3 out of 5 stars Excellent in parts, but let down by some very ordinary music.......2003-11-17

An entire CD of music for piccolo? It seems like such a bizarre idea that it's perhaps surprising how close this disc comes to succeeding--even given that the performer is the phenomenal Italian flautist Roberto Fabbriciani.

The first four works are all excellent. Janacek's March of the Bluebirds--based on a theme also used in his wind sextet Mladi--is a delightful, throwaway two minutes. This is followed by two Italian works, Castiglioni's Musica Vneuhkokvahja and Donatoni's Nidi which--in different ways--explore the wonderful lightness that's possible in solo piccolo playing. The following piece, Ferneyhough's Superscriptio--the opening piece in his Carcieri d'Invenzione cycle--is perhaps the closest there is to a classic for solo piccolo, and Fabbriciani plays as you would expect from the dedicatee of this difficult work.

The rest of the disc is less impressive, Casterede's highly camp La Belle Epoque, for piccolo, flute and piano, caricatures Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven in a sub-Poulencian manner, while Loeb's Six Preludes are largely uninteresting exercises in musical Orientalism. Isang Yun's Allegro and Camillo Togni's Tre Preludi do at least rise several levels higher than the immediately preceding works, but it's hard to imagine wishing to return to them on a regular basis.

Stockhausen's Tierkreis--a set of twelve melodies for the signs of the Zodiac--follows next. It's enjoyable enough, without coming close to the best this composer has to offer. The disc then ends with the only orchestral work on the disc, Valentino Bucchi's brief Piccolo Concerto--the title being a pun. This is a rather stylistically eclectic piece, worth hearing a couple of times but not inviting repeated listening in the way the first four works on this disc do.

Overall, this recording is about what might be expected from 65 minutes of piccolo music. Despite the number of weak works in the program, it's worth considering, given the comparatively low price and the outstanding music in the first third of the disc.

5 out of 5 stars "Cutting-edge" improvisations on Stockhausen's music.......2003-10-26

The 12 Stravinsky-style miniature melodies of "Tierkreis" are probably Stockhausen's most easily approachable composition. The melodies composed originally for music boxes in the early 70's to be used in "Musik im Bauch", a scenic piece for percussionists and a large birdman containing music boxes in the belly. All these melodies were later used in "Sirius", and there are arrangements for several instrumental combinations. This CD, released in celebration of the Composer's 75th birthday, presents two realisations of "Tierkreis", or rather two "jam sessions" on "Stockhausen standards." The sound of the original boxes emerges then and then, and the original melodies were played mostly as paraphrases. And the use of the term "intuitive" in the liner notes has nothing in common with Stockhausen's use of this term in the late 60's. I wonder what the Composer thinks about this birthday gift. However, considered as modern jazz ("European style", in spite of Mr Svoboda's nationality), this CD deserves 5 stars. Mike Svoboda has worked with the Composer before in the "Licht" operas as well as in concerts, and he was the main soloist in a CD of the Stockhausen Edition ("Music for Trombone and Euphonium", Stockhausen-Verlag CD 44). Svoboda's homepage refers to earlier versions of "Tierkreis" prepared by him: for trombone and piano (1988), for trombone and percussion (1991), and for trombone and brass ensemble (1995). It is lamentable that these versions have not been released on CD.

2 out of 5 stars a failed modern opera.......2004-12-21

DIE EROBERUNG VON MEXICO (THE CONQUEST OF MEXICO) is an ambitious attempt to stage Artaud's drama as an opera. The concept is questionable -- Artaud takes the historic narrative of Montezuma and Cortez and overlays it with a metaphysical confrontation between male and female, treated as mutually incomprehensible opposites doomed to a tragic denouement. Rihm adds an Octavio Paz text and tragic 16th century poetry by an anonymous indigenous Mexican writer to create an even more unwieldy edifice. Rihm's opera was first staged in 1992 to coincide with the 500-year anniversary of Colombus's voyage and the Spanish conquest. Artaud's twist, which Rihm follows, is to portray not a conquest but the mutual ruin of the antagonists, a metaphysical view with no basis in material history.

Given the powerful elements of the drama, Rihm's music is strangely subdued, even enervating. The lead roles of Cortez and Montezuma are given periodically moving passages (Montezuma's role is sung by a soprano and an alto, as he embodies the female principle), culminating in the work's best moment at the very end as they sing a tragic duet, but the orchestral accompaniment is uniformly uninvolving.

There are many works by the incredibly prolific Rihm that have not been recorded. His 1977 opera, DIE HAMLETMASCHINE, is available on the German Wergo label from amazon.co.uk. My impression is that his reputation as a leading avant-garde figure is strongest in his native Germany, weaker elsewhere in Europe, and virtually non-existent here in the U.S. On the strength of DIE EROBERUNG VON MEXICO I have to weigh in on the low end. Lachenmann's more recent DAS MADCHEN MIT DEN SCHWEFELHOZERN (see my reviews of both recordings) is even less impressive, leaving me to wonder about the viability of German avant opera as a category.

For an open-eared listener interested in Rihm, I would recommend his CHIFFRE-ZYKLUS (CPO, 2006 -- see my review), or better still, the "4 concertos" disc on Hanssler (RIHM-EDITION VOL. 1. 2007 -- see my review), the latest Rihm releases in the U.S. JAGDEN UND FORMEN (HUNTS AND FORMS) is a fascinating if not entirely convincing piece, released in 2002 in the now discontinued DG 20/21 series (see my review). [this review updated 6/7/07 -- RH]

5 out of 5 stars Dizzingly original and powerful.......1999-01-08

Along with Tan Dun's Marco Polo, Rihm's Conquest of Mexico is flat-our the most amazing opera since Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre. From the opening drum fugue, interspersed with shattering bursts from the chorus, to the beautiful duet at the conclusion, the music is dazzling--incredibly inventive at every step, now piercingly beautiful, now knock your head off powerful. Rihm, I think, has been an uneven composer in his career--a number of his works are so so (though not his 5th String Quartet: that's blistering). But in this work he put it all together and even transcended himself. Intriguing text by Antonin Artaud--really a set of plans for a play rather than actual dialogue. But it doesn't matter--Rihm's most powerful moments are shouts, cries, sighs, all visceral sound-moments. Wow.

3 out of 5 stars Two late works, one quite nice, but a short disc and superseded by Stockhausen-Verlag.......2007-07-13

This Pilz disc is unusual. While Karlheinz Stockhausen now issues the performances of his music that he supervises on his own Stockhausen-Verlag label, this must have been one of the last discs where he entrusted a recording to an outside label. The performers of the two pieces here, "Oberlippentanz" and "Tierkreis" are from Stockhausen's inner-circle: Suzanne Stephens on clarinet, Kathinka Pasveer on flute, and Stockhausen's son Markus on trumpet.

"Tierkreis" (Zodiac, 1975-76) consists of twelve melodies each for one of the star signs. While originally intended for music boxes, the work has subsequently appeared in a number of arrangements. The notion of music linked to the zodiac has always intrigued me--Per Norgard's unfolding of the zodiac in his Symphony No. 3 is one of the most awesome things I've ever experienced--and indeed this is a fairly successful work. Certainly it's the most tame thing Stockhausen has ever written, as there are no serial dynamics or attacks, and the melodies themselves approach diatonicism. One regrets, however, that the piece is on a single track of the disc. Other recordings give the 12 zodiac signs a track each, letting the listener more clearly hear the structure.

After "Tierkreis", all of Stockhausen's output for the next quarter-century formed part of his massive cycle LICHT, seven operas each for a day of the week. "Oberlippentanz" for solo trumpet (Upper-Lip Dance, 1983) is a slice from the piece "Lucifer's Dance", which itself is part of Samstag aus LICHT, In this particular scene Lucifer, Stockhausen's cosmic archetype of rebellion, cruelly scowls. Michael, the protagonist of the opera and another cosmic archetype, usually represented by a solo trumpet, sounds his protest.

"Oberlippentanz" is a 12-minute delight in the capabilities of the trumpet, for only around this period in his work Stockhausen finally became interested in extended techniques. The trumpeter uses a variety of mutes and breathing techniques, and even occasionally blows across the mouthpiece, though the piece is very melodic throughout. However, I think without the dramatic aspect that a live performance gives, it tends to overstay its welcome. Apparently I'm not alone in this, for Rabon Maconie expresses the same sentiment in his reference Other Planets: The Music of Karlheinz Stockhausen.

While Stockhausen's works of the 1950s and 1960s are now classics, few avant-garde fans go beyond those. That is, in many respects a pity, for Stockhausen's music continues to be innovative. However, his music is now subsumed to dramatic spectacle, making it difficult to enjoy fully on disc. While one can relax to the sounds of "Hymnen" or "Gruppen" at home, I suspect that late works like "Sternklang" or LICHT and the myriad pieces derived therein are best enjoyed with a crowd in the settings the composer had in mind.

I've long put off discovering Stockhausen's music, as his oeuvre is massive and releases from the Stockhausen-Verlag pricey and difficult to order. Nonetheless, encountering Stockhausen is important for the avant-garde fan, if at least for the massive role he played in the Darmstadt generation if not for the fact that he's produced very novel output. If you come across this old disc, it might be worth picking up in spite of its short length of only 40 minutes.

4 out of 5 stars This CD aims a wider public.......2000-09-04

The pianist was aged 87 by occasion of this recording. She studied two years with Béla Bártok, and through her long career she has given special attention to 20th Century composers. Two beautiful interpretations of "Klavierstück XI" and a neoclassical version of "Plus-Minus" prepared by the composer Nils Holger Petersen make this CD a must to every one who appreciates Stockhausen's music. This version of "Plus-Minus" as well as the pianist's tender reading of "Tierkreis" would certainly be appreciated even by music fans who hate the avant-garde music of the 50's and 60's. However, it is very difficult for me to accept her version of "Aus den Sieben Tagen". The pianist was inspired by the text "Litanei" (where she found "signs" from Stockhausen) and put together a collage made of fragments from the composer's piano production. She claims not to have added a single note to the Stockhausen material. The result is beautiful, but I think that a performance that is planned in detail such as this one cannot be called "intuitive music".
