Editorial Reviews As a solo artist with both American Gramaphone and SDG Records, Jackson remains close to his classical roots. His earlier recorded releases Sunken Cathedral, Ballade, and 109 featured compelling performances of classical piano works by Scriabin, Beethoven, Debussy, Rachmaninoff and Persichetti. That pursuit now continues with his performances on the American Gramaphone Dayparts series with works by Scarlatti, Debussy, Beethoven, Chopin and Liszt. The new Holiday Musik series offers exciting performances of Harpsichord Sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti and Preludes of J. S. Bach. Jackson's SDG Records releases The Mountains and The Sea and Berkey Meets Horowitz on the 503 offer performances of original solo keyboard and instrumental works from his published catalog. An accomplished composer, Jackson Berkey now offers a sizeable published catalog which includes solo, chamber, orchestral, symphonic band and choral works in varying genre. Together with his wife Almeda - herself a distinguished conductor, vocalist, and librettist - the couple founded SDG Press to publish and distribute their compositions and arrangements. SDG Records also features their music as recorded by Nebraska's Professional Chorale, Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum, under Almeda's direction. CD/Cassette releases with the Cantorum include Arma Lucis =80 The Armour of Light, the Christmas album Gaudete The Natural State of Man is Joy, The Mountains and The Sea, Arvo the Magnificat, and American Shadows. Each of these recordings features works written by Jackson Berkey. Many of Jackson's compositions and arrangements are in the sacred genre, several being extended works for mixed chorus, soloists and instruments. These include the Christmas cantatas The Glory of His Majesty and The Eternal Life; the Christmas Anniversary Carols; the Easter Celebration Come, Follow Me!; the South Dakota bicentennial works South Dakota Shadows and South Dakota Shadows Suite (treble voices); the 1996 Commission Thoughts and Remembrances; the extended a cappella work Arma Lucis; and the compelling Native American Ambiances. An ASCAP award-winning composer, Jackson's catalog of works is gaining wide acceptance and receiving many fine performances. He was given top honors with the 1999 Nebraska Individual Artist Fellowship for Performing Arts, Distinguished Achievement in Composition Award. In the same year he received First Prize in the New Music for Young Ensembles Composition Contest in New York City. His winning composition Piano Trio Kassarjian will be performed in one of the major New York City halls during the 1999-2000 concert season. His sacred choral works have been performed and recorded by the Luther College Nordic Choir, the Singing Statesmen of the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, the Seattle Girls' Choir, the Omaha Cantata Choir, Nebraska's Professional Chorale Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum, the Seattle Choral Company, the Sacramento Master Singers, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. His symphonic band setting of The Battle Cry of Freedom was commissioned and recorded by the "U. S. Air Combat Command Heartland of America Band". Berkey's Mass Over a Period of Time was initiated in 1994. The Gloria is a 35-minute work in seven movements. The Credo, also an extended section, will be structured much like the Arvo Paert TeDeum. With each successive movement being written on commission from differing choral sources, it is anticipated that the Mass will be completed by the year 2002. Jackson Berkey earned his Masters degree at the Juilliard School in New York City and has appeared on the artist roster of Baldwin Piano and Organ Company for more than two decades. His background also includes studies at the Chautauqua Institute; Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York; Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; and Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, where he was born. ALMEDA BERKEY As a lyricist (ASCAP), Almeda has written texts for several choral and solo works by Jackson. She maintains a private voice studio and conducts the Berkey's annual Christmas and Easter cantatas. She sang the 1990 premiere of two Berkey songs with the Omaha Symphony Chamber Orchestra, Bruce Hangen, conducting. For Berkey Meets Horowitz on the 503, she recorded Jackson's Voices from the Earth song cycle with her husband playing the Horowitz Steinway, Carmelo Galante on clarinet, and David Low on cello. Almeda serves on the Board of Directors of Chorus America, an organization representing North American professional and independent choral ensembles. She continues to sing and guest conduct, including the 3379th telecast of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in May 1994. Being comfortable in all styles of music, Almeda is especially gifted at creating a diversity of tonal color and a full range of emotional intensity of the choral ensemble as she develops its complete performance potential.
About the Artist
JACKSON BERKEY
As a musical artist, Jackson Berkey defies designation. Composer, performer, recording artist and producer, solo artist ... the range of his musical endeavours and accomplishments combine with a depth of talent that is formidable indeed. His sparkling debut recital in New York's Town Hall launched a remarkable and highly varied career. Although Jackson's musical foundation lies in the classical, sacred, and chamber genre as a result of his advanced degree study at the famous Juilliard School, he is perhaps best known for his performances as the featured keyboard artist with Mannheim Steamroller. The grammy award-winning group's seven Fresh Aire albums have all won critical acclaim. Their American Gramaphone Christmas albums Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, A Fresh Aire Christmas and Christmas in the Aire have all gone triple platinum.
Music Director Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum Almeda Berkey has been conducting for over 30 years. Her conducting credits include the five Cantorum recordings: Arma Lucis, Gaudete, The Mountains and The Sea, Arvo The Magnificat, and American Shadows. Her Master of Music degree in voice was augmented by much conducting study, and her choral conducting style is derived from such diverse sources of inspiration as America's Norman Luboff and Sweden's Eric Ericson. After having sung many American-Canadian tours with the Norman Luboff Choir, she was Director of Choral Activities at the University of Nebraska at Omaha for four years. Playing keyboards with Mannheim Steamroller in concerts since 1973 has taken her across America, Canada, and Europe.
