Evensong AND Vespers.......2006-07-10
After I bought this CD, I was surprised to find that just over half of it is Catholic Vespers, with lots of chanting. In fact, the first several tracks are just the men chanting. It's quite good, but not what fans of Kings often expect. But then when the full choir finally comes in, it's dramatic and beautiful, for lack of better words. And I doubt any words are adequate.
The other half is good Anglican Choral Evensong for Advent. That's actually what I expected the whole CD to be.
But you know what's funny? This Anglican has come to like the Vespers part better. I've actually gotten hooked on it. It's that good. I've listened to a lot of choral music, but have never heard anything quite like it.
The Vespers alone make this CD a must-get for choral church music fans.

A must!.......2005-09-26
One of the most beautiful, well-made choral CDs to be released anywhere in recent memory. A must for any choral enthusiast. Wonderfully fresh, gorgeous, and challenging program. One or two of the tracks, such as Busto's Ave Maria and Part's Magnificat are slightly below the choir's standard of excellence, but it is easy to forgive considering the incredible performances on the rest of the CD. The Penderecki, Houkom, and Paulus in particular are absolutely ravishing; I truly don't think choral singing has ever gotten closer to perfection.
dale warland singers.......2005-07-01
once again the dale warland singers have produced a recording of wonderful singing and terrific (while perhaps slightly obscure) repertoire. this eclectic recording of lesser-known choral works is truly worth purchasing. from the simplistic beauty of "little tree" to the fresh dissonances of "the rune of hospitality", this recording is a treasure. however, i would recommend it to those with an experience ear.
Very fine collection - well sung.......2003-06-12
At times I have not been terribly impressed with albums like this from American choirs, but this one is very good indeed. It's certainly an eclectic collection, including music from around the world. The singing is almost always exceptional, with some outstanding interpretations of the lesser-known works. My favourites would have to be the two settings of 'Ave Maria' by Stravinsky and Javier Busto (a Basque composer, who has developed a wonderful choral-writing style). Also of note are Part's 'Magnificat' and Poulenc's 'Quem Vidistes Pastores'.
I highly recommend this recording - as other reviewers have said, it's worth playing all year round (in New Zealand, the stillness is in July anyway - not December!).
One of the great choral recordings.......2002-04-20
Minneapolis-based conductor Dale Warland directs this superb chorus that specializes in 20th-century music. The collection here is an outstanding demonstration of the group's artistry, with some compositions by well-knowns such as Stravinsky and Arvo Prt, and others that are relatively unknown.
It's hard to choose favorites from such a line-up, but the vocal and artistic highlight for me is Penderecki's "Song of Cherubim" - an absolutely stunning piece sung with the precision that is one of the hallmarks of this group. Alf Houkom's "The Rune of Hospitality" has a gorgeous melody that resonated in my head for days afterward. I also like Trond Kverno's magnificent "Corpus Christi Carol," and Stephen Paulus' quietly moving "Evensong." But every single track is a gem, and throughout the program, this remarkable group demonstrates impeccable technique and ensemble unity.
American Choral Classics has done this project justice with sound of crystal clarity and presence. When coupled with such artistry, the result is one of the finest choral recordings I have ever heard.
Don't be deterred by the "holiday" nature of the collection. The music and the performances are of such a high caliber, you'll want to listen to it year-round.
Well-compiled and sung lesser-known works for the holidays........1999-08-27
This is a very well-conceived collection of mostly lesser-known choral gems for the holidays, combined with a few more famous selections. For years, Warland has championed the cause of otherwise obscure choral works, as well as choral composers whose works deserve a broader audience. The benefit to these composers, their works, and the discerning listener, is the consummate professionalism, musicianship, artistry, and craftsmanship with which Dale Warland, his singers, and even the recording engineers and technicians lend to their album projects.
As a former student of Dr. Alf S. Houkom, composer of "The Rune of Hospitality" (found on this recording), and a choral conductor myself, I rejoiced in the knowledge that this work, and others like it, are finally getting the exposure, as well as the professional treatment, that they so richly deserve. Bravo, Mr. Warland, and thank you for the gift of this album. This is truly in the spirit of the season.

Gorgeous pastoral music.......2007-03-04
I first heard of Amazing Blondel when Island released their 40th Anniversary compilation CDs in 1999; Blondel were featured on Vol. 3: Acoustic Waves 1968-1975 with the gorgeous "Pavan," which is the leadoff track on Evensong. After listening a few times, the song really grew on me, and I knew I owed it to myself to check out this group. I can tell you now, it's well worth the effort.
Amazing Blondel were formed in late 1969 when John Gladwin and Terry Wincott left the heavy rock band Methuselah, after working an acoustic set into that group's performances and finding it went down well. Pursuing their muse, they recorded an album for Bell Records, Amazing Blondel & A Few Faces, which was more a sort of general acoustic folk-rock and on which they had the assistance of a number of well-travelled British session musicians (among them Big Jim Sullivan and Clem Cattini). A couple of tracks on that album hinted at the Elizabethan direction their music would take next, when Eddie Baird joined them during 1970. At the suggestion of Andy Fraser from Free, they scheduled an audition at Island Records, which apparently had showed some interest in them; they played "Spring Song" for Chris Blackwell, and when they finished, he asked them how much of an advance they wanted. They got enough for a new PA and a new equipment van, and they set about recording Evensong, of which "Pavan" and "Spring Song" are some of the highlights. This is beautiful acoustic music, on which the three men play between them a total of 40 instruments, and this was their modus operandi in performance as well as in the studio. (In fact, it was no secret that getting all those instruments in tune often took as much as 5 hours, and on the occasions they failed in this task, they didn't perform.)
This lovely pastoral mood continues on Fantasia Lindum, which is dominated by the 20-minute title suite. "Fantasia Lindum Suite" was an exception among the side-long epics of many progressive and folk-rock albums of the late '60s and early '70s, as it was not a formless jam or pointlessly noisy but a well-constructed piece of interrelated short songs that evoke 15th Century England to lovely effect. Other highlights of this album include the comforting "Safety in God Alone" and the martial-themed "Siege of Yaddlethorpe" which closes the album. Like Evensong, pure magic from first notes to final fade-out.
Blondel would continue this trend with England (1972), the final chapter in this Elizabethan trilogy; if you can find it, by all means, snap it up. Terry Wincott left after that album, and Gladwin and Baird recorded Blondel, having dropped the "Amazing" from their name ("Blondel" was the name of King Henry VIII's favourite court musician); that was their final release for Island, finding them moving in a more rock-oriented direction and on to other pastures with DJM.
Evensong (1970) and Fantasia Lindum (1971) represent the pinnacle of Amazing Blondel's recorded work. Beat Goes On has done a fine job of putting these two albums together on one CD; they are truly of a piece, the digital remaster is flawless, and the price is right. Don't miss out on this one!

Van Gogh's ear for music . . ........2003-08-06
Oh dear, Mr Grondz. What a shame that you seem to have van Gogh's ear for music.
This is a glorious performance of Evensong. While I can't claim that the music sung on this disc would be my first choice for an Evensong at King's, the choir sings with its usual precision and poise. The introit (the Prayer of King Henry VI by Henry G. Ley) is superb, as is the chanting of the psalm.
No recording can ever do the "real thing" (Evensong in King's College Chapel) justice, but this comes pretty close.
Ouch--Bleeding Ears.......2003-05-14
First of all, I would like to make it very clear that I have a great respect for the English choral tradition; both for the composers and for the performers. I know first-hand the technical skills necessary to sing the music of the repoitoire; but I humbly have to find fault with this rendition of Evensong.
Part of the beauty of this style of recording is precisely that it is done "live", but as is admitted in the programme notes, some things were redone without the congregation on a different day. While this isn't blatantly obvious to the casual listener, I find it difficult because it compormises the integrity of the service and all of the little quirks that sometimes happen such as a cough or a sneeze. These kinds of things are a subtle reminder that music (especially in the service of God) is a production of human creativity. This disc is entitled "Choral Evensong from King's College" and thus isn't properly a concert, but worship; to "re-do" tracks seems inappropriate and perhaps even vain...so much for the "musical offering".
I was sadly disappopinted that the upper voices seemed shrill, especially in the verse-response sections at the beginning and the end of the service. At first I thought that the problem lay in my stereo, so I tried to adjust several times, all without satisfactory results. All that I received from this was a blistering headache caused by the boy-sopranos. The secret, my little choristers, isn't to "scream" the high notes, the secret is in proper breath support. Not having ever been to Cambridge, I would like to think that the acoustics of the chapel caused this inbalance in the choir; but perhaps that's too kind.
Finally to add injury to insult, a woman read the Gospel account of the Journey to Emmaus. This simply isn't my style.
A decent attempt overall; but in my opinion, not quite "English" enough for Evensong...
"The ethereal ebb and flow of King's".......2000-09-22
As someone who has spent many a wonderful occasion attending evensong inside King's College Chapel in Cambridge I highly recommend this glorious CD. King's College Choir under Stephen Cleobury our quite simply one of the finest choral ensembles singing today. The ambience of King's is perfectly captured here from the opening introit by Lay "A prayer for King Henry VI" to the glorious Anthem by Parry "Lord let me know mine end". I wholeheartedly recommend this beautiful disc.
"Epitome of Excellent English Choral Music".......2000-09-15
This CD in my opinion is excellent. It is usual in a live recording that the sound quality is not good, but in this CD, there is an exception. This was my only reserve when buying the CD, however my fears were unecessary. I very much recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys choral music and especially the music of the English Church.

Product Description
This CD presents premiere recordings of four works by the gifted American composer, David Liptak. Liptak's music builds large detailed structures from small and simple means. Frequently, a simple rhythmic gesture will generate an entire movement or a melodic figure will often transform itself, becoming a flower from a seed. Broken Cries was composed for the Tarab Cello Ensemble, which performs it here. The composer writes that "I imagined a kind of of music that was filled with hesitation. Pauses and silences break the flow of sounds, as a voiced cry is sometimes broken by a breath, or perhaps, a sudden thought." Liptak's stunning Ancient Songs takes most of its texts from ancient oral traditions of various cultures- the Passamaquoddy Indian tribe from Maine, the Papago Indian tribe from the southwest, the African Gabon pygmy culture, and a Scottish nursery rhyme. At the end of the cycle, a poem by the American poet James Wright provides a remarkable apotheosis.! The songs are sung with intensity by the work's dedicatee, the wonderful American baritone, William Sharp. The composition of Liptak's hauntingly beautiful Serenade was begun at the composer's summer home in Denmark, and Liptak writes that it "represents the warmth and ease of a Danish summer evening." The five extremely varied movements of this serenade run from simple and meditative to dance-like and highly energetic. The closing work is certainly this disc's simplest and most direct- a short Forlane for solo guitar. Guitarist David Starobin is the performer of this hypnotic little gem. Music of Tom Flaherty Tom Flaherty (b. 1950) Vorarlberg Resonance (1991) for two pianos, Karl and Margaret Kohn, pianos; Timeflies (1996) for guitar and cello, Peter Yates, guitar, Tom Flaherty, cello; Trio for Cello and Digital Processor (1991), Tom Flaherty, cello; Semi-Suite (1990) for solo cello, Tom Flaherty, cello; Quartet for Viola, Cello and Digital Processor (1991), Cynthia Fogg, viola, Tom Flaherty, cello; Time to Travel (1996) for two pianos, Karl and Margaret Kohn, pianos.

Marvelous music, marvelous music, mediocre recording............2004-03-10
Who said America doesn't have a fantastic boy-choir tradition?
He should be slapped in the face....
First of all, I've always admired Gerre Hancock for his bold music selections. He may be dismissed as a "modernist" by the more conservative choral conducters, but one who has an ear for good music will know what makes an outstanding musical performance. I'm very happy Hancock has decided again to perform something of Ned Rorem, wich suits the sound of the 5th Avenue choir very well. One would also want to mention Hancocks own musical compositions, like Judge Eternal, wich are marvelous work of art! His improvisation on the organ however is a little bit a of a disappointment (what you wouldn't expect of somebody who was a protegé of Jean Langlais for crying out loud). But he makes up for that in other CD's. The last piece on the CD, performed by Peter Stoltzfus (an outstanding young talent) is Rorem's Magnificat from organbook II, an organsolo wich absolutly MINDBLOWING!
I would have almost rated this CD 4-stars because of the mediocre (but not bad) recording, but one should hold in mind that the recording opperandi for such a broad space as St.Thomas can be very demanding. Still, an overall must for music, choral and organlovers alike!

A phenominal showing of technique and expression.......2003-06-26
Two amazing masters of their instruments team up Joseph Alessi and Philip Smith as they preform beatuifully with the University of New Mexico Wind Symphony. As for the Wind Symphony only one word can be said, OUTSTANDING!!!! The sololist only two can be, EVEN BETTER!!!! An array of expression and technique feel your heart as you listen to this CD. My favorite song was Colloquy. In Colloquy Mr. Alessi proves once and for all that he is truly the best classical tenor trombonist of our age. Showing off his brilliant tone and awsome expression it is truly a "sight" to listen to. Mr. Smith in Eversong also shows off his ability and great sound in an almost ballade. One can only admir his expression as he soars threw the air in this peace. And Fandago is also a nice peace expecially for a closer. Almost a summer feel going down a boardwalk or crusing around down town. This CD is definitely a must have for brass players everwhere. These two artist are truly gifted and talented.
Well Concieved and Amazingly Played.......2002-02-09
Two masters of their respective instruments Joseph Alessi, trombone and Philip Smith, trumpet. Very few people match the musical achievement of these two people. The compositions on the album are fist rate. Colloquy, for trombone & wind ensemble by William Goldstein allowed Mr. Alessi to demonstrate his beautiful sound. The band played very well behind him. Derek Bourgeois' Concerto for trombone and Band is an inventive score that more than showed Alessi's technique and expression. My favorite pieces on the album were Evensong by Steven Greyer, commissioned for this album. It is slow piece played exceptionally by Philip Smith. His tone and phrasing dominated the piece, but the band behind him was very receptive and balanced. The last song Fandango, commissioned for this album as well, by Joseph Turrin gives me the image of Philip Smith and Joseph Allessi cruising down Broadway with the top off and playing. It is fun and a great way to close the album. This is a must have for brass for trumpet and trombone players and a great choice for anyone who wants great music to listen to.
Great Music.......2000-12-13
This album is a fantastic combination of artistry and technique. The compositions are top-notch pieces idealized by some of the most gifted and talented composers of the late 20th century. The University of New Mexico Wind Symphony executes the compositions with great care and attention to detail, as well as a deep understanding and appreciation of the music. If you consider this CD for no other reason than the soloists, your expectations will not only be met, but they will be far exceeded. Joe Alesi is a master of his trombone and can communicate through the rich sounds of his instrument. Phil Smith can make his trumpet sing and the artistry of both men is phenomonal. This CD is definitely worth owning!

Customer Reviews:
Could have been a great recording.......2005-02-12
I considered the only review available, and purchased, but found audibility real problem (on my Bose system). Sometimes it cannot be heard, then I have to hurry and turn it down before I blast my eardrums out. I have become familiar enough with the CD to just avoid a few of the tracks, though I wish that were not the case.
One of the best choral works ever.......1999-09-11
I've listened to many choral cds over the years, but this one, by far, is the best that I have ever had the pleasure of listening. It simulates an evensong complete with the lessons. The balance is great, the sound quality is exceptional. All choral music lovers should immediately purchase this cd.
