Mozart: Symphonie K183; Requiem

This disc captures a live concert from the 1956 Salzburg Festival, and it's by far the best of Bruno Walter's Requiems on disc. His studio account was labored in places, and a pirate Italian "live" outing didn't cut it either. But Salzburg's stars are in alignment on this recording; there's more muscle than usual in his conducting, and his Viennese chorus and orchestra are outstanding. So are the soloists: Lisa della Casa's creamy soprano and Cesare Siepi's rock-solid bass are best, and Anton Dermota, a leading Mozart tenor of the period, is at the top of his form. The disc opens with a lively, sympathetic account of Mozart's first major symphony. --Dan Davis

3 out of 5 stars Great Performance of Solist but foggy sound of Choir.......2000-02-29

I like the performance of Bruno Walter. His performance has some profound atmosphere and his Mozart is superb. His performance has some gentleness and womanlike softness. It makes someone who hear his performance feel as being taken upto beyond the heavenly place. But this performance is something disappointed. The sound of Choir in the introduction is heard somewhat like that I am hearing music behind the curtain. But the performance of the solist is very good.
