5 out of 5 stars Melodies to miraculously cure the moribund!!!.......2005-09-10

This 2000 3-CD set is a new edition of 2-CD set from 1990 titled "Opérette-Passion" from EMI France. By popular request, this adds to the already mirific collection a third CD containing some of the real glories of mid-XXth century French operettas: Maurice Chevalier, Tino Rossi, Fernandel, Alibert, Denise Duval, Luis Mariano, Georges Guétary, Bourvil, Mathé Altéry, Anny Cordy, Gise Mey and Armand Mestral. The selection is not exhaustive - that would be impossible* - but it does give any listener a major incentive to go ferretting for more of the same and the complete score of some of those genuine masterpieces of charm, humour and melody by Fancis Lopez or Maurice Yvain (among many others). For students of the French language and French opera, this collection is priceless as it gives a very good impression of what makes the French singing voice different from any other: something called "le phrasé", which unfortunately cannot be duplicated or improvised by international stars who simply dabble in French (except maybe the multi-talented Petula Clark). The recordings range from a restored antique of the 20's by Chevalier to full stereo scores from the 70's. The result is a package whose value will never be duplicated in discriminating choice, sound quality and sheer listening enjoyment. One very minor reservation : The dates of the recordings are not indicated as they were in the "Opérette-Passion" collection and the names of the lyricists are not given. The liner notes are composed of a 2-page essay which gives a general outlook of the evolution of French operetta (in French) but could have been a little longer, in my humble opinion. Details like this would have made the difference between a wonderful album for connoisseurs and a genuinely educational tool. * The operettas of Vincent Scotto are not represented. WARNING: These recordings are genuine treasures and are never available for long either individually of collectively, so buying this collection is an absolute no-brainer.

5 out of 5 stars FROM OFFENBACH TO LOPEZ.......2002-08-16

Yesterday ,before going to sleep, you told your wife:I have nothing against FRENCH operettas, but what i want to hear is the songs ,not the dialogue that goes with the genre when you listen to complete works. Here in that collection, all the composers who created that particular form of light music are represented. It is so much more entertaining than traditional opera.Among the highlights are songs from OFFENBACH's works like LA BELLE HÉLENE and LA PÉRICHOLE;MESSENGER's VERONIQUE and MONSIEUR BEAUCAIRE;the famous LA VEUVE JOYEUSE that was successfull around the world;CHRISTINÉ's PHI PHI created the day after armistice in 1918.One of the pleasant surprize for me was hearing songs from LES MOUSQUETAIRES AU COUVENT and one from LA FILLE DE MADAME ANGOT (JADIS,LES ROIS)and another from CIBOULETTE(NOUS AVONS FAIT UN BEAU VOYAGE).MADY MESPLÉ,one of the best singers of the genre is featured on seven songs, and she is always a joy to hear in any role of the repertoire.FRANCIS LOPEZ, who is remembered as the last important composer is well honoured with eight selections with singers like BOURVIL,GEORGES GUÉTARY and LUIS MARIANO.Don't try to resist THE MERRY WIDOW ,she'll get to you one way or another.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Glenn Gould.......2002-12-04

Glenn Gould is known primarily as an interpreter of the works of Bach, but he's done a lot more than that. So it's fitting that a two-disc compilation of Gould's work consists of a Bach-only disc and a second disc of non-Bach. Humorously titled "Glenn Gould Plays Bach" and "Glenn Gould Plays Not Bach," these discs show why Glenn Gould was such a revered pianist.

Anyone who's a fan of Gould (or classical piano in general) should know that he is probably most famous for definive interpretations of Bach's Goldberg Variations. Excerpts from that piece are included here (along with other Bach works). Hopefully, listeners will take it upon themselves to buy a complete recording of this piece after hearing it here. Gould's playing is simply amazing.

The second disc has Gould playing pieces by a number of composers, including Beethoven, Sibelius, Strauss, Haydn and many others.

This is a wonderful collection, with lovely packaging, excellent sound quality and superb performances.

    4 out of 5 stars A Master of Piano.......2002-03-04

I absolutely love Glenn Gould. He was a true artists who interpreted music in his own original way and didn't care about what others thought. Usually, in fact, he played the "opposite" way--making slow songs fast, fast songs slows, and playing every melody with "staccatos."
Naturally, Gould is known for his unbelievable interpretations of Bach. This first CD (Glenn Gould plays Bach), is really a compilation of "greatest hits," so to speak. All these pieces are well-known to classical lovers (and pianists, like myself), but I think that people who aren't classical afficiandoes can enjoy this first CD very much (by the way, the best tracks on this CD are probably the Italian Concerto (particularly the third movement), the Goldberg Variations, and the Partita)
The second CD (Glenn Gould plays not Bach), is also very good. While he plays no J.S. Bach on this CD, he does manage to play some other baroque pieces (the Scarlatti, C.P.E. Bach, and Gibbons), so at first one might not be able to tell that this isn't just another Bach album. As for the other pieces on this CD, the Haydn is performed in a playful, "cutesy" manner that it is meant to have, I find the unusual versionos of the Brahms, Mozart, and Wagner enlightening (though I believe that it can be annoying to some without open minds. Gould's main flaw is that he never really liked to use the pedal where most thought it was needed.)I love the Emperor, though it seems out of place because it is the only orchestral piece. Finally, I believe that the Sibelius, and Prokofiev were some of Gould's favorite pieces (he plays them like he loves them, and they are probably the best tracks on this CD).

5 out of 5 stars Unique and moving.......2002-01-13

Glenn Gould adds astonishing depth to the performance of Bach. He is so moved by it himself, you can hear him humming in the backround. This humming is a very unique and charming part of his playing and makes his performance of this material even more special.

5 out of 5 stars Great Glenn Gould + Bach Sampler.......2001-12-07

'Images' is the best sampler of Glenn Gould's take on J.S. Bach. It's a great way to get into Glenn Gould ... besides '32 Short Films ...' This album definitely deserves more than 2 stars. I do agree with the second review ... the 1st disc is great (Gould playing Bach) while the 2nd disc is mediocre (Gould playing other lesser composers works). One suggestion would be for Sony to come up with a Gould anthology that had an excellent sampling of both Gould's take on JS Bach and Beethoven (and perhaps Haydn). Any rate, this is a must have for both Gould fans and novices.

5 out of 5 stars Great summary of Gould's talent with Bach.......2000-02-04

Someone stole this CD from my car, and I've been trying to buy it everywhere & anywhere. The first CD (Bach only) is fantastic in the way it shows different aspects of Bach's music. Second CD is less thrilling because of the broad mix of composer - but that's OK because the 1st CD is awesome.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Cluytens comes away with a lot better than average.......2005-11-20

I can't agree with the reviewer below that Andre Cluytens was a great conductor. He certainly had his chances to prove otherwise, being one of EMI's house favorites for French music in the 50s and 60s; most unusually for a French conductor, he made a Beethoven cycle with the Berlin Phil. (readily available on the used CD market and beloved by fans) and regularly conducted Wagner at Bayreuth. None of it really stuck; Cluytens was a good, reliable stick man with no special ideas.

The Great Condcutors series has done well by him, however. Perhaps becasue the bulk of his many recordings wee with EMi--the main source for this series--the compilers oculd pick and choose. CD 1 contains a lively Bizet Sym. in C (1953 mono), far from the most sparkling ever done but nice and in good sound. Even better is his Debussy Images (stereo 1963), which greatly benefits from the idiomatic playing of the Paris Conservatoire orchestra. It doesn't rival Boulez for detail and finesse, but that's not the point here. CD 1 ends the French trifecta with Ravel's La Valse with the Philharmonia (even better stereo, 1958) that exchanges impact for swoony atmospherics--no perfumed ironies allowed.

CD 2 mixes in a bit of German and Russian with the French. A 1957 Schumann Manfred Over. with the Berlin Phil. is respectful and clean. The major work on this CD is a live 1964 Symphonie fantastique from Tokyo, again with the Paris Conservatoire orchestra--a memorable souvenir in decent radio stereo. The Prelude to Act III of Lohengrin is unusual for featuring the Paris Opera orchestra; it's straightforward and full-sounding. Finally, we get 10 min. of the Coronation scene from boris Christoff's well-known EMI recording of Boris Godunov from 1962. It's cleanly Gallic rather than moodily Russian. The best part is Christoff's appearance and the real Kremlin bells rather than Cluytens' leadership. Overall, Clutens is well represented without surprises or any risk of inspiration. Four stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great Conductors of 20th Century = Best Reissues of the 21st.......2003-05-27

It's sad that the "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" reissue series has not gotten more notice on Amazon.com and in other places, because it has my vote for the best reissue program thus far of the 21st Century. Drawing from the archives of all the major classical labels (EMI, Sony, BMG, DG, Decca, Philips, Supraphon, etc.), EMI and IMG Artists have assembled a wonderful series of affordable two-disc sets by the leading conductors of the last century. And unlike its counterpart, "The Great Pianists of the 20th Century," which are basically compilations of material already available on other CDs, the "Great Conductors" features rare and, for the most part, previously unreleased performances!

This particular CD, Volume 6, features the great Andre Cluytens. Throughout the 1950s and early 60s Cluytens recorded frequently for Walter Legge at EMI, and there are no shortage of Cluytens CDs currently available. Notables include his Ravel Piano Concertos with Francois, Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique (see my review), and Shostakovich's Piano Concertos with the composer himself on the ivories. Sadly his brilliant Beethoven cycle, which was available at budget line in the first EMI Seraphim series, is now out of print. But enough about his other recordings, let's talk about what is contained in this collection. The highlights here are the French works -- a 1963 Debussy's Images, Bizet's Symphony in mono from 1953, and a live recording of Symphonie Fantastique (different from the one mentioned above and from the mono recording on Testament) from 1964 in Tokyo. Some of the material in this set has been issued before though. The Ravel La Valse has been available on an EMI Import of Cluytens conducting Ravel's Orchestral Works. The excerpts of Boris Godunov are available in the full opera on EMI's GROTC set, but since I'm not an opera fan, I don't own that set anyway. Finally, the Wagner Prelude from Lohengrin has just recently been reissued on a Testament disc of Cluytens conducting Wagner (see my review). However, these works account for less than 20% of the music on this collection, and having the same great music on two different discs is easy to swallow in this case.

Whether you are a serious collector of classical music or a beginner, the "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" has something for everyone. If the prized, rare performances previously unreleased on CD (or ever!) doesn't excite you, then use this as an opportunity to check out one of the greatest conductors ever recorded. Since stores are offering increasingly homogenized classical music sections, this conductor may not be in your collection, and that would truly be a shame.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful disc by a beautiful singer.......2005-05-19

Definitely I recommend without reservation that you buy it. The remastering is fabulous, considering what AFKA had to work with. (The old European reel-to-reels don't give a true idea of the warmth and exceptional beautiful of Ms. Marion's soprano.) In particular, Marion sings beautifully in French; that language brings out nice colors from her instrument. Of great historical interest are Ms. Marion's interpretations of the music of Bruno Droste, whom the program notes tell us was "the Gershwin of East Germany." Marion was married to Droste until his untimely death in 1969.

Lots of the great artists here aren't at their best. Emil Gilels gives a perplexingly starchy performance of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 27, Mahler's Symphony No. 4 arrives in a remarkably conservative reading by Rafael Kubelik, and Maurizio Pollini's collaborations with Karl Böhm in Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 and Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 are both chilly, you-either-love-them-or-hate-them experiences (I favor the latter). Though it's easy to think it's your fault that Hans Werner Henze's Fifth and Sixth Symphonies seem noisy and impenetrable, the booklet quotes the composer as admitting defeat in the latter work. Of course, there's some good stuff here, such as the Carlos Kleiber-conducted La Traviata with Placido Domingo's voice in the voluptuous bloom of youth, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli's meticulously sculpted Debussy Images and some Preludes, two discs of Ring cycle chunks from Herbert von Karajan, Martha Argerich playing Chopin's Preludes and Piano Concerto No. 2, and some full-throated Bach Christmas cantatas conducted by Karl Richter, though many collectors will already have those. --David Patrick Stearns

          4 out of 5 stars About Karajan's Ring.......1999-06-06

Amongst the works on this set is a series of excerpts from Karajan's masterful "Ring" from the late sixties. Much has been said about Karajan's approach to the Ring, but I'd like to especially recommend the first of the music-dramas (Das Rheingold): it is, in short and in my opinion, the most remarkable reading of this work available on disc - forget Solti, Levine and Barenboim, you'll be stunned to hear the life-like, soft-spoken (soft-sung), delicately played musical "scherzo" by Wagner. A scherzo it is, compared to the tragedy to come! I notice that unfortunately the prelude to Das Rheingold, an ethereal masterpiece, is NOT included in the extensive excerpts - why, I wonder?
