On this beautiful CD,"Consider My Soul," Thomas Quasthoff,baritone extraordinaire, takes the listener to great heights with his renditions of arias from the "Christmas Oratorio", "St. John's Passion", "St. Matthew's Passion", and others.
The duet with Sibylla Rubens, from the "Christmas Oratorio", is achingly exquisite, as the two powerful voices-soprano and baritone - blend in sublime beauty and strength.
And what a joy to hear Quasthoff sing "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot",as a bonus track.
All one can say, is "Bravo!" and "Bravi Tutti!"

Quasthoff Focuses on Sacred Works and Makes Them New.......2006-11-26

Thomas Quasthoff continues to astonish us with the depth of his sensitivity to a broad range of vocal repertoire. Just when it seems as though he is settling in to the Romantic and Post-Romantic works he records this album of works by the masters of the earlier era.

Singing with the fine support of the Dresden Staatskapelle conducted by Sebastian Weigle, Quasthoff re-visits works that made him famous. From Bach he has selected arias from the Christmas Oratorio and from both the St John and the St Matthew Passions. The color and extensive range of his baritone voice are simply amazing and he brings to these arias conviction and communication. Likewise with the excerpts form Handel's Messiah he converses with solo instruments in a sense of uncanny equality. From Mendelssohn he offers arias from both Elijah and Paulus: few baritones can compare to his dramatic sense he brings to these works.

For this listener, ending the recital with versions of 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot' and 'Deep River' diminishes the majesty of the CD. Not that his resonant voice is not as tender and warm as any recorded version of these spirituals, for the singing is rich and moving. It just feels like an abrupt change, or encore, to the heftier works on the CD. A small quibble. It remains a fine recording experience. Grady Harp, November 06

A real gem on a great recording........2007-02-27

I have to tell you how horribly upset I was to have this CD stolen from me by my friends (who dared not admit it!)
I bought this together with Ms. Bartoli's "Arie Antique". I love both discs to death.
Ms. von Otter has a very different timbre from Ms. Bartoli. However, in terms of singing, both artists were at their absolute peak in those two discs.
My favorite song on this disc, Gluck's 'Oh, del mio dolce ardor bramato oggetto', though also an Italian 'antique' composition, was NOT on Ms. Bartoli's disc. Ms. von Otter sung it with such soul and voice that I really wonder (increasing more so these days) if Ms. Bartoli could be as good!
I heard both their 'Voi che sapete', and must say that I preferred von Otter's, though Bartoli gave an almost equally good interpretation in her own Mozart album.
Having reacquired this lost album recently, I would add that Ms. von Otter's interpretations in the rarer Mozart operatic works are a real wonder. Compared with Ms. Fleming's Mozart album wherein contained a number of Mozart's rare works, the singing of Anne Sofie von Otter clearly is of a much more convincing standard. As the singer herself puts it: 'On passionate women and moustaches', undoubtedly this disc demonstrates the full musical capability of hers in both genres to a fascinatingly high standard.

AN EXCELLENT VOICE! AND A VERY WELL THINK REPERTORY. I REALLY HIGHLY RECOMEND THIS BEAUTIFUL CD EITHER IF YOU LIKE THE GREAT VOICE OF VON OTTER OR THE CHARMING ARIAS OF MOZART, HAYDN AND GLUCK.

A Charming Disc.......1999-03-05

This collection finds Von Otter at top form and paired with a very sympathetic accompanist. (Would that Pinnock did more vocal pieces, his Haydn Mass is also lovely.) While I am not usually a fan of the scattershot recital approach, this one works. If you like either Von Otter (and how could you not?) or Pinnock, this disc is self-recommending.

Fans of Nelson Eddy's classic musical films, will be in heaven when they hear his golden tones on this collection of the Operatic Arias and Concert Songs recorded between 1939 and 1944.
Eddy was not what you would call a booming Baritone, but wow, what a voice. Sweet, smooth, breathtaking. Gorgeous!

His masterful rendition of the Arias, and Concert Songs in Italian, English, German and French are impeccable. Whatever the emotion, sadness, joy, etc, Eddy captures it. You will feel the story in the words.Some are very solemn and moving, others are upbeat and will leave you smiling. Enjoy 2 from Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro"(Non Piu Andrai/Se Vuol Ballare), Haydn's "The Creation",2 from Wagner("Jerum! Jerum"/"Evening Star") ,Moussorgsky, several from Tchaikovsky including "Don Juan's Serenade. You can see the complete list of 20 tracks in the buying info, but some of the other highlights, I thoroughly enjoyed are Schubert's "Serenade" and "Ave Maria", "Chanson Du Toreador", Bizet(from Carmen)and "Hopak"(Moussorgsky).

The original recordings are over 60 years old. This CD is a wonderful digital transfer. The album will give you over 70 minutes of enjoyment. It also come with a nice little bio booklet, detailing the singing career of Nelson Eddy, and the track listings, with the composer and the year Eddy first recorded it. The only thing it is missing, is the credits for the fine orchestras and musicians accompanying Eddy. I would have liked to have known who they were. None the less a fabulous and 5 star find for fans of Nelson Eddy, and a nice taste of some familiar Operatic pieces.

Nelson Eddy's operatic recordings.......2004-01-07

This CD contains all of Nelson Eddy's recordings of classical music. However, given that he recorded over 200 songs, this is a small amount of his recorded legacy. Also note that, other than the Mozart (Italian), the Strauss (German), and the last 4 selections in French, the rest of these selections were recorded in English, although Eddy could and did sing them in the original languages. Despite what the previous reviewer said, these recordings are not from "the early years", when Nelson Eddy was an opera singer. These recordings are from the 1940's. Nelson Eddy had performed in his last operas in 1935, and he was almost never associated with actual opera on film. He performed yearly in concerts, solely of classical repertoire, from before his national fame, until the early 1950's. He was a very popular radio performer in the 1930's and 1940's. He sang many more operatic pieces/classical songs on radio (usually in their original language) which he never recorded. I, for one, regret that he did not record more from his classical repertoire, because that essential part of appreciating his art is mostly gone forever. My point is, that these songs do not give a full sense of the wide range of Eddy's work in the non-popular areas of song.
The liner notes are pretty good, although there are some errors in them.

Ah Sweet Mystery. A trip back in time. Is there any music medium Nelson Eddy did not excel in? First opera, concerts, movies, radio, tv, nightclubs. He was the master of them all. This is a great introduction to the early years when he was opera's leading and most exciting baritone.

If you like opera sung well, here's one for your collection! These arias don't strike me as too serious which makes this CD fun to listen to, especially "Ich moechte wohl der Kaiser sein."

A Grand and Humorous Outing with Thomas Hampson.......2005-10-26

Thomas Hampson just seems to refine his beautiful voice and intelligent musicality as the years pass. This fine album is no exception. He has elected to perform comic arias ('basso buffo' if you will) that most baritones save for their declining years when the glory of their voice is waning. But here is Hampson, his voice sounding ever more lush and rich throughout the register, adding his musical insights to this varied group of arias.

Though equally at home in all languages on the concert and operatic stage, Hampson's affinity for the German language reflects his living there for so many years. Two arias by Beethoven - `Mit Mädeln sich vertragen' and `Prüfung des Küssens' - are miniatures in style and vocal acting. In two arias (alternative versions) from 'Cosi Fan Tutte' he rolls his Italian sound with his consonants, making each version of the aria a prize. But for this listener the glory of the recital is the rarely heard 'Sei mir gegrüßt, O Sonne' from Schubert's 'Alfonso und Estrella' - ardently sung and vocally resplendent.

The important presence of Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the Concentus Musicus cannot be emphasized enough. This is period music playing at its finest. The balance between Hampson and Harnoncourt goes far beyond studio technicalities: these two fine artists understand their united mission and produce a unity of vision that defies comparison! If you like Mozart you should have this too........2007-01-21

Haydn had composed a few operas and oratorios. Many of them are seldom performed, or recorded, except The Creation. Though, I think people would agree with me that Haydn's vocal music did not have all the elements that were possessed in Mozart's opera arias and concert arias. However, the five selections in this CD, in my opinion, are pretty much up to the par. Just only one (the cantata in the third track) of which I felt it was too slow (to my taste). I am a fan of Arleen Auger; this disc is certainly a delightful addition to my collections of her discography. In case you don't know who was Arleen Auger (deceased, unfortunately), there was a full article about her in the OPERA NEWS (July 2006 issue). Better yet, get hold a CD called "Love Songs" and listen to it, you know what I meant.
