Messiaen: Et Exspecto Resurrectionem Mortuorum No1-5; Sept haļkaļ

Reinbert de Leeuw and his crackerjack musicians negotiate these difficult scores with dazzling aplomb, not to mention pianist Peter Donohoe's razor-sharp timbre and rhythmic suppleness. The bright, close-up recording captures the full gamut of Messiaen's intricate instrumentation with amazing clarity. These words, however, apply less to Et expecto. Here the recorded balances are poor and the playing is surprisingly slack in sections. Moreover, it's the sole work on the set's second disc, and you can't purchase disc one without the other. But those who respond to this composer's ecstatic, colorful sound-world will find much to admire here. --Jed Distler

5 out of 5 stars Great music.......2006-01-28

I've changed my opinion on Messiaen.
I'm having second thoughts on Messiaen.
Now that I know Schnittke well, Messiaen seems to have some issues.
And Wilbod's comments on the opera, St Francsis really has me wondering "just who is Messiaen". What he says kinda shows in his music./
I'm going to keep some Messiaen, others I will dump. This set stays, for the moment. Mid tier compaoser, and certainly not for everyone.
Found other music more worth my time.
