Among the pleasures of the French Baroque revival is not only the thorough exploration of the giants of the era (such as Charpentier, Couperin, and Rameau), but the rediscovery of fine second-rank composers such as Pierre Hugard, who was active at Nôtre-Dame-de-Paris in the mid-18th century. Hugard's Missa redde mihi laetitiam, performed here by the French ensemble Accentus, was published in a surprisingly antiquated format--the four-part choirbook used for a cappella sacred works through the 16th and 17th centuries. Hugard's music is an attractive combination of late Renaissance-style counterpoint, the occasional fugue, and the elegantly lilting rhythms typical of French Baroque music. Laurence Equilbey and her chorus perform persuasively; an additional treat is a set of organ works by Guillaume Lasceux, performed by Frédéric Desenclos on the colorful Cliquot organ at the Chapelle Royale in Versailles. --Matthew Westphal
