These are good performances of Dvorák's two most popular symphonies, but they come into direct competition with Rafael Kubelík's standard-setting performances on DG with the very same orchestra, and in that respect they simply fail to measure up. Consumers are faced with an embarrassment of riches in this music, and there's simply no reason not to go for the best, particularly when price is not an issue. So unless you are a major Karajan fan, go for Kubelík. --David Hurwitz

Mega-Sampler! This really does have 99 tracks!.......2002-03-20

If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

How is the Sixth Symphony Overlooked So Often?.......2001-04-24

The 8th Symphony has always been a very favorite of mine in the symphonic repetoire. With its very hummable melodies and terrific finale, it never ceases to impress me as one of the truly fun and great symphonies. Owning six different recordings of this symphony has helped me discern what I like in this symphony over what I don't like. This recording ranks up among my favorites. Particularly, the finale. The french horns are allowed to shine in this movement and they are some of the finest french horn players you'll hear on record.

Dvorak's Eighth is his second most popular symphony behind his ubiquitous New World symphony. It has all the gorgeous melodies you'd expect from Dvorak, but this time Gunzenhauser does not give us a top notch performance. The first movement is too relaxed and the climax of the development section is not powerful enough to make a strong impact. The same criticisms apply to the second movement, which needs more impetus. However, Gunzenhauser's relaxed conducting works well in the third movement, which flows naturally and gracefully. The famous finale is also quite well done, though once again it's slightly reserved and this detracts from the overall excitement. Nonetheless, this disc can be recommended to those looking for super bargain recordings of these works, especially since the Fourth is played wonderfully and the sound is warm and natural throughout. For those looking for a superior digital recording of the Eighth, however, this is not the disc you want. Rather, the top recommendation for it is Christoph von Donhanyi's recording with the Cleveland Orchestra on Decca, one of his finest accomplishments.

The eighth symphony, full of wonderful melodies is again well presented on this disc. The engineering of Gunzenhauser's Dvorak cycle affords the listener the rare opportunity to hear woodwind playing that is rarely ever heard on any CD. The playing for this work is spirited, delicate and never underminds the balance of timbre Dvorak incoporated into his score. What a terrific CD!!!

The answer: consistently magical performances, captured in brilliant golden-age stereo sound, that offer a slightly different take on your typical interpretation of the great works. While MLP titles may not offer the best standard account of a work, they always surprise you and open you up to all the possibilities that the music has to offer. For example, this performance of Dvorak's 7th and 8th Symphonies by Dorati may not be the consensus first choice recording -- that would probably be the Szell or Kubelik as Mr. Hurwitz suggested above. But I constantly come back to this disc for a different perspective, and its vibrancy and splendor never disappoint me. Maybe that is why collectors prize these recordings, because they offer refreshment in a homogenized world of listening. Of course, collectors love a challenge too, and MLP CDs are becoming increasingly hard to find. It has taken years for me to finally find all of the MLP CDs released to date, and unfortunately I don't think there will be any new releases forthcoming. So collectors, and even those who aspire to be, should pick up as many Mercury Living Presence discs as possible now, before they all die.
