Sings Bellini & Donizetti

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
All the selections on this staggeringly beautiful recital CD were recorded between 1965 and 1972, when Montserrat Caballé's voice was incapable of betraying her, and when she sang as beautifully and expressively as any soprano within living memory--and probably before then, to boot. Because the voice was in such good shape, with no signs of strain at either end, perfect breath control throughout, and an absolutely full dynamic range--from C to shining C, from pppp to ffff--Caballé was also free to enunciate the text with utter clarity and to make the characters come vividly to life. Her Elizabeth I and Anna Bolena in the Donizetti operas are noble and fascinating, but it is in Bellini that she is utterly irreplaceable. Norma's "Casta diva" has probably never been performed with such intelligence, insight, and exquisite tone, and her duet with Adalgisa (from 1972) is both urgent and tender. And the rarely recorded final scene from Bellini's Il pirata, sung with this much involvement and luster, makes one desperately want to hear the entire opera (yes, Caballé recorded it eventually, but it's hardly a masterpiece). Caballé understands and communicates the music of Bellini like no soprano since Callas--this CD is an important part of any opera lover's collection. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Serious Fun.......2007-07-01

While most opera stars are submitting to record label hype and narrow artistic freedom, Jennifer Larmore seems to be flourishing in the recording studio. With Opera Rara and now Chandos behind her, she continues to offer sumptuous recordings that are both entertaining and of great artistic caliber. Certainly Larmore does not have to prove herself as she has been performing for nearly 25 years. Anyone who has seen her live knows she is the real deal and she is in top form on this arias disc. Now, mind you, she is singing both mezzo and soprano roles here. And in English. I was skeptical. Being a huge Larmore fan, I though "uh, oh"...My last Chandos purchase was Elizabeth Futral's arias disc and I was not impressed. But here the translations (sung in delicious theatrical English), top-notch singing by Je La and perfect conducting by David Parry with the Philharmonia Orchestra combine to make a highly addictive disc that will go down in history with Larmore's classics Where Shall I Fly and Call Me Mister. She really sets the bar high for other singers.

Thankfully, Larmore goes out of her comfort zone and sings some arias that one would not normally associate with this fearless singer. The Don Carlos and Trovatore arias will certainly give her naysayers something to chew on, but she does it! Note the last few bars of "O Hated Gift". I was on the edge of my seat.

The opening number ("Star of the Evening" from Adriana Lecouvreur) alone is worth the price of the disc. Orchestra and singer match brilliantly and Larmore's final bars brought tears to my eyes. It's good stuff.

The weak spots are minor. Poor Colin Lee is left on the floor in the Favorita duet. A more experienced tenor would have made this duet electrifying. On the other hand, Larmore alone (track 2) singing "O My Beloved" from Favorita proves (as she did in 2001 with OONY) that she should be singing this role on the stage and in a full recording while we're at it. She is Leonora and the tension she creates is heartbreaking.

I could have done without Hence, Iris Hence Away, heard on her In Performance DVD and Where Shall I Fly cd (surely there are other Handel arias, but perhaps that's another Chandos disc in the works???!!!), but it displays how she can still sing Handel like no other. The Tancredi aria is a nice surprise.

The Gioconda track is a blood and guts duet thanks to Susan Patterson and Larmore's singing. I love how Opera Rara and Chandos recital cds always include duets and more. Larmore is a generous singer and part of her genius is how she works off other artists.

As with every Larmore recital disc, she closes with a treat. Juliet's Waltz Song from Gounod's Romeo and Juliet???? Is she kidding??? Nope. I've heard many a soprano struggle though this aria and merely pull it off with a pinched high note. Should Larmore be singing this aria? Hell, no...Can she? Hell, yes!!! But what's so special is she sings it with pure pleasure; as if she'd sung this song her whole career. Not as a mezzo slumming it in soprano territory. And I think that's what she's trying to tell us here. Have fun, be true to your art form and never pander to your audience.

5 out of 5 stars Larmore at her best again!.......2007-06-01

Jennifer Larmore is my favorite mezzosoprano since the very first time. Such an extraordinary artist! To enjoy!

The other two are the Mesple and the Dessay. For me, this is not a role for Dame Joan, although I admit I haven't heard her sing it, nor do I wish to do so (not the entire role).

The Robin is in mono and the sound isn't marvelous. Her Gerald isn't that great, either, but a little collection of Lakmes needs these three notable lyric coloraturas singing this role.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional in every way.......2001-10-11

Coloratura repertoire is difficult to compile. You would think that a "best of sample" just wouldn't flow. Well, sometimes old-timers shrug and this CD shows you why. The repertoire selection is diverse, ranging from arias with full orchestra to intimate art songs. And Ms. Dobbs is at the height of her purity of sound and technique.

Dobbs is currently a judge for the Marian Anderson Vocal Competition. Hearing this CD places you in a different time when she made such an impact on music-making as a whole. This CD is great for the vocal student learning new songs and diction, and at the same time for the expert seeking quality. Simply exceptional, it's a CD you can't just copy/burn from a friend.

A friend who is an opera buff and something of a historian introduced me to this pioneer and almost forgotten voice. A Marian Anderson contemporary,Ms.Dobbs is a diva in her own right with a sweet and powerful voice. A joy and thrill to listen to.

i agree with all the previous reviewers. THERE IS NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE PERFECTION of her singing. I have this CD for a year. It is permanently on in my player in the bedroom. Most of my mornings start with her Casta Diva. No matter what the day brings it is possible to face it with Monserrat singing. Her Anna Bolena is so sweet and so sad, it brings tears to my eyes. How much I wish she recorded Bolena in the studio. As it is I am eternaly gratefull for what she did record.

5 out of 5 stars BEL CANTO PERFECTION! GIFT FROM GOD!.......2003-06-22

This recital and the other RCA masterpiece M. Caballe: Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi rarities are two recitals that every opera fan DESERVES to hear! It's a gift for all of us who love the sound of bel canto and opera in general.

These are exactly the roles Caballe was born to sing. Her voice and musicianship are wonders! Everything on this CD is sung with such emotion and vocal brilliance that makes me forget any other reading of these famous pieces.

Casta Diva has been superbly performed and recorded before Caballe by legends like Callas and Sutherland and it's hard not to compare them. Yet, in my opinion there is no competition. It's Caballe that I will listen to for the ultimate reading of this piece. It's the perfect combination of her gorgeous voice (I can't get enough of her high notes here!) and expressiveness that makes the difference.

The same goes for the other tracks of this recital. Just listen how she phrases Imogene's "Col sorriso d'innocenza". It's as if time stops when she utters that phrase. Sadly, Caballe did not completely record Roberto Devereux or Maria di Rohan or Anna Bolena in studio. I would have sacrificed many other recordings of hers just to have her in studio in these roles. "Mira o Norma" is taken from her complete Norma recording and Cossotto's wonderful Adalgisa perfectly compliments Caballe's high priestess. The recital ends with Caballe singing some of her best pianissimi in Bolena's scene.

Purchase this recital and discover the world of opera! Just keep in mind that Montserrat Caballe's singing here is addictive!

5 out of 5 stars You are in for a treat of heavenly proportions!!!.......2003-02-01

I got this recital disc recently and was flabbergasted by Caballé's out of this world singing. Her voice is an exquisite instrument of power, beauty, and elegance. It has a more refined timbre than Sutherland's and is more ethereal than Tebaldi's. She has breath-taking control over her gorgeous voice. The runs and roulades are tossed off cleanly. Often criticized for her caustic, fortissimo high notes, she only delivers beautiful high notes here. Even so, a few of the high notes sound a bit strained, especially the one that accompanies the word "infiorato" in the "Bolena" aria. The only fault with her coloratura technique is that she lacks a real trill. In the "Anna Bolena" aria, she substitutes scales for the ascending trills. However, only the most accomplished coloraturas can pull off those very taxing trills correctly. Two examples are the magnificent Joan Sutherland and the incomparable Beverly Sills. Love you, Beverly! By the way, Caballé has the most ethereal pianissimos that I have ever heard. Then again, I haven't experienced Zinka Milanov's pianissimos. Renata Tebaldi also had great pianissimos, but she didn't sustain them as long as Caballé did and they were not as wispy-thin as Caballé's. They were, however, richer-toned than Caballé's due to Tebaldi's fabulous spinto voice. Simply put, I love Caballé's voice more than those of other sopranos'. It had to be sent from heaven. How else would you explain its origins? Anyway, this CD was my first recording of Montserrat and she didn't fail to please. All the hype surrounding her singing is fully justified. Her "Casta Diva" is an exquisite piece of vocalism teamed with drama. This recording is worth owning for that one aria alone. I didn't care much for Imogene's Mad Scene, but she sang it well nonetheless. Her portrayal of Elizabeth I in "Vivi ingrato" is not the most dramatic, but it is not dull either. She amazes you with the beauty of her singing. No where will you find a more beautifully sung version of this aria. Beverly Sills is more dramatic, but even she can't beat Caballé's exquisite vocalism. Sills gives us the private, tortured woman behind the queen. Caballé gives us Elizabeth the suffering, but regal queen. Her rendition of the aria from "Lucrezia Borgia" makes one want to hear the full recording of that opera with her in the title role. She is truly astonishing. Her "Havvi un dio" is delivered masterfully. The exquisite duet from "Norma", "Mira, o Norma", is rendered tenderly with expert vocalism and dramatic involvement. The mezzo-soprano is competent and has excellent breath control. She sounds unnervingly like Caballé. I believe she is Fiorenza Cossotto. If so, then this track must have been taken from Caballé's complete studio recording of "Norma". The last track, half of Anna Bolena's Mad Scene, is done wonderfully. Again, the vocalism is exquisite. However, I prefer Sills' masterful rendition. She sings just as well as Caballé does, but she is so much more dramatically involved. When she sings about Percy and asks forgiveness for abandoning him, she turns in a frenetic and very exciting performance. And, of course, no soprano, including Callas, sings "Al dolce guidami" so right and so convincingly. When she sings the words "castel natio" before the ascending trills, which are great by the way, her voice matches Donizetti's musical and vocal inflections perfectly. You have to hear it to believe it! It sounds so right that one has to believe that it cannot be bettered. Anyway, back to Caballé. She shows us in this recital why she was considered one of the very few prime donne assoluti in the world in the the period from 1965 to her retirement from the operatic stage a few decades later. To her fans, this is a required recording.

This is an outstanding Norma and no doubt the superb and dramatic conducting Molinari-Prandelli takes much credit for the intensity of this performance. Maria PeDRini takes the credit too for her large, warm and ductile voice. She is a little short on legato and imagination but what fantastic high notes and the voice is on a column that is perfect in proportion, no triangles, hour glasses, diamonds, or inverted triangles here. The production is absolutely even from top to bottom. She is from the Caniglia/Cigna school of singing and style. They may have more drama and authentic feeling and hence they are more famous, but Pedrini's voice is unique in its fullness throughout the scale. In this regard she is unmatched, even by Caterina Mancini, who obviously followed Pedrini's lead.

Penno and Stignani sing as if they have to go home right away for dinner is on the table. Yet they both have monumental voices. Like Pedrini, they are modest people endowed by nature with immense vocal instruments. In fact, in terms of volume, even del Monaco could not match Penno at his highest amplitude (so I have heard)---and who could challenge Stignani?

This is Norma with THE FINEST VOICES in the world, but without that internal flame of Callas, that meltingly beautiful legato and mezza voce of Milanov (listen to her Norma, that voice is pure glory), the impetuosity of Cigna, the madness of Mancini, the strong vulnerability of Cerquetti, the intense masculinity of del Monaco or the singular perfection of Simionato, (there are others too) Norma loses it's unique ability to sear the soul.

As for the Arias, Pedrini's singing of the Tower Aria from Trovatore is sheer glory and her accents in "La mamma morta" make elevate this performace to legend.
