About the Artist
JACKSON BERKEY

As a musical artist, Jackson Berkey defies designation. Composer, performer, recording artist and producer, solo artist ... the range of his musical endeavours and accomplishments combine with a depth of talent that is formidable indeed. His sparkling debut recital in New York's Town Hall launched a remarkable and highly varied career.

Although Jackson's musical foundation lies in the classical, sacred, and chamber genre as a result of his advanced degree study at the famous Juilliard School, he is perhaps best known for his performances as the featured keyboard artist with Mannheim Steamroller. The grammy award-winning group's seven Fresh Aire albums have all won critical acclaim. Their American Gramaphone Christmas albums Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, A Fresh Aire Christmas and Christmas in the Aire have all gone triple platinum. As a solo artist with both American Gramaphone and SDG Records, Jackson remains close to his classical roots. His earlier recorded releases Sunken Cathedral, Ballade, and 109 featured compelling performances of classical piano works by Scriabin, Beethoven, Debussy, Rachmaninoff and Persichetti. That pursuit now continues with his performances on the American Gramaphone Dayparts series with works by Scarlatti, Debussy, Beethoven, Chopin and Liszt. The Holiday Musik series offers exciting performances of Harpsichord Sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti and Preludes of J. S. Bach. The groups newest release is 25 Year Celebration of Mannheim Steamroller. Jackson's SDG Records releases The Mountains and The Sea and Berkey Meets Horowitz on the 503 offer performances of original solo keyboard and instrumental works from his published catalog.

An accomplished composer, Jackson Berkey now offers a sizable published catalog which includes solo, chamber, orchestral, symphonic band and choral works in varying genre. Together with his wife Almeda - herself a distinguished conductor, vocalist, and librettist - the couple founded SDG Press to publish and distribute their compositions and arrangements. SDG Records also features their music as recorded by Nebraska's Professional Chorale, Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum, under Almeda's direction. CD/Cassette releases with the Cantorum include Arma Lucis The Armour of Light, the Christmas album Gaudete The Natural State of Man is Joy, The Mountains and The Sea, Arvo the Magnificat, Jackson Berkeys American Shadows, and Cantorum Christmas! Each of these recordings features works written by Jackson Berkey. Throughout this catalog, works which are recorded are indicated by the CD symbol.

Many of Jackson's compositions and arrangements are in the sacred genre, several being extended works for mixed chorus, soloists and instruments. These include the Christmas cantatas The Glory of His Majesty and The Eternal Life; the Christmas Anniversary Carols; the Easter Celebration Come, Follow Me!; the South Dakota bicentennial works South Dakota Shadows and South Dakota Shadows Suite (treble voices); the 1996 Commission Thoughts and Remembrances; the extended a cappella work Arma Lucis; and the compelling Native American Ambiances.

An ASCAP award-winning composer, Jackson's catalog of works is gaining wide acceptance and receiving many fine performances. He was given top honors with the 1999 Nebraska Individual Artist Fellowship for Performing Arts, Distinguished Achievement in Composition Award. In the same year he received First Prize in the New Music for Young Ensembles Composition Contest in New York City. His winning composition Piano Trio Kassarjian will be performed in one of the major New York City halls during the 1999-2000 concert season. His sacred choral works have been performed and recorded by the Luther College Nordic Choir, the Singing Statesmen of the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, the Seattle Girls' Choir (Jackson Berkey Meets the Seattle Girls Choir), the Omaha Cantata Choir, Nebraska's Professional Chorale Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum, the Seattle Choral Company, the Sacramento Master Singers, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. His symphonic band setting of The Battle Cry of Freedom was commissioned and recorded by the "U. S. Air Combat Command Heartland of America Band". Berkey's Mass Over a Period of Time was initiated in 1994. The Gloria is a 35-minute work in seven movements. The Credo, also an extended section, will be structured much like the Arvo Prt TeDeum. With each successive movement being written on commission from differing choral sources, it is anticipated that the Mass will be completed by the year 2002.

Jackson Berkey earned his Masters degree at the Juilliard School in New York City and has appeared on the artist roster of Baldwin Piano and Organ Company for more than two decades. His background also includes studies at the Chautauqua Institute; Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York; Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; and Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, where he was born.

Solo Piano Works from Jackson Berkeys
Sabbatical at Colvmns by the Sea
Cape May, New Jersey 1999

The easiest way to reach Cape May, NewJersey is by ferry from the east in Lewes, Delaware; or from the north via the New Jersey Garden State Parkway. I generally fly into Philadelphia, so the latter route is always taken. There is no exit for Cape May on the Garden State Parkway. The Parkway simply turns into the only road over the only bridge into Cape May. A strange jog, seemingly in the wrong direction, puts you on the right street to get to the Colvmns. (Yes, it is a v, part of the registered trademark for the Inn.)

Even when the small southern New Jersey city of Cape May is busy, it is quiet at the Victorian Bed and Breakfast known for almost a hundred years as Colvmns By The Sea. Located in what is called East Cape May the quiet section of town, even during high season my Lady Almeda and I first stayed at the Colvmns in October of 1998. During that first encounter, some acquaintances there spoke with great enthusiasm about their accomodations. On seeing their room, I immediately knew why: Room 9 is a very large room with four windows overlooking the Atlantic coast. Because of Cape Mays peculiar southeastern exposure to the Atlantic, both sunrise and sunset can be seen from the room, and its windows open wide to let in the seas air and sound.

With Room 9 in mind, I decided to return to the Colvmns the following January to write a commission that I had received for the 1999 SingLadySing International Choral Festival in Seattle. As fate would have it, the commission was moved back to 2001. But with my plans already firmly in mind at the time, I proceeded to go to the Colvmns to write LUltima Amor The Greatest Love. Somehow I knew immediately that this was the place for me to complete this commission.

During my first hibernation at Colvmns By The Sea, I discovered a few other interesting facts: the city is almost deserted during this time of year, her residents more than ready for some quiet time following the busy influx of visitors during Christmas and New Years. Few eating establishments remain open, and most of those offer service only on the weekend. Only occasionally does one see other people. For me, it was a state of supreme quiet, accompanied by the sound of the sea and interrupted only by my thoughts.

This Cape May solitude also brought forth my song cycle about baseball Open the Window Aunt Minnie, Here She Comes! as well as this first set of Cape May Preludes (Im already writing the second set.) The Preludes were written in response to the many feelings I experienced during my stay. They are about the vastly changing weather, the people and the animals encountered during this, my first writing sabbatical at the Colvmns on the Atlantic coast.

5 out of 5 stars Sheer Bliss and complete respect for this work........2004-12-30

After listening to the CD....I was mesmerized as usual by Mr. Berkey's innovative compositions, by his applied knowledge of
the capabilities of the sounds and potential of the piano, and other sound effects....and under his wisdom this CD exceeds expectations. I have used the CAPE MAY PRELUDES in my career as a piano teacher, even found the pieces unique for competitions.
(My students did well with these pieces at competitions and recitals). The have more energy and practice more with Mr. Berkey's compositions. When one looks at the articulation and
notation of the pieces, one understands the CD in a different way. As if you are treated to the height of musical adventure.
Mr. Berkey, gifted, talented, and quite possibly the next Beethoven that I believe the world has been waiting for.....
also has a way of sharing his time, talents and making dreams come true.
Don't just sit there...trust me...I know what I"m talking about....go purchase this CD now.....you won't regret it.
I'm not going to get into descriptions of the piece, get the book as well and see it through Mr. Berkey's eyes....and then think for yourself as well.
