Copland: Concerto for piano; Menotti: Concerto for piano in F
Editorial Reviews

I once heard Copland play his own Piano Concerto, an incomparably jazzy performance. Now, I'd rather hear Copland's own playing of the piece (Sony Classical SMK 60177) than anyone else's. But Copland obviously approved of Earl Wild's swinging performance, and he leads the Symphony of the Air (formerly the NBC Symphony) with gusto. Unfortunately, the remainder of the not-very-long CD is taken up with the only recording you're ever likely to hear of Menotti's awful Piano Concerto. This piece sounds mostly like quite bad movie music, slushy overstewed romanticism with peach sauce. I can't care how well the piece is played or recorded. --Leslie Gerber

Dazzling Menotti! An Undiscovered Gem!.......2005-06-23
It was through this recording I became acquainted with what is now one of my favorite works, the Menotti Piano Concerto. For anyone unfamiliar with the piece, do yourself a favor and grab a copy of this recording. Not a single person I have played it for has not had the pants charmed off of them by this delightful, and deceptively simple sounding work. This concerto presents serious rivalry to those by Prokofiev, Poulenc or Stravinsky. Instead of Rachmanninofian grandeur, Menotti sweeps through the work with polyphonic writing that recalls Scarlatti and Bach - offering both bravura and charm. Here, the great Earl Wild dazzles with his nimble fingered technique and sails through Menotti's difficult writing with an ease that is nothing short of mindboggling. Jorge Mester leads the Symphony of the Air through the paces admirably and everyone sounds as though they're having the time of their lives. So will you!
The Copland Concerto has its own charms, and is better known than the Menotti, however you may buy this recording for the Copeland, but you'll keep it for the Menotti! My highest recommendation.

Both Copland and Menotti seldom wrote in the concerto format and the first concerto they each wrote were for piano. (Copland's second concerto was for Benny Goodman in 1948.) Copland's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra is an early composition (1927) and in it you can hear the young composer's interest in jazz as well as a heavy influence of the bluesy side of Gershwin. This isn't the Copland everyone knows, but still worth your time. Gian Carlo Menotti's Concerto in F for Piano and Orchestra (1945) shows, in the piano, the influence of Scarlatti, bubbly as it is. Minor works, both, but fun. --Paul Cook
Customer Reviews:
Copland wonderful, Menotti virtuosic.......2007-07-19
The Copland piece is classic Copland, melodic, rhythmic with wonderful, grand chords. The only problem with the Copland piece is that it is too short - only two movements!!!... but hey... you can't have everything. The Menotti piece is more focused on the piano solo, which is very enjoyable.
