Kyung Wha Chung ~ Bruch - Violin Concerto · Scottish Fantasia
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This inspired coupling was Kyung-Wha Chung's recording debut, and as these exceptional performances prove, it wasn't just that famous strapless dress that launched her triumphant international career. Bruch's ever-popular First Violin Concerto gets a performance of genuine fire and passion. The Scottish Fantasia was a favorite of Jascha Heifetz, who performed it in a cut version with his customary perfection of technique. Chung really throws down the gauntlet, playing the work complete and really staking the music's claim to be considered a masterpiece. This is simply the best performance it's ever had. She's assisted in no small degree by Rudolf Kempe's masterful accompaniments. --David Hurwitz

Nice..........2006-02-06
This is an excellent recording of two great Bruch pieces. The concerto is especially poetic. As has been said before though, it's exactly the same as another recording...only less, so it doesn't make sense to buy it (unless you collect Kyung Wha Chung memorabilia, then I guess it does)
As a side note...That editorial is perhaps the most disgusting thing I've ever read. It strikes me as extremely sexist (Ginette Neveau, Hilary Hahn...what, they think woman can't play the violin or something?)
Great Performance, but get the Decca Legends.......2003-09-20
These are great performances for sure, but don't buy this CD! Both Bruch works have been reissued, along with Chung's recording of the Mendelssohn VC with Dutoit, all on one disc in the Decca Legends series. Why pay for two pieces when for the same price you can have three? Don't make the same mistake I originally did!
Excellent!.......2002-01-01
Kyung Wha Chung did very well in this recording! Her Bruch's violin concerto no.1 is excellent! So is her Scottish Fantasy. This recording is better than most young violinists' recording. You can feel her solid and beautiful sounds that were made from a powerful strength of hers. Besides there are also great recordings of Bruch's Violin Concerto No.1 by Heifetz and Isaac Stern. Maybe you should try them all!
Understanding True Bruch!.......2000-07-31
chung is an awesomely capable performer whose technical facility, musical intelligence and unfaltering verve place her among the higher echelons of today's string virtuosi. That she has elected, moreover, to record two pitifully neglected Romantic masterworks distances her from a generation of violinistic super-clones, content to rehash perfunctory, off-the-shelf Tchaikovsky, Sibelius and Beethoveen.... Bruch's Violin Concerto receives a performance of sufficient charisma, accomplishment and passion to finally win the piece the attention it surely deserves.
