Album Description
"A really exciting approach to these concerti... There is an ebb and flow that makes these recordings quite satisfying... An informed performance; acrobatic yet always lyrical, at the same time giving the music great strength and a chance to breathe," says Gavin Borchert, reviewer for The Beat on KUOW Seattle and The Seattle Weekly. In a glowing review, broadcast August 7, 2001 on KUOW, Mr. Borchert praised Ms. Dillingham's performance of the Haydn Cello Concerti Nos. 1 and 2 on a variety of levels. An "excellent job, showing a rich, lush tone, dark and chocolate -- just a beautiful sound." "Ms. Dillingham and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra "The Seasons" produce amazing textures, achieving a taut, forward motion and excitement." "A sinewy, strong sound, yet with transparency... The best of both worlds: a luscious cello sound contrasting with focused precision and a penetrating tone."

5 out of 5 stars top drawer.......2007-02-11

i don't find ma's sound "immaculate but thin" at all. i find it well integrated with the orchestra and and immensely powerful. i highly recommend this recording. the concerto in C is a treasure.

4 out of 5 stars A Splendid Performance.......2002-02-28

I'm not very familiar with these concerti, but I think that this is a fine performance, wonderfully recorded. People can spend hours arguing over who performs it better, whether it's Rostropovich, Casals, Du Pre, Starker, whatever. They usually resort to highly personal and more-or-less improvised language, feeble attempts to describe what is really a very complex style and personality. They are all different performers with a different sense of color. I'm sure the other performances of these concerti are wonderful as well. This, though, is a great recording also.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Haydn.......2001-12-28

Out of all the recordings I have heard of these two concertos (Rostropovich, Du Pre....), this one is the best. However, it all depends on what you want these pieces to sound like. If you like unbridled intensity and passion, then I would recommend the recording by Rostropovich (with Academy of St.Martin in The Fields). As far as the C Major concerto goes, I believe that the style of Rostropovich works very well. However, the D Major requires much more delicacy and finesse. And this is a quality that Yo-Yo Ma possesses in enormous quantities. His almost flawless technique and intonation makes the D Major an especially enjoyable experience. However, the C Major is also beautifully played and thoughtfully interpreted. It contains much of the excitement of Rostropovich while sounding a little more refined (as Haydn should sound, in my opinion). The English Chamber Orchestra provides a very steady and well balanced accompaniment and thus if you want one CD with both Haydn concertos at the best price, this is the one to get.

5 out of 5 stars Ma Wows Yet Again!.......2001-02-23

As a young cellist, I found this to be an extremely beautiful recording of the two concertos. I really enjoyed Ma's phrasings in the C Major, which are quite different from, say, Rostropovich's recording of the same. I also found his use of dynamics to be outstanding. The contrasts are there, but not overly emphasized (as many performers do to pieces from this period). An outstanding buy.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, but it falls short of Du Pre's Recordings.......2000-02-23

Maybe this is a case of an opinion being forever formed by the first recording I heard of two pieces I love. Ma is a true virtuoso, but compared to Du Pre's recordings from the late '60's and early 70's with Barenboim and Barbirolli, he seems so restrained. You can argue that the choice to have the cello more integrated with the orchestra is more in the classical rather than romantic mode, so Ma is perhaps being more faithful to Haydn. But I think when you hear the solo notes leap like electricity from Du Pre's instrument, you won't care. There's a passion and fire in Du Pre's performances that seems lacking behing Ma's immaculate but somewhat thin sound. So overall these performances of Ma left me a little dissatisfied. A good second choice, but still a second choice.

4 out of 5 stars Great century classics of du Pre at budget price.......2004-05-27

EMI Classics releases this mid-line "Great Recordings of the Century" compilation that samples cello concertos of Haydn and Boccherini. Cellist Jacqueline du Pre passed at the summit of her career but no doubt this compilation, which is once again a miniature and a re-release of works that are already available in numerous CDs, confirms her place in the pantheon of cellists.

This compilation consists of Cello Concerto No.1 in C and Cello Concerto No.2 in D by Haydn, and Cello Concerto in B flat by Boccherini. Once again it recapitulates du Pre's agile, oracular power of communication. The famous 1967 recordings of these concertos still may raise eyebrows amongst today's authentic performance hall. Even though these three pieces may be available from previous full-price releases, it is doubtful whether these selections have ever been mastered on disc with such immaculate, passionate intensity, which is the reason why I decide to get this compilation.

The Haydn C major, under du Pre's rendition, truly accentuates its formal elegance and economy and its fresh, spirited thematic ideas. Few cellists could even compete with her phenomenal dexterity of fingers and bowing wrist which manifested in the delicacy of the nuance. Each of the three movements of the C major is in full sonata form. The imposing but asymmetrical main theme dominates the first movement. Du Pre takes up and richly embellishes the principal theme. The mid development culminates in a powerful ritornello that pulls the music back to C major for the recapitulation.

The Haydn D major is in complete contrariety to the C major. It is a far more relaxed, leisure, and expansive work than its predecessor, with each note being unfolded leisurely. The opening theme of the D major sets the tone while a secondary theme in the orchestral ritornello is executed in a decorous manner. The development is discursive with little of Haydn's signature harmonic tension. This piece lacks the romantic, bold tone in C major that carries the musical line forward in an exhilarating presence.

As many listeners have known, a German composer and cellist by the name of Friedrich Grützmacher in 1895 did a major overhaul of Bocherini's Cello Concerto in B flat, giving it a romantic quality Boccherini never would have known. The most outrageous arrangement was the replacement of the slow movement with a more bold, intense adagio movement that lends the piece's romantic touch. And again du Pre's rendition is immaculate.

This is a budget-priced CD with a sampling of some of du Pre's greatest performances that are probably unmatched even by today's standards.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Du Pre, Unnecessary Release.......2003-07-17

This CD confirms the great cellist Jacqueline Du Pre in a place of well deserved honor -- in the elite company of the world's best classical performers and conductors as featured in EMI's "Great Recordings of the Century" series. The problem is everyone already knew she was great and we have all had access to these recordings previously on CD. However, this mid-line title does make for a much better release than the still available full-price CD coupling one of the two Haydn Cello Concertos featured here with her recording of the Dvorak with then hubby Barenboim. However, the best way to get these magnificent works is in one of several larger EMI collections of Du Pre playing Cello Concertos -- my favorite being the 4-CD "The Concerto Collection." Du Pre's artistry is so incredible that it makes any and all purchases worth it.

          2 out of 5 stars What the -- ?.......2006-06-19

I must chime in with the negative votes for this disc. The blues cadenzas are really inappropriate to the material, being a complete break from the style of Haydn's concertos, and not even referring to the previous thematic content (as far as I could tell). Now, I like to think I'm not being a crank about this - I have a good collection of 20s-40s jazz, as well as some early blues and honkytonk piano recordings. It's true that jazz musicians and arrangers sometimes make reference to themes from classical music - but they do it in a jazz style, and it fits right in. Not only does the blues have nothing to do with Haydn's music, but the cello is really not a suitable jazz/blues instrument (despite recent experiments). (Whereas the piano, with its percussive potential, might be more appropriate, especially where the composer has already introduce a "swing" element, e.g. some of the Saint Saens concertos.) On top of this, I wasn't exactly blown away by the "straight" parts of the performance. This disc was a great disappointment, and represents a lamentable lapse in taste on the part of both Kliegel and Naxos.

          3 out of 5 stars Gutsy ... and controversial!.......2004-08-30

This CD is controversial and you will either love it or hate it, or you may, like me, have rather mixed feelings, but I promise you it will not leave you cold! The reason for this is not to be found in the compositions presented (Haydn's two surviving cello concertos and the best-known of Boccherini's total of nine) but in the "small print" at the bottom of the inlay: "Cadenzas by Peter Breiner". Breiner is not only a conductor and arranger, but also a jazz musician, and here he manages to combine Haydn's music with some "gutsy" cello playing (by Ludovit Kanta) of the variety that you would expect to hear in a jazz club rather than a classical concert hall. In fact, both Haydn cello concertos are given a strong rhythmic accent which is anything but authentic, only the Boccherini is left more or less "untouched", although I suspect that here, too, Breiner was not concerned to establish any kind of authentic manuscript! The result is a disc that can entertain, amuse and sometimes set your foot tapping as well as tickling your ears with that mellow cello sound (which is excellently captured and put right in the forefront by the engineers - the orchestra is rather pale in comparison); what it doesn't do, of course, is give you 18th century music!

So if you are into historically authentic performances, just quietly forget this disc and move on (Naxos has since produced a much more serious recording of the Haydn concertos with the German cellist Maria Kliegel; the Boccherini concerto is available in an excellent version by Russian Ivan Monighetti on Berlin Classics). But if you want some fun and can listen to this with a twinkle in your eye, it is well worth the slight investment that you need to make. (The CD was digitally recorded in 1987/88 and is generously filled with 69 mins. total playing time.)

4 out of 5 stars Cello with a touch of jazz.......2000-10-31

Peter Breiner's cadenzas on this recording are actually jazz cadenzas, which gives a really interesting twist to these consistently fresh cello concertos (it's kind of a mixture of classical and jazz with some bee-bop and negro spiritual thrown in). Boccherini's concerto doesn't fare as well as Haydn's, but for this price, give it a shot.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, even if a bit strange..........2000-04-29

Conductor Peter Breiner wrote the cadenzas for these performances, and they are not at all what you would expect. They draw on blues and jazz harmonies that wouldn't be heard until 100+ years after the composition of these concertos! I found them quite off-putting at first, but have warmed to them after subsequent hearings. Haydn was always the musical jokester, and loved to surprise his audiences; if he were alive today, he might get a kick out of this recording.
Cadenzas aside, these are very good performances. They are warm, never stiff, and the musicians sound like they are having a great time. The Haydn C concerto is particularly inspired. Only 4 stars though - partly because the soloist's tone gets a bit squeaky on a few occasions, but mostly because Boccherini simply is not a composer on the same level as Haydn. I would have preferred another Haydn work - perhaps a violin concerto or a piano concerto.
Nevertheless, this is clearly worth checking out.

3 out of 5 stars Great music, but there are better performances available........2000-04-01

This recording's cadenzas, composed by the conductor, sound almost dissonant at times. Their style is just too far removed from the classical era to work well with Haydn' music. Otherwise, the orchestra and soloist are okay.

The Boccherini concerto fades in comparison to the Haydn concertos. Overall, this is a good budget cd.

This is Haydn in first rate exposition. Stirring and dignified performance. I'm not a professional musician -- but this is a great performance and one I will listen to often with great pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Fresh Interpretation of These Concertos........2002-04-10

This recording showcases these Haydn Cello Concertos in a way I have not heard before. Ms. Dillingham's playing is strong, yet nuanced and sensitive. She brings a remarkable sense of atmosphere to these beautiful pieces. The Moscow Chamber Orchestra is also excellent, as is the sound quality of the CD.
