This disc containing the major part of Britten's mixed-voice a cappella repertoire (the Hymn to St Cecilia is the only substantial omission) could hardly be a better showcase for the virtuosity of Polyphony and the increasingly assured talents of Stephen Layton. There's every sign that this music is particularly well "sung in": the phrasing--whether rapid, rat-a-tat, or relaxed--carries such a sense of rightness and unanimity, always knowing precisely where it's going; the vowel colors are nothing if not alluring; and, most noticeable of all, the blend and balance of voices are exceptional. The excellent recorded sound picks up all the benefit from the airy spaces of the Temple Church in London without ever becoming swimmy. The works span a period of some 45 years of Britten's life, from the ever-popular childhood A Hymn to the Virgin to the often fiendishly tricky Sacred and Profane based on that intriguing mix of eight medieval lyrics. The "Choral Dances" from the opera Gloriana, recalling the celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation, are ravishingly sung. And there is nothing better here than the performance of A.M.D.G., where Polyphony gives the Gerard Manley Hopkins poetry all the passionate commitment it demands. --Andrew Green

This is a slightly more recherche release than the previous two in the Britten Choral Edition, but it is of no less quality. The above words are a quotation from the short piece "Advance Democracy" which is surely the most unusual of all Britten's choral works. An epitome of the 1930s political climate, it is given a taught rendition here by the Finzi Singers which would not seem completely out of place as the background music to one of the old "Movietone News" bulletins (played in cinemas, especially during the Second World War).

Also on this disc are the captivating "Flower Songs," the compelling and unusual "Sacred and Profane" (in which the singers capture the melancholy atmosphere of Britten's final years - this piece was written merely months before he died) and, for contrast, the celebrated experimental work "A Boy Was Born," in which Andrew Lumsden's choristers of Lichfield Cathedral make a welcome appearance.

Tender and beautiful performance of the "Ceremony of Carols".......2002-12-20

The "Ceremony of Carols" is the high point of this CD, and it is tenderly performed. The soloists are excellent, and the choir equally fine, with very good placement of soloists, choir, and solo harp. This is the most beautiful performance I have ever heard of the "Ceremony of Carols," and this CD is worth buying for this work alone (at a bargain price). The other works by Britten are a nice bonus.

If you're looking for a traversal of Britten's choral works that contains consistently excellent performances, complementary sound, and includes works rarely heard in concert or on disc, don't hesitate to buy the three volumes recorded by The Sixteen. Volume 2 features the powerful and highly original cantata for choir, soloists, and organ, Rejoice in the Lamb, along with little-known works such as "The Sycamore Tree," a delightful a cappella carol composed in 1930 but not published until nearly 40 years later, the exciting "Antiphon" for chorus and organ, and "The Ballad of Little Musgrave and Lady Barnard," written during World War II for the brother of a friend who was imprisoned in Germany and wished to have a piece for male voices to perform. This is an essential disc for Britten fans and for all lovers of choral music. --David Vernier
