Miss Julie
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
What a coup it is to have this significant live performance from 2003 performed by the music department at Curtis Institute where Ned Rorem first studied in the 1940s and has been a faculty member for over 20 years! As a major addition to the opera, we have a new work, Aftermath, where Rorem, as have so many other composers over the past four years, responds to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. As Rorem writes, "In the wake of the September 11th shock, I asked what a thousand other composers must have asked: what is the point of music now? But it soon grew clear that music was the only point. Indeed, the future will judge us, as it always judges the past, by our art more than our armies- by construction more than by destruction. The art, no matter its theme or language, by definition reflects the time: a waltz in a moment of tragedy, or a dirge during prosperity, may come into focus only a century later
As a Quaker, I was raised to believe that there is no alternative to peace. Perhaps its wrong, perhaps right, but I am not ashamed of this belief
" Rorem, born in 1923, is one of our great lyrical composers, described by Time magazine as the worlds greatest composer of songs. His output encompasses far more than that, of course: three symphonies, four piano concertos, chamber music, other works for orchestra, all of which display a wealth of melody and a distinctive, unique instrumental sound (listen some time to the Symphony No.2, whose brief second movement is essentially an instrumental song). Rorems prowess as a vocal writer (and author of 14 books) lead him, naturally, to this adaptation of the classic play by August Strindberg, presented here in a remarkable, vivid performance and recording.

Customer Reviews:
One of the most moving compositions .......2007-07-12
Not only one of the most beautiful scores, but one of the most profound and heartrending compositions ever created, and I listen to an enormous amount of music. As with many great things, most people have never heard of it. If one likes pieces such as Barber's Adagio for Strings, I highly recommend this. The movie, based upon Strindberg's play, also, is beautiful and touching with superb directing and acting.
classic & brilliant.......2000-02-02
There aren't many directors who can also compose, let alone write music for their own films. The score for this film is a string quartet, chamber pieces which seem appropriate to dramatize the caracters in this artful film set in the 1890's. Figgis' compositions are brilliantly performed by the Medici Quartet and National Quartet, which includes a beautiful solo cello piece performed by Caroline Dale.
Mike Figgis and Milan Records have produced a serious yet beautiful soundtrack that stirs your intermost emotions. Once you have experienced this album, you can't stop listening to the haunting and lingering themes of each track. Highly recommend this CD to the preferred listener - very classic and brilliant score!

Product Description
Riding the fine lines between folk, bluegrass, and Americana, "My Feet Won't Miss This Ground," features a potent combination of ultra-compelling songs and some of the most emotive singing you'll hear in any genre. All acoustic based instrumentation brings a warm, big sound to the project, and the overall production quality is superb. It delivers something approaching a Norah-Jones-meets-Alison-Krauss mood and feel, with just enough edge to keep you coming back to listen again and again. The musicianship is outstanding, with agile performances by renowned guitarists Mike Dowling and Jim Hurst, but also remarkable mandolin work and evocative whistles on several of the tracks. Overall, a very even-yet-dynamic recording that successfully and comfortably fits in its own acoustic-based musical niche.
Customer Reviews:
Among the best acoustic music albums released in years!.......2007-01-04
It is difficult to search for words that do this justice, so let me just say that this album blew me away. Like Matt Flinner's album The View from Here, this is one of those rare recordings that makes me so thankful I wasn't born in some earlier time in history, elsewise I would never have experienced this. Dave Thompson's song writing is so fresh and so far beyond the ordinary, the lyrics so thoughtful and evocative, Julie Elkins' vocal inflection and banjo work simply superb, and with supporting musicians as tasteful as they are talented. Recorded primarily in Montana, the fact that their music is so underrated is criminal. While all of the musicians have bluegrass in their blood, this is not a bluegrass album, but something much more progressive that is hard to classify....as their liner notes say "Riding the fine lines between folk, bluegrass, and Americana" But even that description fails to capture the variety and unique quality of this music. The material is progressive, but very listenable and emotionally evocative. It is too bad that the track listing on Amazon doesn't offer sound clips of all the tracks, but you can hear short clips of some of the songs at Julie Elkins' website. As one example, consider the first song, Midnight Trains. This song has a great groove, but also includes spaces that let the music breathe. For me, one of the highlights of this album is Jason Thomas's beautiful understated fiddle & viola work throughout....the very epitome of good taste in note choice. Likewise his mandolin work and the mandolin/bouzouki playing of Ben Winship, and the outstanding dobro sounds of Ivan Rosenberg. But this music is truly more than the sum of its parts. Several of the slower songs have a strong melencholy feel I find very appealing, in contrast to the shallowness inherent in much of our current American pop culture. For example, just listen to the longing of Carolina is Gone, or the pain of Mercy Railroad. At the moment, my favorite song is Spanish Peaks, which has a very upbeat Mexican feel. But this is an album that I suspect I'll never tire of, with different songs emerging above the others over time. It is pointless to try to categorize, but Elkins & Thompson's music shows us what is possible, and gives us hope for even more possibilities in the future. And we can only hope that future will be soon.
Mighty Fine.......2006-07-25
I have been a fan of Kane's River, Elkins & Thompson's full-time band, for a long time, and I was so excited to hear this solo project. They don't disappoint. There are Celtic songs, train songs, drinking songs, songs of love lost, all sorts of good stuff. Nothing lonesome about it - just solid songs, powerful singing and lots of guest artists who will be familiar to bluegrass/folk fans. Here is a chance to see what talented musicians can do when they aren't restricted by genre. Highly recommended!
