Editorial Reviews Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) left Czechoslovakia for Paris in 1923. He fled France and headed for the USA during WWII. He composed a great deal and taught at the Mannes School of Music most of the period from 1948-1956. His last years were spent in Switzerland. Burle Marx (1902-1990), one Brazil's most admired composers, began his career as a pianist but turned to conducting. He founded the Philharmonic Orchestra of Rio de Janeiro in 1931, and in 1947 was appointed Artistic Director of the Opera Rio de Janeiro. Marx taught at Philadelphia's Settlement Music School from 1952-1977. David Loeb (b.1939) studied composition at the Mannes College of Music and now teaches at Mannes and the Curtis Institute of Music. He has composed extensively for Japanese instruments and for early Western instruments as well as for more conventional media. Ned Rorem (b.1923) attended Northwestern University, The Curtis Institute and Juilliard. He moved to Morocco and then to France where he lived until 1958. A Pulitzer Prize winner, his instrumental pieces have been conducted by such international artists as Bernstein, Mitropoulos, Ormandy, Paray, Mehta, Reiner, Steinberg and Stokowski. Recorded at the Settlement Music School, Philadelphia, 1990. DDD. Cover: © Gunter Temech. Lehman, American Record Guide, July/Aug 1991
Leonarda's recording is excellent.
an exceptionally good collection of uncommon 20th Century chamber music. [Martinu:] clear, bright, joyful "neoclassicism"
Peter Burwasser, Fanfare, July/Aug 1991
imaginative program
subtle emotional range and pastel wash of colors, all executed with brilliance and panache. [Marx:] delightful
