Nielsen: Saul & David, Op.25

Editorial Reviews

It's amazing that this superb biblical opera isn't better known. Nielsen's symphonies are firmly in the international repertoire, and given their high level of drama and energy, you would think that his two operas would receive at least the occasional performance outside of Denmark. Well, that's why the compact disc was invented. Most will know the story--King Saul is jealous of the young David to the point of madness, and persecutes him until their final reconciliation on his death bed. The lack of a conventional female love interest may be what keeps this piece from becoming more popular. Handel solved this problem in his oratorio Saul by giving the David role to a woman (or countertenor, which is much the same thing), but Nielsen wasn't into anything that kinky. So we have no choice but to enjoy the recording and wait for a live production. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Solid Basic March Collection.......2006-08-07

Great solid basic collection, a real bargain with mostly outstanding performances. Having played several in bands and orchestras and sung one (the Rimsky Mlada), I have a good idea how they should go. As other other commentators say, there are better individual recordings, such as anything by Fennell and the Eastman band. The organ pieces just don't do this music justice, although a real cathedral organ can come close, but that's beyond these discs. The Nielsen Aladdin March is the new one for me. Berlioz by Solti is great! Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Bold and brassy mixes well with the rest.......2004-08-14

I am impressed most by the variety in 40 Famous Marches on 2 CDs, a Double Decca release. The performers include Philharmonic Orchestras, a Brass Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, organ, Symphony, and for nine selections, the Wiener Philharmoniker. I am not sure if the word schmaltzy ought to be applied to any of this, but the Wiener Philharmoniker often exhibits a unique sound which is not quite the same as any of the other selections. The final five selections are all performed by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble under Elgar Howarth in ADD/DDD format in 1983 and 1985. Two of those five are rousing marches by John Philip Sousa, another called `Entry of the Gladiators' is typical of songs played by live bands at circuses, and the remaining two are from movie soundtracks. `Colonel Bogey' is famous from the movie about British prisoners of war building a railroad bridge for the Japanese in World War Two, the Bridge over the River Kwai.

The major source of variety in these 40 selections is that many of them are taken from operas and even a ballet, Tchaikovsky's famous `The Nutcracker--March.' I originally found this collection when I was searching for `Funeral March of a Marionette' by Charles Gounod (1818-1893) which has a theme that is famous from its use by a television series hosted by Alfred Hitchcock. If you can't remember how that goes, you ought to buy this collection and listen for it early: it is selection 4 on the first CD. The main theme was fun to play and easy to learn in a book of piano lessons, but the rest is quite whimsical and worth listening to, and people who play organ with pedal notes might still be able to find music for playing the entire arrangement, difficult though it is for someone like me, who becomes confused when too many things are going on at the same time.

There was something on this CD that sounded weird, and I had to check to see what it was, and it was just someone playing the organ, but he was trying to play `The Ruins of Athens -- Turkish March' by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827).

Something by Handel sounds so much like the beginning of a movie that I expect someone to start singing, `The hills are alive with The Sound Of Music,' but this CD is something else. The first CD starts and ends with marches from `Pomp and Circumstance' by Edward Elgar, so people who have been to a lot of graduation ceremonies will be expecting plenty of familiar music. The 6:32 time is slightly longer than the Wagner's `Tannhauser -- Grand March' on the first CD, but long graduation ceremonies may play it even longer, until all the diplomas are handed out.

Verdi, Strauss, Schubert, Prokofiev, Berlioz, these famous composers might be recognized by people who know music, but the `Wedding March' by Felix Mendelssohn is famous with everybody for what it is used for. If you haven't heard it lately, maybe you should hear it a few times so you won't be so nervous the next time it comes around.

5 out of 5 stars 40 Famous Marches - a great collection!!.......2003-11-21

This is a wonderful collection. What a wide collection of exciting pieces, all in one affordable package!! It encompasses so many composers and styles, from the majesty of Elgar and Walton, to upbeat Sousa to schmaltzy Strauss. It also includes such classic marches as Meyerbeer's Coronation, a pinnacle of the French opera style, the timeless Wedding March of Mendelssohn, and the brilliant organ piece, Marche Triomphale of Sigfrid Karg-Elert. There are also some interesting oddball selections like the mysterious Things to Come of Bliss (composed for the H.G. Wells film), the jaunty Chabrier marche, and oriental flair of Nielsen's Aladdin.
In reading some of the other criticisms, it is true that the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble perhaps is not the best or most noted ensemble. However, overall, the pieces they play are either Sousa or patriotic-sounding tunes. Their only forays into the true classical realm are the Grand Marches from Tannhauser and Aida, and they are not half bad. So don't let those pieces keep you from buying the CD - 1) because most of the songs they do play are great and 2) they only play in 1/4 of the music....

5 out of 5 stars Classics on Parade.......2003-05-01

If you're looking for a collection of marches from classical music, this would be a fine one to get.
It contains recordings made from 1958 to 1996 by some of the world's great orchestras, plus several numbers by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, and four arranged for organ.
The first 35 marches include many of the best-known classical marches, plus three "coronation" marches, written as far back as the end of the seventeenth century (The Prince of Denmark's March) up to 1954 (The Dam Busters). The last five pieces are "popular" marches played by the Jones Ensemble.
The liner notes give a nice history of marches, including where most of the ones in this collection fit into that scenario.
A great collection of marches by classical and popular music "masters".

3 out of 5 stars Too, too much Philip Jones Ensemble.......2003-04-17

A mixed bag of music, 40 FAMOUS MARCHES compiles a good many marches - some not too common.

The CD has it's high points:
1. Chicago Symphony (under Solti!) playing Berlioz's Hungarian March (love that trombone excerpt - BAM!)
2. London Philharmonic playing Prokofiev's "The Love for Three Oranges" March
3. Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance No. 1 (also London Philharmonic)

BUT... There's some real stuff on here, too. I must concur with a prior reviewer: FAR TOO MUCH Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. Case in point - Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever, as played by PJBE is completely devoid of the energy and fire it needs. The trombone countermelody at the end is just NOT THERE (you'll strain to hear it). There's just no way this is right. PBJE is great in their setting, but this is just not it.

Overall, this CD might be a good compilation for the novice listener, but I would recommend the more experienced (or trombonists, like myself) purchase works by individual symphonies that include the music you desire - a more expensive, yet more expressive alternative.

5 out of 5 stars A symphonic opera.......2003-04-10

If you love the Nielsen symphonies, then you'll probably love Saul and David, even if you don't love opera. The music is as organic, powerful and noble as, say, the 3rd or fourth symphonies. This performance is also marvellous. I used to have the Horenstein recording, but apart from having a russian lead attempting english (instead of danish) the recording itself was severely constricted in climaxes. Not so here, where the drama is supported by a ripe, romantic recording that sweeps you along with the music. Even Anne Gjevang sounds good (and I normally cant stand her)whilst the Saul of Aage Haugland is simply outstanding. Once you've listened once, you'll listen again. Then, try out Nielsen's other opera Maskarade, - as different from Saul and David as you could possibly get, but eqiually marvellous.

Nielsen was a master at writing for wind instruments, and at one point projected doing a concerto for all members of the Danish Wind Quintet (that is, for flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon and horn). These two works are as far as he got before his death. Both pieces pit the soloist against other instruments in the orchestra. In the Flute Concerto, the fastidious soloist confronts a lunatic trombone with hilarious results. And in the Clarinet Concerto--the greatest for the instrument since Mozart's--the soloist has a very serious argument with a snare drum whose part is equally difficult and prominent as that of the woodwind. There's no resolution in the latter piece: in the end both characters simply go their separate ways. These two works deserve the widest currency, and are expertly played and recorded by Esa-Pekka Salonen and his fine Scandinavian soloists. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Another Stirring Nielsen Performance By Salonen.......2001-04-08

Esa-Pekka Salonen is without a doubt one of the finest young conductors currently on the scene. After enjoying two Salonen discs of Nielsen music (the CD coupling Nielsen's 3rd and 6th Symphonies, and the one featuring the Violin Concertos of Nielsen and Sibelius), purchasing this performance of the Flute and Clarinet Concertos seemed a safe bet. And was it ever! The Concertos are the album's centerpieces and they are terrific. However, equally enjoyable are the "Saul and David" Prelude and "Rhapsodic Overture," pieces that personify Nielsen's rich, vibrant world of sound. The final piece, "Springtime on Funen," is not my cup of tea, but the performance is solid nonetheless. The Salonen/Nielsen combination proves to be memorable once again.

    5 out of 5 stars A Biblical Tragedy.......2006-03-15

In this first of Nielsen's two operas a darker tone prevails than in most of his other music. But, as always, the score brings the listener around an amazingly rich and varied musical landscape, from the idyllic to the tragical. Christoff's curious English happily adds to the archaic setting.

4 out of 5 stars Nielsen's Saul & David is an underrated gem.......2003-07-03

I admit to a strong bias in favor of this opera, as I sang the very small role of the Captain of Saul's bodyguard in the U.K. premiere of the opera, done by the University of London in 1977--the first time the opera had been performed outside of Scandinavia, I believe.
This recording is excellent, with Christov in fine voice--even if he does sound a little like Bela Lugosi on the operatic stage. And Elizabeth Soderstrom is positively lyrical.
The music is very easy to listen to, with wonderful lengthy orchestral passages and lush harmonies. Note the walking bass line under Samuel's final aria, when he's called back from the dead by the Witch of Endor. The ballet celebrating David's victory over Goliath has tremendously expansive use of brass.
This opera also makes great use of the chorus, almost as another character in the piece. Although the opera is fairly standard repertoire in Denmark, I've never understood why this opera isn't performed more often in the international arena.

4 out of 5 stars Fine Example of Nielsen at his best.......2000-05-24

I don't listen to much opera, rather, I approached this recording as a Nielsen completist looking to round out my collection. This fine opera (four acts on 2 CDs) is a good example of Nielsen in the amiable style of his middle years (circa Symphonies 2 and 3). Nice clean melodic lines. Curiously, this performance is in English. Though I still can't understand too much of the text, It has the sound of a biblical oratorio.

I am very glad somebody took this little gem out of the vaults. For 10 bucks it is a nice neat little package, though there is no libbretto. Sonics are good for the early 70's but not outstanding.

Also of note, this is one of Jascha Horenstein's last recordings.

The music of Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) did not receive wide currency outside his native Denmark until after World War II. At the time, Jean Sibelius was the most famous and oft-performed Scandinavian composer, particularly in Britain. However, the appearance of Nielsen's Third Symphony on 13 78-rpm vinyl discs in England in 1949 changed all that, propelling Nielsen to the status of a world-class composer. Dutton Laboratories has given us here the original '40s recordings of the Third and Fifth Symphonies performed by the Danish State Radio Symphony, brilliantly remastered for the digital age. The overall sound has a muted quality, but nothing detracts from these poignant performances. This is the way Nielsen was meant to be played. Highly recommended for absolutely everybody. --Paul Cook

          5 out of 5 stars An Un-Matched 3rd And A Great 5th.......2004-07-18

I can't say enough good things about Dutton's transfers here. My first encounter with the "Espansiva" was the fine Bernstein account on Columbia LP, which was a trifle mannered and a bit ponderous in the last movement, but nonetheless one of that conductor's very finest efforts. Around 1972 I found a battered old London LP of this Tuxen 3rd (recorded 1946) in a Boston flea market. Underneath all the grungy noise and crackle I could detect a noble and powerful performance. In this magical Dutton transfer, Tuxen's unmatched mastery now bursts forth in all its glory - it sounds like excellent mid-1950's mono. No matter what other versions you may have, this exultant Tuxen reading deserves a place in your collection - it is simply superb!

The 5th symphony under Tuxen exists in two different versions, both with the Danish State Radio Symphony: this studio account (1950) and a "live" 1955 concert reading from Paris. The latter can be heard on "Carl Nielsen Collection: Volume I" (Danacord 351-353, an absolutely indispensible 3-disc set of all six symphonies in historic performances by Danish conductors). Both are magnificent readings, but the sound of the "live" Paris account suffers from a noisy audience, rather diffuse sound, and a deficiency of bass response. However, neither of these quite matches my benchmark performance: Thomas Jensen's thrilling studio 5th from 1954, now available in a top-notch transfer on Dutton 2502 (coupled with Jensen's commanding Symphony #1 and an excellent "Helios" Overture with Tuxen). Nothing recorded since comes anywhere near Jensen's impassioned 5th.

Dutton is to be congratulated here for providing us with one of the finest-ever CD transfers of priceless historic performances. Anyone who loves Nielsen's music should pounce on this issue before it disappears.
