Editorial Reviews "Jazz Suite for Banjo and Piano" was written and produced in 1998, with Brad Smith on 4-string plectrum banjo and synthesized piano (Ensoniq KT-88). All the material for the piece is derived from a 12-tone row stated at the very beginning by the piano left hand. The seven movements traverse a unified spectrum of styles, from jazz and blues, to a tango and humoristic waltz. "Concerto for Banjo and Strings" was written for 4-string plectrum banjo and an 11-piece string orchestra in 1976, and premiered in 1977 by The Northwest Chamber Orchestra with Louis Richmond conducting. The piece presents the banjo in a contemporary classical idiom and was enthusiastically received by the audience with multiple curtain calls.
