If there is a disc that typifies the extraordinary Chandos sound--as well as the superb performances they get from their orchestras and conductors--it is this release of Sir Arthur Bliss's A Colour Symphony and his "Checkmate" Suite. These are two of the most listener-friendly compositions of this century. A Colour Symhpony virtually made Bliss's reputation in 1922, the year of its premier. Its movements suggest purple for pomp, red for revelry and courage, blue for deep water and loyalty, and green for youth. Did I mention that this piece is colorful and fun? Duh. --Paul Cook
