Editorial Reviews
Kalvos & Damian New Music Bazaar, February 20, 2001
"What a doggone flat out cool piece."

The Resonator, June, 2001
"Wonderful music so well performed by one of the best banjoists anywhere who just happens to be a fine, fine composer."

Album Description
"Nouveau Banjo" is banjo like you've never heard before. It is also music like you've never heard before. Within the joyful exuberance that is intrinsic to Brad Smith's virtuoso playing, the music explores a wide world of expressive dynamics with an underlying humor, providing fun-filled synapsing of unchartered neurons.

"Jazz Suite for Banjo and Piano" was written and produced in 1998, with Brad Smith on 4-string plectrum banjo and synthesized piano (Ensoniq KT-88). All the material for the piece is derived from a 12-tone row stated at the very beginning by the piano left hand. The seven movements traverse a unified spectrum of styles, from jazz and blues, to a tango and humoristic waltz.

"Concerto for Banjo and Strings" was written for 4-string plectrum banjo and an 11-piece string orchestra in 1976, and premiered in 1977 by The Northwest Chamber Orchestra with Louis Richmond conducting. The piece presents the banjo in a contemporary classical idiom and was enthusiastically received by the audience with multiple curtain calls.

Tremendously imaginative and innovative music! By composing classical music for the banjo, Bradley Smith has added an exciting, new dimension to the contemporary music repertoire and, at the same time, has elevated the status of this beautiful instrument.
