The First Quartet is a highly episodic, rather verbose work, clearly of (compositionally) youthful (not to say irrational) exuberance, which has at least one foot still firmly rooted in the 19th Century. Nevertheless, this Quartet provides the template for much of AS’s later musical concerns and solutions. In the First Quartet one already finds the importance of the minor second and perfect 5th, just as in Symphony I (perhaps, for his first major orchestral work, he purposely went back to an interval language with which he felt most comfortable). The overall structure of the First Quartet is also very similar to his other 4 movement works (Symphonies I and II, and the Sonata for Violin and Piano), as if this Quartet was the model. Schnabel wrote two major, massive unaccompanied string works i.e. the (1919) Solo Violin Sonata, and this (1931) Sonata for Cello. Among the many differences between the two, the Sonata for Cello has time signatures and barlines, although their succession can be rather free, or when not free, rather unusual, as in the last movement, which is almost entirely in seven. Of the two works, this is probably the more conventional, both in form and harmony, with a faint trace of "Gebrachmusik", and a slight tip of the hat to the Baroque. The work is instrumentally rather difficult (that aspect it shares with the Violin Sonata!) and shows remarkable knowledge of just how far one can push the boundaries of instrumental technique. The Sonata for Cello clearly deserves far more prominence than it has hitherto received, and not just because of the limited repertoire for the specific instrument.

The "Clinker" of the bunch.......2006-12-19

Having collected the entire "The Masterworks" series (including the Bach and Mozart Complete Works) this set is the 'clinker' of the bunch. First off... 6 CD's of Lieder 'historic' (pre-historic) recordings. No Overtures, No Orchestral Seranades, No Haydn Variations?? The performances of the Symphonies and the Concertos are shakey and not very well recorded. Brilliant Classics, who has done such a wonderful job with the Hadyn Complete Symphonies (licensed from Nimbus), the Mozart and Bach Complete sets, has stumbled a bit with this release.

Sweet Lilting Flute Music to Unwind With.......2006-01-10

Crisp and clean and seductively laid back is this nice collection of 31 pieces from the composer likes of Haydn, Mozart, Bach, Debussy, Telemann, et al, performed by the greatest flutists in the world such as Bennett, Galway, and Rampal.

Especially enjoying the Concerto in G by Vivaldi with harpsichord.

The "Unknown" Beethoven..........2005-01-03

I think it would not be wrong to say that most casual listeners of classical music know Beethoven mostly by his orchestral works--the symphonies, piano concertos, violin concerto, and overtures. Those who go a little deeper might know him by the piano sonatas, violin sonatas, and string quartets; however, this misses a significant portion of his oeuvre--and a major facet of his ethos and art: specifically, the chamber works and lieder: this is the "unknown" Beethoven.

This collection is absolutely the best, finest, and most excellent presentation of Beethoven's chamber works: the Horn Sonata; the Piano-Wind Quintet; the Serenade for Flute, Violin, and Viola; the Clarinet Trio; the Septet for mixed strings & winds; and the String Quintet.

Plus, some really nice esoterica: the early piano quartets; trio for piano, flute & bassoon; pieces for mandolin & piano; and pieces for flute & piano.

All of these works fall into Beethoven's First Period; yet, they must not be considered "juvenalia": Beethoven was the greatest artist/poet who ever lived, and his genius was manifest from his teenage years.

This is a wonderful collection of Beethoven chamber music. The recordings are intimate, the musicianship is superb...the music is timeless. The piano concerti are the real highlights here; I don't think they can be any better, and the other selections are very pleasant. If you like Beethoven chamber music (and I can't imagine NOT liking it), then this set is highly recommended. Every now and then you come across a boxed set of recordings that you can listen to over and over. This is one such set.

Brilliant if sometimes odd rhythm and tempo.......2001-01-10

This CD, part of the magnus opus of Beethoven's works committed to CD is wonderfully brilliant and evocative of the renditions of the early 1950's.

Although there are the rare rhythmic, and very rare tempo peculiarities this must remain as one of the finest renditions of Beethoven's Chamber Works. This is of course to be expected from works produced by DDG.

Janacek at white heat.......2003-12-28

This was my first serious venture into Janacek and I wasn't disappointed. Impressive as Dvorak and Smetana's quartets are, frankly Janacek packs more intensity and white heat into his music, and also manages to "push the bounds" of music a little bit more. The Second String Quartet ("Intimate Letters", 1928) was one of his last compositions and represents the full development of his art. Its genesis was tied to his obsessive love affair with the singer Kamila Stosslova, and thus had great personal meaning for him, although unfortunately he died before he could ever hear it performed. As he wrote to her, "I have succeeded in writing a piece in which the earth begins to tremble. Here I can find a place for my most beautiful melodies." Likewise, the ravagingly beautiful First String Quartet ("Kreutzer Sonata", 1923) was inspired by another passionate love story, Leo Tolstoy's tale of love's destructive power. This is electric stuff.

While Janacek was never QUITE as "folksy" as Dvorak, he often dipped into Moravian folk tunes and transposed Slavic-inspired stories into music. The "Pohadka" (Fairy Tale) for cello and piano was based on Russian poet Vassily Zhukovsky's epic poem of the Kashchei, Ruler of the Underworld (Stravinsky later took up this same story in the "Firebird" Suite). Like the Sonata for Violin and Piano, this piece reminded me a lot of Bartok's early adaptations of Hungarian folkmusic, even with the liberal dose of Janacek's distinctive Czech idiom.

This is a lucid and intense performance by the Vlach Quartet. "Budget" be damned. Five stars.

If you like Bartok..........2001-01-02

I'm a Janacek fan with a working cd player, and I certainly haven't got money to burn. I'd just like to proffer a rather more enthusiastic review. First, these works are widely considered to be masterworks in the string quartet repertory. Second, the Vlach Quartet's rendering is in my view excellent, though I don't claim to have heard other performances: certainly, this ensemble has received very good reviews from professional critics. Third, the sound quality is about as good as my working cd player will permit! Nice liner notes, too, and attractive fillers (I mean the violin sonata and the pohadka). In short, an excellent choice for anyone with an eye for a bargain and a taste for hardcore string quartets (late Beethoven, Bartok, Shostakovich, Berg...). And if you like this sort of stuff, maybe you'll also like Purcell's Fantasias, Bach's Cello Suites, Reich's Different Trains, and/or Ram Narayan on sarangi. Though did I hear you say you don't know what a sarangi is?

4 interesting pieces from the czech composer.......2000-12-28

if you're a janacek fan with very little money and a working cd player this may be the disc for you. i'm not overly familiar with the composer's work myself and wouldnt exactly say this disc made me a convert but it is well worth a listen. not exactly my cuppa tea since i generally listen to string quartets when i'm trying to brood over the meaning of life and whatnot but still these are some pleasant, high energy pieces well played by prague's very own vlach quartet. sound recording is alright, it aint mind-blowing but what exactly do you expect for this price?

Great performances of some mostly great music.......2006-01-01

The late Michael Tippett (1905-1998) had one of the most instantly recognisable musical voices of the twentieth century. Although his stylistic concerns may have shifted radically from the radiant, tonally-inflected lyricism of the Concerto for Double String Orchestra to the thorny and ascetic Concerto for Orchestra (and the opera King Priam), the intense and passionate vein of ecstatic musical lines never left his music. This box set collects most of his major orchestral works (with the unfortunate exception of The Rose Lake), and the first three of his piano sonatas and string quartets. Firstly, the performances are universally excellent (all the artists being long associated with Tippett's music). Mention must be made of Sir Marriner's passionate and wonderfully- nuanced reading of the always enjoyable Fantasia Concertante, and Colin Davis' energetic and joyous interpretations of the first three symphonies. He makes the diffuse and poorly- constructed Third Symphony seem more logical than the only rival recording- Hickox on Chandos. Heather Harper, whilst no Blues singer, gives a valiant effort to articulate Tippett's frankly vulgar Blues songs, interpolated between quotes from Beethoven's 9th. Solti's recording of the 4th symphony is everything you'd expect from CSO in the late seventies: power, virtuosity and that famous sheen that obviously inspired Tippett to write the work for them. Unfortunately, the "breathing effect" is a disastrous failure, sounding like a dying bronchitis patient, rather than the "gently breathing" sounds presumably intended by the composer. The first three Piano Sonatas are played beautifully by Paul Crossley, making the most elegant case possible for the average first and second sonatas. The third, truly a great work, is given an electric reading. The string quartets, played by the Lindsay Quartet are also given dynamic, thoughtful performances, the second and third quartets containing some of Tippett's most inspired counterpoint.
All in all, a set well worth investigating, if you do not have any orchestral/instrumental Tippett in your collection, though not every work on here is of the highest compositional quality.

Album Description

The First Quartet is a highly episodic, rather verbose work, clearly of (compositionally) youthful (not to say irrational) exuberance, which has at least one foot still firmly rooted in the 19th Century. Nevertheless, this Quartet provides the template for much of AS's later musical concerns and solutions. In the First Quartet one already finds the importance of the minor second and perfect 5th, just as in Symphony I (perhaps, for his first major orchestral work, he purposely went back to an interval language with which he felt most comfortable). The overall structure of the First Quartet is also very similar to his other 4 movement works (Symphonies I and II, and the Sonata for Violin and Piano), as if this Quartet was the model. Schnabel wrote two major, massive unaccompanied string works i.e. the (1919) Solo Violin Sonata, and this (1931) Sonata for Cello. Among the many differences between the two, the Sonata for Cello has time signatures and barlines, although their succession can be rather free, or when not free, rather unusual, as in the last movement, which is almost entirely in seven. Of the two works, this is probably the more conventional, both in form and harmony, with a faint trace of "Gebrachmusik", and a slight tip of the hat to the Baroque. The work is instrumentally rather difficult (that aspect it shares with the Violin Sonata!) and shows remarkable knowledge of just how far one can push the boundaries of instrumental technique. The Sonata for Cello clearly deserves far more prominence than it has hitherto received, and not just because of the limited repertoire for the specific instrument.

From intimate chamber quartet to full orchestra with choir, the musicians of Florilegium take you on a rousing tour of the Baroque era. Selections by J. S. Bach, his son C. P. E., Vivaldi, Telemann, Boismortier, Hayden and Leclair are played on this CD with relish and finesse. The literal meaning of "Florilegium" is "flourishing", though it can also mean a "collection". Both are apt translations. Florilegium is a core quartet--Ashley Solomon on flute and recorder, violinist Kati Debretzeni, `cellist Jennifer Morsches, and James Johnstone on harpsichord and organ--with an ever-changing roster of top-notch guest musicians. Based in Great Britain and directed by Solomon, Florilegium "has always been a flexible ensemble with a fixed core of players, and in this way [has] been able to perform programmes with music ranging from intimate trios and quartets to large scale chamber orchestral works." Complete Mozart Work on Chamber Music.......2002-03-23

A memorable, complete set of Mozart for strings, winds and horn. This 3 volume set includes the first with winds (clarinet, horn, oboe and basson) while the second CD is all flute with William Bennett. The final CD is string with the incomplete compositions finalized admirably by Erik Smith.

Most memorable to this reviewer is the excellent Bassoon and Cello Sonata performed with controlled passion by Klaus Thunemann on bassoon and Stephen Orion on cello. The interplay of these rich mid-to-low tones is calming and exciting to listen to.

Next to this, the Oboe Quartet led by Neil Black's oboe performance is outstanding. William Bennett's flute offerings are well done, full of clarity and resonance. I've learned that wherever the name Antony Pay shows up, one is bound for a special treat of clarinet. No let down here either!

Very pleasant music to enjoy soft or loud.

The very first and best Mozart for baby.......2001-11-21

It is a CD set with the instant charm. Better yet, there is no dull moment from the begging to the end. If you are familiar to the Peter and the Wolf, you may know how appealing the wind instruments can be to the young child. In this set, you have one of Mozart mastery genres customized for this family. Along with warm performance and quality recording. Can't recommend enough for this particular set!

Mozart Standards & Rarities.......2001-07-28

Many of the works on these three CDs are works that are popular and familiar to almost everyone who has listened to them at one point of his or her life. The Clarinet Quintet, the Oboe Quartet, the Horn Quintets, and the Flute Quartets are all pieces that are familiar to all Mozart aficionados and are here giving eloquent and beautiful renderings by their respective performers: The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and also the Grumiaux Ensemble with flautist William Bennett. In addition there is a CD of Mozart chamber pieces that were never completed by Mozart during his lifetime including several abortive attempts at a clarinet quintet. These have been restored completed by Dr. Erik Smith and the performances are admirable.

The Best in Chamber Music.......2001-07-20

This was the first Box set of Mozart music I bought and it is still my favorite. Just put them in your CD player and sit back and enjoy. Most lovers of Mozart have probably heard most of the Quintets and Quartets before. But CD number 3 is special in that most of the music on it has never been recorded before. They are fragments of music Mozart composed but never completed or were disarded movements of other quartets that were lost. Great stuff well done by all artists. Well worth the money and a great addition to your collection of Mozart.
