The arrangements of Piazzolla's compositions are challenging and intricate and the performance level is exceptionally high...

Bobenrieth has hand-picked and rehearsed his own ensemble and his efforts have yielded a challenging, impressively accomplished recording.

Album Description
Chilean born master accordionist Manny Bobenrieth explores the music of Astor Piazolla, A.C. Jobim and Cole Porter in this exciting recording of the Manny Bobenrieth Ensemble. In the late '80s, the accordionist's father took him to hear Argentinean Astor Piazzolla's Quinteto Nuevo Tango perform at the National Press Club. "I remember being completely dazzled by the group's ensemble playing," he recalls, "stunned by the complexity of the music, and perhaps even a little scared." Piazzolla's compositions, which revolutionized traditional tango forms by incorporating dissonance, jazz harmony, counterpoint, and fugue. Bobenrieth has hand-picked and rehearsed his own ensemble — accordion, violin, guitar, vibes, piano, and bass — to interpret the works of this modern master. "I had no idea how ambitious my dream was," Bobenrieth admits. This is the debut recording of the Ensemble.

5 out of 5 stars Piazzolla Shines Sur La Main Parisienne.......2007-02-18

Classical music often leaves me drowsy or distracted, but this is something different. Like tango partners, Paris and Argentina have long been sinuously intertwined, the Spanish artist being drawn into the arms of the French city, which seduces and renews him: one example being Julio Cortazar's book "Hopscotch," another being this CD. In this rich tradition, the young, ambitious, but little-known Quatuor Caliente, a quartet of five Parisians (a quartet of a bandeonist, pianist, violinist, and double-bassist augmented by a guest vibraphonist) has taken Piazzolla's masterpiece and spun it rapidly around, showing off its sparkling classical and jazz-infused ornament and leaving the listener ravished and fulfilled. The Quartet's playing is impeccable, sumptous, yet alert to Piazolla's subversive cleverness, and like after any good tango, both partners, the great Piazzolla and the radiant Quatour, are left much the better.

5 out of 5 stars Piazzolla Must-Have, Part Two.......2003-12-14

In an earlier review, I gave ANS' Piazzolla Masterpieces "Otono Porteno" my highest recommendation. Well, unfortunately that CD went out of print and became essentially unavailable.
Recently, it has become possible for the fan who missed out on both the original recordings in 1969 and the 1994 ANS compilation to take advantage of a second chance to acquire some of the most arresting pieces in the Piazzolla canon.
These can be found on the recently remastered original called Pulsacion and on Circular Moves' twin reissue Adios Nonino (reviewed separately).
Pulsacion features a four part jazz soundtrack of four "pulsations" for a Uruguayan movie of the same name followed by five instrumental pieces from the now-classic operita Maria de Buenos Aires.
The Pulsacion set is sort of a musical orphan that has been tacked on to other compilation CDs over the years, but here it is in the logical sequence of its original issue. Those who have never heard it will find it surprisingly different from much of Piazzolla's other works. Different though it is, Pulsacion still screams Piazzolla.
The instrumental pieces from Maria de Buenos Aires, released previously on the ANS Masterpieces compilation, include the musically difficult Fuga y Misterio, the brooding melancholy of Contramilonga A La Funerala, the Zappa-esque stunner Allegro Tangabile, the dissonant variation on many previous Piazzolla themes Tocata Rea, and the percussive xylophone-driven staccato of Tangata del Alba.
I own more than 50 Piazzolla recordings. It is not hyperbole to say that this re-master and it's twin are among the must-haves for any fan. In addition to the great music, both contain booklets with excellent explanatory notes absent from the ANS compilation. Order them now before they, too, disappear from the shelves.

This was the first album of Argentine Tango I purchased after I started learning the dance. But apart from its sentimental value, this is an album I truly enjoy.
Unlike a lot of recordings of more modern tango orchestras this CD contains a good number of tunes that are actually danceable and have a strong rhythm. Thankfully the music lacks the "pseudo"-drama and "pseudo"-sensuality that a lot of modern orchestras embrace and quite a few people like, but which I just find dry and tiresome.
Among my favorite pieces on this CD are "Bahía Blanca" (Original Artist: Carlos Di Sarli) and a beautiful arrangement of the vals "Romance de Barrio", made popular by Aníbal Troilo's orchestra.

In 1978, the late Astor Piazzolla tapped Pablo Ziegler to join his New Tango Quintet. In those days, Ziegler was not a tanguero (as tango fans and players are called) but rather a classically trained pianist, composer, and arranger--and a jazz player to boot. By the time the quintet dissolved, a decade later, it had grown to be an exceptional ensemble, a sort of streetwise chamber group, and Ziegler had helped stretch the vocabulary of tango with his jazz style improvisations. It also made Ziegler a leading figure in new tango. Tango Romance, Ziegler's collaboration with New York-based Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, includes arrangements of five Piazzolla pieces, four Ziegler originals, and two classic tangos. The arrangements (mostly by Ziegler) are elegant, lush, and for the most part, effective. But filling out the details in the music becomes at times problematic. Ziegler has always been a romantic--part of what made him essential in balancing Piazzolla's tartness. Now unchecked, he favors rich, sweet textures and borders on sentimentality almost to a point of diminishing returns. At his best, he knows how to dress new tango in tails while holding on to its street smarts. It's a delicate balance that only someone who has lived this music as Ziegler has can begin to attempt. --Fernando Gonzalez

I'm a sucker for checking out any CD containing some of the works of Astor Piazzolla, and since I am familiar with Pablo Ziegler, I figured this album is a sure bet. Well, it is just that. Despite some weakness on the part of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in its performance of the Piazzolla classics Soledad and Tangata, they do a yeoman's job on the rest of it. Soledad is probably the most somber and majestic song in the Piazzolla catalog and Ziegler is a master interpreter of it but somehow the Orchestra couldn't grasp its proper expression. They fare somewhat better with a moving interpretation of Oblivion. Their best work on the album is done with the Cobian/Cadicamo classic Nostalgias and with the Ziegler composition Milonga en el Viento. Those alone make this album worth owning. On balance, Tango Romance is a fine album that offers the tanguero music to dream by.

        5 out of 5 stars Guitar Aficionado.......2001-12-11

I have had to rely on a good friend in Paris to keep me abreast of the South American developments in classical guitar. Apparently, the French school is less inclined towards the "classics" of Tarrega, Sor, and Giuliani. So I have, in recent years, developed a certain anticipation as my birthday approaches to see what he'll send me next. A couple of years ago, it was this CD. I had never heard of Siewers, Pujol, or the Stamic Quartet. As soon as I finished my first go round with this CD, I called the local classical guitar studio to grab up the sheet music of the three solo works featured. Alas, they had never heard of this Pujol either - but were able to order it for me. This music is vibrant, playful, unpredictable, driving, and wistful. Pujol's themes can range from downright jarring to soaringly uplifiting. His demands of the instrument are great, and Siewers is up to the task. This CD has brought me literally hours of enjoyment. Is it the best "technical" CD I've ever owned? Probabaly not. But it has brought me as much enjoyment as the recording of Solti and the CSO performing Mahler's Second. And thats saying something!
