Another Stunner!.......2005-12-17
This CD contains cues and snippets of music from two documentary films, both apparently released in 1999: ATOMIC JOURNEYS and NUKES IN SPACE. (Don't let the bizarre and uninviting titles of these documentaries off put you from getting the CD!) There are 42 tracks of which about 25% are less than 60 seconds in duration (the longest track clocks in at a hair over three minutes). I mention this only to emphasize that this recording meshes these musical bits and pieces into a concert (or two) like few (or any) others. It/they hold listeners' ears jammed to their speakers. Even those with 15-second attention spans! And often left out of breath. There are more brilliant, disturbing, and addictive themes packed in here than those, say, in the typical Eric Wolfgang Korngold film score. And Korngold was a master of thematic composition. Another tour de force for composer and conductor William Stromberg and the orchestration team helmed by John Morgan. There is no CD-music booklet--a MAJOR disappointment. Instead you'll find a glossy cross-marketing insert that primarily hypes these and another documentary made by the same director, the director himself, and the director's company. Reads like part of a press kit (which it probably was). This is the second of two related CDs. The other is TRINITY AND BEYOND, VCECD 01 2004. Both highly recommended!
