here: good for a long snooze. --Gwendolyn Freed

I purchased this CD on the basis of the reviews written on Amazon. I have to say I am terribly disappointed. My son hates the CD, I listened to it and I am not all that impressed either. It is ok but nothing like described by other users.

We play this cd every night at bedtime. It not only helps my baby stay asleep, but helps me fall asleep. The only issue I have is that one of the tracks near the end of the cd is a little louder than the tracks before it, so I just make sure I keep it on very quiet and it's wonderful.

My girls (ages 3 & 5) have a hard time winding down at night. We have a regular bedtime routine (bath, snack, teeth brushing, books, hugs), but they still take forever to settle down and sleep. Adding this CD to the bedtime routine has really helped.

I had this CD when my daughter was born 5 years ago, and it gave us such a soothing environment in which to bond during quiet times. We also put it on shortly before we'd put her down to sleep, and by 6 weeks she was sleeping through the night in her own crib. I think it was her sanctuary, and the music helped her feel comforted. We've since then completely worn out the CD (she listened to it through her 3rd year), and will have to buy a new one for our next little addition (coming soon!). I found it on this site and just listened to the samples from each track. Aahhh... very soothing for Mommy, too!
I also plan to get it as a baby gift for a friend. :)

I listened to this CD countless times ever since I first bought it from BMG music service back in 1997. Compositions of this CD are popular classical hits. That is, you will likely recognize at least some of them if you listen to the sampler.

What sets this CD apart is supreme music performance. Every composition is performed flawlessly, with real feeling and passion. There is a good reason why this CD that was released in 1997 is still around and costs over ten dollars. This reason is called quality.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

Elegance and precision.......2007-06-30

The theramin is, without question, the most difficult instrument in the world to play. Consider: since its invention in 1928 and commercial release in the early 1930s, only one musician - Clara Rockmore - has been able to produce any real music on it. Her performances are spellbinding and, if one sometimes years for, say, a whole sonata or something more substantial than encore pieces, think of how difficult it is to play ANYTHING on this instrument and be glad that we at least have this much.

A one-of-a-kind disc of a one-of-a-kind performer. If you like the samples you can hear on this site. by all means buy it.

Mysterious, magical, and a little bit maudlin.......2007-03-08

I recently went through a theremin phase after seeing the documetary "Theremin: An Electronic Oddysey" which featured Clara Rockmore prominently. That led me to buy this recording, which seems to be the traditional standard of classical theremin artistry. The story around the instrument is even more bizzare than the music it makes: spooky Cold-War intrigue, sudden disappearances in New York and the USSR, spy gadgets, dead men found alive, old friends reuniting after decades of separation and obscurity... it all fits the eerie ethos of the music. So to really "get" the instrument, you need to know the story behind it. That's the maudlin part.

While the rest of my family violently disagrees, this is indeed lovely music. A careful listening to Mrs. Rockmore's technique reveals, I think, that she's fascinatingly far beyond waving her hands up and down in front of antennas. She makes glissandos and runs happen with discrete pitches in a way that is hard for me to picture on an instrument that can generate any pitch, and every pitch in between. She developed a way to "finger" an instrument you don't touch. That's why it's magical.

A note on the recording: the timbre of the theremin seems to land in a resonant frequency range on most systems/speakers on which I have listened to this recording, leading to the solo instrument badly overbalancing the piano accompaniment.

PS: I have given on someday owning a theremin. Phase over.

Hypnotically Beautiful.......2007-02-28

Classical music, and specifically Theremin music, is not normally my favored listening. But I took a chance on this disc and am very glad I did. Clara Rockmore's mastery of her instrument is astonishing. The music is tastefully chosen and very beautiful. She often mimics violin or human voice in her phrasing, but subtly gives the theremin its own voice and proves its suitability for classical.

I knocked a star off for the lack of arrangement-diversity, but I have to admit that I usually listen to this disc from start to end. Its lyrical qualities are very transfixing and hypnotic. A welcome diversification to my music collection!

I HAVE HAD THIS CD FOR YEARS AND HAVE NEVER GOTTEN TIRED OF HEARING IT, ALTHOUGH YOU HAVE TO BE IN THE RIGHT MOOD TO REALLY APPRECIATE WHAT YOU ARE HEARING. THIS IS THE PREEMINENT THERMEIN RECORDING, BY THE PREEMINENT THEREMIN PERFORMER, CLARA ROCKMORE. HAUNTING, STRANGE, HYPNOTIC, YET MELODICAL, THE THERMEIN IS A VERY DIFFICULT INSTRUMENT TO PLAY, AND CLARA ROCKMORE WAS THE ONLY PERSON TO EVER REALLY "MASTER" IT. IF YOU WANT TO HEAR THEREMIN MUSIC, I GUESS THIS IS THE ONE CD YOU NEED TO GET.

We love this C.D.!.......2005-04-03

We received the Baby Cello C.D. as a gift, and my husband and I just love it. The music is truly moving in the most uplifting way, and the songs chosen are just beautiful; not at all stuffy. The true test was when our two-year-old, who had not had a nap all day, got completely wired and still would not go to sleep after 10 p.m. She screamed for 20 minutes as we tried to get her down, until I put Baby Cello on, and the screaming stopped instantaneously! She went to sleep to the C.D. without another wimper! We highly recommend Baby Cello for parents and babies alike, and have bought it for other parents with babies that we know. It uplifts, as well as soothes, depending upon what time of day we put it on, and it serves as wonderful dinner music as well. We can't imagine anyone not loving this C.D.! A.and J. Pieri, Albany,CA

I am so pleased with Baby Cello. The sound of this music is utterly glorious. Soothing doesn't begin to describe it. My 2 year old and I love listening to it at all times of day.

The cello has often been called the king of string instruments because its range encompasses all four vocal registers. Nevertheless, cellists are always complaining of the comparative paucity of their literature, and feel justified in raiding more fertile fields. Even Yo-Yo Ma, who has enriched the repertoire by commissioning a considerable number of new works and exploring the native music of different continents, cannot resist the temptation to engage in a little poaching. On this record, he performs four staples of the violin literature in transcriptions for cello, three of them his own. They are linked by their supposed influence on the French writer Marcel Proust and his famous novel, In Search of Lost Time, and take us to early 20th-century Paris, where Ma was born of Chinese parents five decades later. Naturally, the transcriptions do not work equally well. All retain the original keys and leave the piano parts intact; perhaps in an effort to reproduce the violin's bright tone-color, they also retain the original pitch for long stretches. This exploits the cello's "soprano" voice, but though Ma handles the stratospheric register masterfully, even he cannot make it sound natural, so it always comes as a relief when he lets his instrument sound like a real cello in its "tenor" or "bass" voice. Highlights are the Fauré A-major Sonata and the Saint-Saëns Havanaise: charming and elegant, the former is thoroughly romantic, exuberant and sunny; the latter captures the atmosphere and Spanish idiom brilliantly. You probably have to be a cellist to like the famous, nameless transcription of the Franck Sonata; the performance is a bit excessive in tempo, dynamics and rhythmic freedom. Visions of 19th-century Paris.......2006-03-03

Paris at the turn of the century was glorious and enjoying its "Golden Age" with music and the arts taking center stage in society. This was the age of Paris' grand architectural plan, the Eiffel Tower, the revolutionary poets and writers, the Impressionist painters Monet and Renoir, Toulouse Lautrec and the Moulin Rouge. No less prominent were the famous musical talents of the day: Saint-Saens, Massenet, Franck, Faure, Chausson, Debussy, d'Indy and later Ravel. There was a strong interconnectedness of these composers and many were dearly loved teachers. Faure owed his learning to Saint-Saens ... Debussy was mentored by Chausson who learned under Franck. Most retained respect and admiration for classical forms (shunning the fashionable Wagnerian influences) while Debussy went his own way with totally new innovations. Faure's music was the most "quintessential French" with its clarity, poise and moderation. Together, these composers restored the prominance of instrumental music in France that had been dominated by opera. In doing so they also defined a truly "French" romanticism - one with sensuous tonalities, rich chromatic textures and a passionate lyricism.

This CD features four of the more famous Parisian compositions of this magical era, but transcribed to cello. I noticed some music critics gave this CD scathing reviews (like David Hurwitz of ClassicsToday), citing major "issues" with such transcriptions such as "tonality incongruencies" with the cello here for music written explicitly for violin and piano. Additionally, complaints were leveled at the cellist for "an overly sweet and precious style." Well, after revisiting this CD recently, it puzzles me what's the bone of contention here. Yo-Yo Ma is no amatuer in his field nor does he lack refined taste or deep musical sense. His artistry and technical ability are extremely high, and his poised, astute playing is mezmerizing to watch in concert. In contrast to such overly-academic criticism, Gramophone had very positive reviews for this CD which matched what my ears heard and did not take such a "purist" line downgrading such transcriptions to paltry art. Perhaps, some have a sour taste for the marketing machine Ma is under by his promoters. But, the good side of recordings widely marketed like this one is that it makes classical music more "accessible" to the average person shopping at Borders Books. Ma is truly a "people's musician" who is approachable, understandable and satisfying to experience. People not inclined to purchase classical music will buy one of his CD's like this one because of these qualities or a promotion - and that seems a good thing.

Regardless of one's perpective on transcriptions, Yo-Yo Ma brings great artistry and technical precision in these attractive recordings. The cellist has a strong resonance with this music as he learned the cello and these French compositions while living in Paris in his youth. In them, his style is unashamedly "honey-toned," lyrical and romantically expressive, but the average listener should enjoy such qualities just fine. Case-in-point: his buttery warmth and effortless, songful flow in the last movement of the Franck Sonata is pure musical elegance. On the technical side, Ma's passage work especially in the high registers here is quite remarkable - clean, quicksilver and with faultless intonation. His lines are elegant, his control as good any and his phrasing imbued with an extraordinary emotional depth. While still admiring the violin versions of all these works, I was most refreshed with the change to cello here with its more earthy and irresistably sensuous tone.

More should be said about Kathryn Stott who has focused her career on the French Romantic repertoire and brings a wealth a experience to these readings. Right from the opening first two bars of Faure's Sonata, she sets an exciting expectation with some deft running semiquavers that does not disappoint throughout. Her crisp and competant pianism shines the brightest in the first and third movement of the Faure Sonata and the scherzo of the Franck Sonata which glimmer. At times her piano is not as prominent in the mix compared to Ma's forwardly-miked cello which can often dominate the balance. But, I think this is more her "laying back" in many of the movements in support of Ma more than sound engineering. But, when the spotlight is one her, she sparkles. Regardless, the overall sound is bold and vivid so this balance aspect is a minor issue that should not preclude a pleasurable listening experience.

So, in total, Ma and Stott present to us the glamorous, musically sensuous world of Paris prior to the turn of the century in this fine recitial. If you had to pick some of the most beautiful chamber pieces from this era, all of these featured here would make the list. I really enjoyed these pieces and the refined playing of Ma and Stott - even if the cello is not "the right instrument." Commpositions - 5 stars, Performance - 4.5 stars, Sound quality - 4.5 stars. For those interested in superb reference recordings of the two violin sonatas in A-major: Kyung-Wha Chung (vn) and legendary pianist Radu Lupu on Decca is the top choice for Franck's Sonata. For the Faure Sonata, the Naxos disc by Kang/Devoyon is really dynamic and full of romantic verve. Both are highly recommended to further explore this wonderful genre.

Another MA Masterpiece.......2004-03-15

Yo Yo Ma once again proves why he is one of the premier cellists playing today. He has taken 4 works for violin and transormed them into works for cello. Although not totally successful, he shows very fast fingers and where the notes fit the more natural sound of the cello, he soars. But what makes this CD so delightful is the piano playing of Katherine Schott - together they make beautiful music. Nice change of pace for a cello CD.

Yo-Yo Ma is unquestionably one of the most fascinating performers of classical music active today. He is possessed of a ferocious technique, innate musicality and a vast imagination. From his Silk Road project to his collaborations with artists from Bobby McFerrin to Tan Dun, he always seeks new and fascinating ventures. Consisting of four French pieces from the late Nineteenth Century, La Belle Epoque is not as unique as some of his undertakings but it does have its own special twist. These pieces were originally written for violin-and for Ma to perform them flawlessly on cello with its much larger fingerboard, thicker strings, and more difficult technique is amazing. That he does so in a way that is so convincing throughout is nearly miraculous.

Sonatas by Gabriel Faure and Cesar Frank are the most substantial works on the disc. The Faure in particular is a delight, with its exuberant third movement and introspective second. Complementing these sonatas are the Meditation from Jules Massenet's opera Thais and Camille Saint-Saens' Havanaise. Ma's interpretation of the Massenet work is truly intense and Romantic, but not always meditative. His control of the line, in every aspect, from dynamics to tempo to vibrato shows him a master of the musical phrase. Pianist Kathryn Stott matches Ma superbly throughout every turn.
